[Voice-over by Duncan MacLeod]
I was born four hundred years ago in the Highlands of Scotland. I am Immortal, and I am not alone. Now is the time of the Gathering, when the stroke of a sword will release the power of the Quickening. In the end, there can be only one.

OPENING CREDITS

TEASER

Establishing shot: Arc de Triomphe 1

Deserted Paris alley, night 2

[Man runs down alley -- apparently running from something or someone.]

Outside St. Joseph's chapel, night 3

[The man (Jean Pierre) approaches the gates of old chapel.]

[Inside chapel, Darius hears someone calling his name.]

JP - [offscreen] Darius!

Darius - [runs out of chapel] No! Go back! Go back!

[A dagger flies through the air & hits the man in the back.]

JP - [as he falls to the ground] Darius... Aah...

Darius - Dear God, no. Jean Pierre! [senses 'buzz' of approaching Immortal]

Grayson - [appears out of the shadows] It's always awkward when the pupil goes back to visit his old teacher. CUT

Darius - He was a mortal, Grayson. You didn't have to kill him.

Grayson - CUT You planted him in my organization to spy on me. He won't be the last, Old One. I shall hunt down your... protégés, one by one. Until you sicken of it and come out of sanctuary to fight me.

Darius - Will it please you that much to destroy me?

Grayson - Immensely. You could have been one of the greatest rulers in the history of the world. Instead you cower on holy ground.

Darius - That was fourteen hundred years ago. But for you, the world hasn't changed.

Grayson - Look outside your cloister. What has changed? The means of destruction only. You're a fool.

Darius - Who's next?

Grayson - I'm afraid you'll have to guess. Shouldn't be too hard for a man of your insight into a person's soul.

Darius - It's Paulus, isn't it? [as Grayson begins to walk away] Grayson! [Grayson keeps walking.] You believed in me, once!

Grayson - I didn't change. You did.

Tessa - Well, I'm really flattered. I'll give you my answer... as soon as I can. Yes, thank you. Good bye.

DM - [carrying a very large vase with RR] Put it over here. [to Tessa] What was that? Another commission?

Tessa - Nope. That was the Bureau of Arts and Monuments in Paris. I've been selected to curate "an historical retrospective on sculpture and form."

RR - So that means you would, like, sit in a museum all day and 'curate'?

Tessa - Actually, no. It's a traveling exhibition. It'll be on tour.

DM - So you'd have to travel with it?

Tessa - No, I wouldn't. But the post is in Paris. That's where the collection will be gathered.

RR - It's a hell of a commute.

DM - It's not a fly-over kind of job... is it?

RR - [looks between DM & Tessa. Tessa looks at DM.] Hold it, hold it. Time out one second here, guys. You're not thinking of closing up the shop here, jamming to old gay Paree, are you? I mean, you guys have got a big investment here... you know, I mean I'm talking about in terms of time and... and effort... in building up a clientele and a reputation. I mean, you guys gotta think of these things, you know. I mean, they take years. It just doesn't happen overnight. [As DM continues to look at them silently, 1 someone knocks on the door.] I'll get it.

Tessa - [to DM] I'm not asking you to do that.

DM - I know.

RR - [returns with JiffyExpress envelope (CUT)] It's for you, Mac. It's from... Paris. [turns to look at Tessa]

DM - [takes bubble-wrapped contents from RR] You opened it.

RR - I'm just doing my job.

DM - [opens small leather satchel & dumps out a dozen small flat stones (pieces of bone?) with markings on them] Runes. Ancient runes.

RR - Looks like something out of a pet cemetery.

DM - It's from Darius.

Tessa - Darius? The priest?

RR - And I take it that... all this makes a whole lot of sense to you, right?

DM - It's written in a language that died almost two thousand years ago. Darius taught it to me. He's almost that old.

Tessa - [as DM arranges runes on the table] What does it say?

DM - Someone's paying me a visit.

Tessa - An Immortal?

DM - Grayson.

RR - All right, I'll play. Who's Grayson?

<DM - CUT He was one of Darius' protégés.>

RR - But he's, like, one of the good guys, right? [as DM picks up his katana] Right?

Establishing shot: snowy mountains 5

Duncan's island - dusk, cold and snowy 6

RR - [jogging with DM along path by cabin] So this Grayson guy's got you pretty spooked, huh, Mac? [DM does not respond.] Hey, that's all right. You don't gotta tell me.

DM - Richie, this isn't about fear. It's about strategy.

RR - Strategy.

DM - Yep. [does some leg stretches] All right, you ready to start training?

RR - START training?

[DM & RR are in front of log cabin. DM has a large log mounted horizontally, near ground level, so that it spins around in a circle when the ends are pushed. RR is spinning the log so DM can jump over the ends as they approach him.]

RR - So what makes this Grayson guy so different from the others?

DM - He's fourteen hundred years older than I am -- he's one of the few ancient Immortals left. He's been a warlord most of that time. You don't just go up to him with your sword and say "Ts-ts-ts, en garde, fool!" [RR stops the log suddenly & spins it in the opposite direction, tripping DM.] Ow! [RR laughs. DM smiles at him.]

[later, full dark]

RR - [crouched by small fire in front of cabin] So, Mac, what's this connection between Grayson and Darius?

DM - Darius was once one of the great generals. Grayson was his second in command. Fifteen hundred years ago, Darius could have led his armies across Europe and ruled for a thousand years. But he turned his armies back. Grayson felt betrayed and never forgave him. And Darius, ever since, has tried from holy ground to be a peace maker.

RR - Why would he do that?

DM - It's only legend.

RR - Yeah, well, come on, Mac. With you guys, what else is there?

DM - The legend has it that Darius killed a holy man at the gates of Paris -- the oldest living Immortal at the time. Then suddenly he changed. He turned his back on war.

RR - You think that this holy guy's Quickening went to Darius and made him good? Well, does that mean that, like, if a really good Immortal, like, chopped the head off a really bad ancient Immortal that he could... you know?

Inside antique store, night 0

Tessa - [to male customer] Thank you.

Customer - Good bye.

Tessa - [as customer leaves, turns to man crouched down looking at item in display case] Can I help you?

Grayson - Admiring, only. I have two others just like it.

Tessa - Really? They were stolen from the Reims {Rennes?} cathedral during the French Revolution. How did you get them?

Grayson - I'm afraid I'm quite a collector of ecclesiastical art. From that period and... others. Souvenirs of my travels.

Tessa - [realizing who he must be] And you collect them because they remind you of Darius? And how much you hate him?

Grayson - Very good. I see MacLeod has kept you abreast of many things. I wonder if that's wise.

Tessa - It won't work. You can't blackmail Duncan.

Grayson - I rather think I can. And now, after seeing you in the flesh, I'm more convinced than ever. You are a remarkable woman, well worth keeping alive.

Tessa - If you think he will stand by and let Victor Paulus be killed, you have misjudged him terribly. So you'd better kill me now and be done with it.

Grayson - Truly remarkable.

Tessa - Then you'll have to face him. But you know that, don't you? That's why you want to bargain with him using me. You're afraid of Duncan MacLeod.

Grayson - You've quite convinced me, Miss Noel. I won't bargain with him. Tell him I'll be in touch.

Tessa - He'll never know you were here.

Duncan's island, same night 6

RR - What'd'ya say, Mac, about time we go inside now?

DM - [smiles] You can go in if you want.

RR - [as cougar yowls in the distance] What was that?

DM - Cougar. [Cougar cries again.] Oh, don't worry, they're not on this island.

RR - Please tell me that they don't swim.

DM - Actually, they're pretty good swimmers.

RR - Oh, actually, that's great. [DM laughs.] Oh boy. 2 [takes out the runes] So, Mac, what do these things say exactly? I mean, it's got to be more than just: "Grayson arrives on the noon stage. Sharpen sword. Darius." [holds one up] Here, check that one out.

DM - "Victor Paulus." Darius was his mentor as well.

RR - Victor Paulus? I've heard of that dude. He's like that guy that, uh, gives all those speeches, leads rallies and stuff, right? Ha ha. He's one of you guys?

DM - No, he's one of YOU guys. He doesn't know anything about me or about Immortals. Darius thinks he's in danger.

RR - Why doesn't he warn him?

DM - He has. But that's not gonna stop Victor Paulus. He's a man with a mission.

RR - Yes, but so is Grayson. So which one of you is he going to go after first?

DM - I wish I knew. [as RR stares at him] What?

RR - Mac, were, uh... were you, uh... did Darius ever change you?

DM - Yeah, I guess he did. I was born of a warrior people. When war came, I chose sides like most men. I fought... I killed.

Flashback - Waterloo, 1815 8

Soldier - [helping wounded companion] Hang on. Hang on.

DM - [carrying wounded comrade on his back, senses 'buzz' coming from hooded monk wandering among the dead & dying, and reaches for his sword] I am Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod.

Darius - I am Darius. You won't need that. Put him down here. Slowly. [examines wounded man] Those whom we cannot heal, we bury to prevent disease. Infection kills more than all the English and French cannons.

DM - The surgeon said he would die of infection. To bring him straight here.

Darius - Perhaps I can save him.

DM - From the fevers? How?

Darius - Give me that tin cup. And fill it with snow.

Soldier - [passing by with wounded man] {We're almost there.}

DM - [returns with cup full of snow] Here.

Darius - Hold this. There are medicines which have been lost to modern doctors. [adds powder to cup that DM is holding, then takes cup & has wounded man drink] Good. Now we wait. It will take hours.

DM - Hours?

Darius - Yes.

DM - Well, how goes the battle?

Darius - Why does that matter to you? Napoleon may lose a campaign. Wellington may win a great victory. What have they really won or lost? Their reputation? These men have been robbed of their most precious possession... forever. [DM looks at dead bodies surrounding them.] You shouldn't be taking part in this tragedy.

DM - I was raised a warrior. I choose battles I believe to be just.

Darius - Oh, I'm sure. You're quite loyal to your convictions and compatriots. But I wonder what these men think about that... about convictions and compatriotism now?

Loft apartment - bedroom 0

Tessa - [asleep in bed, awakes to find DM at foot of bed watching her. She throws back the covers.] Come to bed. [They kiss...]

Antique store - workshop, night 0

DM - [voice-over as he practices with his katana] Hope doesn't conquer a superior adversary. So why do I hope to beat Grayson? Why do I think that a good life will protect me from an evil one? [finishes kata & holds sword point down in front of him] What power can I draw from this thing... this hope?

Tessa - [comes up behind him] You still have energy for this?

DM - I couldn't sleep. [kneels & begins another kata] I didn't want to wake you.

Tessa - The empty bed woke me.

[DM suddenly senses 'buzz', stands up, & moves to the door.]

Tessa - [whispering] What is it?

DM - [picks up small headless model soldier from doorstep] Message from Grayson.

Tessa - Why didn't he--?

DM - He will. When it suits him.

ACT TWO

Heli pad, day 9

Newswoman - We're live here at the waterfront. We're still waiting...

Randi - [into microphone] The helicopter bearing Victor Paulus will be landing momentarily. We do hope to get an interview with this dogged crusader, whom some consider the future candidate for the Nobel Peace prize. CUT

[DM sneaks through door marked EMPLOYEES ONLY as helicopter lands. As Paulus climbs out, he pushes his way through the media dressed as helicopter crew member.]

Reporter - He will be here for a few days before moving on his way to the northeast.

Reporter - He has just landed here...

[DM scans for trouble as limousine pulls up, then runs at limo driver as the man gets out holding a gun.]

Randi - [pointing] Hey! Seems to be some kind of trouble going on...

[The gun fires as DM grabs at it. Someone screams. DM punches the would-be assassin & security men help Victor Paulus into the limo.]

Randi - [for the camera] Someone has just tried to shoot Victor Paulus. I'm not sure if he was hit in this attempt, but... [DM climbs into driver's seat of limo.] We're unaware of his condition at this time. Here they -- here they come-- [Limo rolls past reporters & Randi breaks off as she realizes who is driving. DM hides behind his raised hand & drives away quickly, while Randi stares after the car in astonishment.]

Heli pad, night 9

[DM walks to T-bird & gets in. As he closes the door, Randi pops up from where she has been hiding in the passenger seat.]

Randi - Hi.

DM - Need a ride?

Randi - Wherever you're going.

DM - Excuse me?

Randi - I mean, all I have to do is stick with you. You'll lead me to a breaking news story.

DM - I'm just lucky that way. [gets out of car]

Randi - Come on, MacLeod. If the FBI and the CIA were half as good as the outfit you work for, I'd sleep better at night. Or maybe I'd stay awake and worry.

DM - [goes around to passenger door & opens it] You're the one who thinks I belong to a secret organization. Out.

Randi - [gets out of car] That is not a denial. You talk like the White House press secretary. I mean, who are you guys? Just a hint. What, Anti-Terrorist squad... Federal Crime task force... Eagle Scouts? Come on, give.

DM - Uh, just a group of history buffs. [gets back into T-bird]

Randi - Yeah, and bird watchers. [gets back in, too. DM bangs his head against steering wheel.] Just some background. I won't blow your cover.

DM - Even if I did, no one would believe you. Sorry, can't help.

Randi - All right then, who wants Paulus dead? I mean, the guy feeds starving refugee kids. He keeps men with overactive hormones from blowing civilians to bits with mortars.

DM - Answer that one yourself and you have yourself a story.

Randi - [scoffs] Arms dealers? [off DM's look] You're serious.

DM - I have to go.

Randi - Yeah, I know. You have a report to make. [gets out of car]

DM - I sincerely hope I see you again.

Randi - Yeah, right. [as DM drives off] Hey... Hey, wait a minute! Like you might not?

Tessa's workshop, day 0

DM - You know, I've been thinking. You should go to Paris... show the Arts and Monuments people you're anxious for the job.

Tessa - Who says I am?

DM - I do.

Tessa - But that's not why you want me to leave.

DM - Your staying here won't change things.

Tessa - Then I'll stay. This Grayson won't hurt me, will he? Or you would have said something by now.

DM - No, he probably won't. It's not his style. But I don't want to risk it. Darius will know where to hide you if anything goes wrong.

Tessa - You're going to face him, aren't you? Even though he's a thousand years older and more powerful than you. If he kills you, what will that prove? Will Victor Paulus be safe then? Will I?

Paulus - [voice-over] Someone once said-- 3

Military Cemetery 10

Paulus - [speaking to small group of reporters, while DM stands at a distance, listening] --that peace in international affairs is nothing more than a period of cheating 4 Someone once said that peace in international affairs is nothing more than a period of cheating 5 between two periods of fighting. For some nations, peace is simply a time to rebuild armies, stockpile weapons, and plan strategies. For others, sadly, it's a time to do nothing. As we stand here, safe, comfortable, engaging in rational discourse... somewhere, men, women, and children are dying. We cannot be truly at peace when somewhere else there is war, or hunger, or violence. In the face of violence, we must insist on NONviolence...
(The panning shot at the beginning of this scene is slightly shorter (by 2 seconds) in the DVD version, and the beginning of Paulus' speech overlaps the end of the previous scene and the scene transition.)

Flashback - St. Joseph's Chapel, 1816 3

Darius - Weapons have no dominion over the souls of men, so put your weapons down. [to leader of brigands] Put your weapons down. Take what is here and leave.

Chief Brigand - [throws candlesticks & cup to the ground] These are worthless pewter! Where is your gold?

Darius - Gold? I have none. Anyone in the quarter would have told you that.

[Brigand leader motions with his head to his two cohorts, who leave the chapel. The leader turns as if to follow, then whirls & stabs Darius with his sword. As Darius crumples to the floor, the leader exits the chapel. His cohorts are standing outside the doors, looking at cloaked & hooded figure standing outside the gate.]

Chief Brigand - Another priest. We are blessed.

DM - [his face & clothing hidden by the cloak] Where is Darius?

Chief Brigand - The priests in this quarter are a surly lot, aren't they, boys?

DM - [removes cloak, revealing himself] You made a mistake. I'm no priest.

Chief Brigand - [to his men] Attack!

[One of the men fires his musket, but DM knocks gun aside with his katana, then kills him & knocks other man down. Chief brigand engages DM in brief swordfight & also ends up dead.]

Darius - [running out of chapel as last remaining brigand climbs back to his feet] Don't kill him! Let him go! [DM moves to cut man off from escape.] Leave him! [DM stands aside & man scoots past him out the gate & away.]

DM - He'll only kill innocent people who can't rise from the dead.

Darius - [looking at the two dead men] Why have you done this?

DM - What else was I supposed to do, Darius? Tell me that. [quieter] I can't be like you. Maybe I'm not old enough or wise enough. I just can't stand by and let...!

Darius - You're leaving me?

DM - Yes, I'm going to America. The hatreds just run too deep here. Maybe it'll be different in the New World.

Darius - I would not rob you of that hope.

DM - Good-bye, Darius.

Darius - Good-bye, Duncan MacLeod. [They clasp hands & DM walks away.] Peace be with you.

Military Cemetery 10

(resume previous scene)

Paulus - [continuing his speech] Terrible diseases have been conquered because dedicated men went from failure to failure until they succeeded. We can... we MUST do no less! For our children. [as thunder peals] Thank you for coming out in this weather.

[DM takes a step toward the crowd but is halted by Immortal 'buzz' as Grayson appears behind him.]

Grayson - Inspiring, wasn't it? Oh, but I forgot... you turned away from Darius' teachings a long time ago.

DM - That didn't make me his enemy. Just not a disciple. 6

Grayson - I've wanted to meet you for so long. But you know how busy one gets. Holy ground is useful for business discussions. Someone spoiled a very carefully laid little plan, yesterday. It was you, wasn't it?

DM - You know, this fellow Scot said something about the plans of mice and men. What do you want, Grayson?

Grayson - An understanding. An understanding that for every action there is an equal and adverse reaction. Should you insist on protecting Darius' star pupil, I might, for example, cease to offer my protection to those around you.

DM - I protect those around me.

Grayson - I'm prepared to offer you a deal, Duncan MacLeod... one that I rarely make.

DM - Why?

Grayson - Let's just say I'm a risk manager. Keeping you neutral is simply good business. All you have to do is nothing. Just that... nothing. And I will spare both you and your lady... for the rest of her natural life. [off DM's look] Oh... I see it's true what they say about you. You have become emotionally entangled with these mortals. Tsk, tsk, tsk, tsk.

DM - Go to hell.

Grayson - [laughs] They also say you're a man of action rather than words. Those were ill chosen and I'll ignore them. But if you interfere with my plans again, neither you nor those you love will ever be safe.

DM - [as Grayson gets in his car] No one's ever safe, Grayson. Not even you.

Randi - [comes up behind DM] Safe from what?

DM - [as car drives away] It's just an observation on the human condition.

Randi - Grayson? I don't know the name.

DM - He's not exactly a public figure.

Randi - But if he were an arms merchant, he wouldn't need to be. The counselor behind the curtain. The Invisible Man. I like that. How do you know him? While we're on the subject, how do you know Victor Paulus?

DM - We have a friend in common.

ACT THREE

Establishing shot: outside antique store 11

Loft apartment - living room 0

Tessa - [pointing to bag by the door] This is the last one.

RR - I'll take it out for you. [tries to lift bag] Whoa! This feels like a permanent move.

Tessa - It might be. I don't know.

RR - Yeah... well, hey, you know, that's cool. You know, no... roots, no... bonds. No... liabilities.

Tessa - Richie... 7

RR - Let me just ask you one question, Tess. Why are you going to Paris now?

Tessa - I will only distract Duncan. He'll think more clearly if I'm not around.

RR - Yeah, well, he should be more worried about you being alone in Paris with all those French dudes.

DM - [enters room] That's why you're going with her. To protect her from all those 'French dudes'. [hands RR a plane ticket]

RR - This for me? It's a ticket to Paris.

DM - Mm-hm.

RR - [laughs] Oh man, ha! What can I say? [suddenly worried] How am I gonna communicate?

DM - Sign language.

RR - Uh... bonjour? [DM chuckles.] Uh, ça va? Merci? Uh... Passez-moi le beurre!

Translations: Bonjour - Hello; Ça va - It goes (slang: How are you?);
Merci - Thank you; Passez-moi le beurre! - Pass me the butter!

Tessa - We'll work on it.

RR - Aw, Mac, thank you. [looks at Tessa]

DM - Go on, pack.

RR - Right, right. I gotta pack. [heads toward his room, then turns back] Um, I'm not gonna have to, like, eat, uh, frogs... or snails... or anything like that, right? I mean... [as DM tries not to laugh] No, I'm serious! I mean, at least not right away, right?

DM - [grinning] Pack.

RR - Right. Right.

DM - [to Tessa as RR leaves] I thought he should go with you.

Tessa - [busy with her carry-on] Yeah.

DM - I'll take you to the airport.

Tessa - If you think I'm going to let you say goodbye to me at the airport, Duncan MacLeod, think again. I'll call a cab. [DM approaches & hugs her.] When are you facing Grayson?

DM - Soon.

Tessa - Remember, Paris is our city. I'll be waiting for you.

Establishing shot: Skyline from park, night 12

Park, night 12

Grayson - [lighting a cigarette as DM approaches] I know, these things will kill me.

DM - I'm ready.

Grayson - What's the rush? Do you really think there's something waiting for us after this? Darius does. But you're smarter than he is.

DM - What do you know about me?

Grayson - Oh, I'm quite a student of your exploits... almost a fan. You have immense potential. You may not realize this, but there are few like you left. I've killed so many. Shame to waste you, just yet. Why don't you come and work for me, MacLeod? Oh, not long, only a century or so. We could do so much.

DM - With the Gathering near at hand, what makes you think any of us have a century left?

Grayson - Ah. Well, then I promise you this... you and I will be the last two Immortals left on Earth. We can fight it out then, for the ultimate prize.

DM - And Victor Paulus will die.

Grayson - You don't even know him! Think of what's at stake! Can one stranger be worth such a loss?

DM - You're only doing this to hurt Darius.

Grayson - Not hurt him... DESTROY him.

DM - Then why bargain with me?

Grayson - Maybe I like you. Come on, what do you say, Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod? [with mock Scottish accent] Have ye no taste for greatness?

DM - [draws sword] There can be only one.

Grayson - [sighs] You're a foolish lad. [attacks, but sword fight is interrupted by car headlights & honking horn]

Teen 1 - Hey, go back! What's that?

Teen 2 - What's going on over there?

Grayson - [to DM] You're lucky, as well. You've been reprieved.

DM - Grayson... soon.

Establishing shot: hotel 13

Hotel corridor 13

Randi - [for the camera] We're here at the Sterling Hotel, where Victor Paulus is giving his final conference. He's invited a small group of businessmen and politicians where he will be twisting arms and winning over a few stony hearts. [turns to interview an arriving dignitary] Excuse me, sir...

Hotel conference room 13

Hoestler - [approaches Grayson] We've paid one of the security men. He'll lead Paulus right to our people. [Grayson nods silently & hoestler leaves the room.]

Hotel corridor 13

[DM sees hoestler leave & moves to follow him but is blocked by Randi.]

Randi - You're here because of this Grayson, aren't you?

DM - [walking away] If you really care, go back inside.

Randi - [follows] Jaded journalist types don't fall for lines like that.

DM - Jaded journalist types don't care. I think you do. [gets into elevator with hoestler]

Randi - [as elevator doors close] Don't let first impressions fool you. [to herself] Good luck, MacLeod.

Hotel basement 13

[Elevator doors open & hoestler falls to the ground as DM steps over him.]

Guard - [at end of hallway] This way, Mr. Paulus.

[DM follows Paulus & his two guards, at a distance.] 8

Guard - [to laundry man] Hold it. [waits for Paulus & second guard to pass, then lets laundry man go]

[The three men continue through the basement maze. They turn a corner into an open area & guard in front is attacked by man dressed as hotel worker. Another man wearing same outfit comes up behind Paulus, holding a gun. The second guard (the plant?) backs up down the hallway they'd just come from, leaving Paulus on his own. In the next instant, he is thrown back out into the open area again & DM runs out of the hallway. The two workers attack him, & he spends a few minutes taking them out.]

Paulus - You saved my life again. Why are you... WHO are you?

DM - I'm a friend of Darius.

Paulus - You didn't learn this from Darius.

DM - I wasn't much of a student.

Policeman - [rushing in, gun drawn] Freeze! You okay?

Paulus - I'm all right... thanks to this gentleman.

DM - There's another one in the elevator. Find out who paid them. [leaves]

Policeman - [to Paulus] Who was that guy?

Hotel conference room 13

[Grayson checks his watch & smiles knowingly. Then Victor Paulus walks in. Everyone stands & claps as he walks to the podium.]

Paulus - Thank you. Thank you. You've no idea how happy I am to be here tonight. [Grayson gets up angrily & stalks to the door.] Someone once said that peace...

Hotel corridor 13

Usher - Mr. Grayson? [hands Grayson a piece of paper as he exits the conference room]

Grayson - [reads paper] MacLeod.

Randi - [coming out of conference room] Mr. Grayson? It is Grayson, isn't it? I saw you talking to MacLeod the other day. [holds up voice recorder] Any idea who's trying to kill Victor Paulus? [Grayson pushes past her, not saying anything.] Well, excuse me.

ACT FOUR

Establishing shot: sulfur piles, evening 14

Sulfur piles by the docks, evening 15

Grayson - [yelling down the rows of sulfur piles] MacLeod! [walks toward where DM is waiting for him] Sulfur. That was the beginning of it. The Chinese used it to amuse. It took someone of vision to see its true use. To create from it... gunpowder. And the world was never the same again. What about you, MacLeod? Ever done anything that really changed the world? [They circle each other.] Too bad. Now you never will.

CUT

[DM salutes Grayson with katana. Swordfight begins. Fight ranges among the sulfur piles & the conveyor belts & equipment around them.]

Grayson - Another century and you might have beaten me.

[Swordfight continues. Grayson disarms DM.]

Grayson - [raises his sword for final blow] There can be only one!

[DM jumps from conveyor belt to avoid him & both roll to bottom of sulfur pile. DM crawls toward his katana. Thinking he has won, Grayson stalks forward & swings. DM, kneeling with his back to Grayson, suddenly brings his katana up & around, blocking Grayson's stroke, then turns & slashes him across the stomach. The fight begins again, but Grayson is badly wounded & eventually DM disarms him.]

DM - There can be only one. [DM beheads Grayson, takes Quickening, falls to his knees as Quickening ends. 9]

TAG

Establishing shot: Notre Dame Cathedral 16

Outside St. Joseph's 3

Darius - [as DM walks toward chapel] Duncan. Oh. [They embrace.] I heard from Victor Paulus. He told me what you've done.

DM - Yeah, Grayson won't be bothering him anymore.

Darius - He was once my closest friend on earth. How are you?

DM - Well, um, I--

Tessa - [runs out of chapel] Duncan! [They kiss.]

DM - [laughing] I'm fine now.

Darius - Yeah.

RR - [comes out of chapel] Hey, buddy Let's not forget you're on holy ground, here [They hug.] How you doin', my friend?

DM - I'm all right.

RR - Good to see you.

DM - Yeah, well, how are you finding Paris?

RR - Well, I like the Parisian ladies quite a bit. Yeah. Still dealing with this little language barrier, though. Trying to figure out just quite how to break the ice.

DM - Will you excuse us? [pulls Tessa away]

Darius - [watching them go] Oh. I believe they need to "break the ice." [leans toward RR] I wasn't always a priest, you know. When I was a young man, the first thing you had to do when introduced to a woman was compliment her father's horse. That... well, that probably doesn't help you.

RR - Aah... no, not a whole lot. [turns to follow DM & Tessa]

Darius - Ah... [grabs RR by the shoulders & turns him back toward the chapel] Let me tell you a story.

[They walk back toward the chapel as DM & Tessa walk hand in hand down the street. 10] 17

Establishing shot: Arc de Triomphe 1

Café by the Seine, night 18

Tessa - [as DM hands her a bouquet of flowers] Ah, Duncan. I want to lock you in a hotel room with me for a week.

DM - Yeah, well, maybe I should send you away more often.

Tessa - [chuckles] Duncan? I love my new job. I'd like to stay here. Just for a while.

DM - Want some company?

Tessa - I'd love company.

DM - Yeah?

Tessa - Yeah. But only if you want to.

DM - Well, Paris, huh?

Tessa - Mm-hm.

DM - Well, I guess I could, uh... hang out here for a while. It's a good job, huh?

Tessa - Great job.

DM - Great. I like being kept.

Tessa - Kept?

DM - Yeah. You know, I mean... I can, uh, hang out on the barge, catch up on my reading while you bring home the bacon.

Tessa - Barge? What barge?

DM - Oh, I forgot to tell you about the barge. No self-respecting museum curator would live anywhere else.

Tessa - Ah, so I slave away all day while you sunbathe on a barge, is that it?

DM - Yeah! Yeah, but just think of how... rested I'll be. [chuckles, then kisses her as they walk off down the street] 11
