9 July
Frau Krause dropped us off at the bus stop on her way to work. We rode to the Augsburg train station and stored our packs so we could explore the town unencumbered. We saw the Golden Hall at City Hall, and climbed the 260 steps to the top of a church steeple.
Acting on a tip from Jutta and Elisabeth, we toured The Fuggerei, a "social settlement" founded in 1521 by Jacob Fugger the Rich for the needy citizens of Augsburg. It's sort of privately subsidized housing for the indigent. It's still operational, with 150 people living there and paying 0.88 Euros per year rent. (Note: there are no typos in the preceding sentence.) Rent does not include utilities. One must pass inspection by a committee overseen by three direct descendants of Jacob and agree to pray for Jake and his kin three times per day. Only Catholics need apply. One presumes there is a long waiting list. The apartments are small, but I've lived in much worse and certainly stayed in worse on this trip.
The rest of our time in Augsburg was spent doing our usual aimless wandering. We moved back to Daniel's in Dusslingen via four different trains.
