Dover Castle

Although we were on the 4th floor, the caterwauling from Karaoke night in the pub below us kept us awake till quite late last night. That, combined with the general shoddiness of the place, inspired me to get out this morning and look for something better. I had to arrange for two different B&Bs for the next two nights. We're paying more, but not regretting it.

After moving, we spent the rest of the day at Dover Castle. Parts of the complex dates back to Roman times, but the bulk of it was built by Henry II. This now ranks as our favorite castle. The folks that run the place have done a great job, with several rooms decorated as they would have been back in the day, and many costumed characters. There are also extensive tunnel systems under the castle. Many of them date from the Napoleonic wars, but some were built in the 20th century. All were used as hospitals and command centers during WW2. The Dunkirk evacuation was coordinated from here, as well as D-Day naval operations, to mention a couple. The tour was very informative and interesting.
