Copenhagen, Denmark

Denmark lost last night, but seems to be taking it well. We did the hop-a-bus thing today, and then finished our walking route.

Copenhagen is a city of interesting contrasts. On the one hand, it is fairly clean and the people are very friendly. It is certainly blessed with an abundance of beautiful, six-foot-tall, apparently very fit, blue-eyed blonde ladies. The architecture is interesting and the many canals are very picturesque. But then again, a huge number of people you see on the street seem to spend all of their spare time, of which they must have a lot, sitting around drinking beer. The chief forms of exercise must be bicycling and carrying extra beer. The city is fairly free of litter and we've encountered no beggars, but beer cans and bottles are all over the place.

Public urination also seems to be a part of living here. Admittedly, Europe in general is a hard place to find facilities, and there IS all of that beer consumption, but it's mighty strange for an old country boy to see people just "whipping out" and urinating against the side of a building along the sidewalk. The girls seem to at least seek out an alley of sorts, but the guys must be recently descended from dogs. But the most bizarre thing we've seen is the custom of kids on high-school graduation day riding all over town in the back of assorted types of decorated trucks, apparently quite drunk, blowing horns, waving beer cans, and screaming at everybody they pass at the tops of their lungs. They do this for hours, not just while in route to somewhere. The local drinking age must be about 15, judging from the people we've seen drinking in the parks, on the subway, etc.
