Eurominutes: The full version of this episode runs 48 minutes, but for the domestic (US) market, this was cut shorter for commercials. "Eurominutes" are those 4-5 minutes that European fans got to see but US fans missed out on when the episodes originally aired. (Subsequent reruns on USANetwork and SciFi/Syfy may or may not adhere to the original domestic cut.) Huge thanks to Gillian Horvath for providing the tape of the official domestic cut of this episode, as it was released by the studio for the US stations.

~Official Eurominutes are bolded.
~Rerun on Syfy (2010) matches the official cut, with two exceptions.

[Voice-over by Joe Dawson]
He is Immortal, born in the highlands of Scotland four hundred years ago. He is not alone. There are others like him -- some good, some evil. For centuries, he has battled the forces of darkness, with holy ground his only refuge. He cannot die, unless you take his head, and with it his power. In the end, there can be only one. He is Duncan MacLeod... the Highlander.

OPENING CREDITS

TEASER

Near boatyard 1

[Kenny watches a homeless man pushing a cart. The man sits down & unwraps a sandwich. Kenny picks up a brick, sneaks up behind the man, knocks him unconscious, & steals his sandwich.]

Boatyard 1

DM - [on deck of wooden boat] What do you mean you don't like it?

RR - No, no, no. I never said I didn't like it. I just said it's not my thing.

DM - Richie, there's nothing in the world like an old wooden ketch.

RR - Oh, sure. You know, painting, scraping the hull, cleaning the barnacles... and that's before you hit the water.

DM - Have you never wanted to stand at the helm and feel the wind in your face?

RR - Oh, sure I have. Doing ninety down the I-5 on top of twelve hundred cc's of bored-out Harley.

DM - Last of the red-hot romantics. Richie, a wooden boat is alive... it speaks to you.

RR - Well, so does fiberglass, Mac, and it says "low maintenance". [as DM climbs off boat] Aren't you gonna buy it?

DM - No. Hull's full of dry rot.

<RR - What do you mean, "No. Hull's full of dry rot"? You knew that all along. You son of a bitch. You made me come all the way down here and you never even wanted to buy the boat. I can't believe you. [climbs off boat] 1

DM - It's all part of your training.

RR - What?

DM - You know -- a little more culture in your life.

RR - What do you mean, culture? What are you talking about? It's an old boat.

DM - An old boat? I see you still don't understand what it's about.

RR - Yeah, like I don't have enough to {do}? What do you mean I don't -- What don't I understand? Explain it to me.

DM - An old ketch is--> CUT [Both sense buzz, look for its source.] Be careful. [They split up.]

Under pier 1

DM - [finds Kenny hiding] Don't be afraid. I'm not going to hurt you.

Kenny - That's what you all say. [turns away]

DM - Look at me. [Kenny turns back.] My name's Duncan MacLeod. Give me your hand. [holds out his hand] Come on. Let's go down. [Kenny takes his hand, climbs down fron his hiding spot.] What's your name?

Kenny - Kenny.

DM - It's going to be okay, Kenny. Come on. [They meet up with RR.] It's all right.

RR - Where is he, Mac?

DM - You're looking at him.

ACT ONE

Dojo 0

DM - So, where are you from, Kenny?

Kenny - Wisconsin.

DM - You're a long way from home. Is that where it happened?

Kenny - Yeah. Four years ago. I was ten. My mom and dad took me out for my birthday. A drunk driver hit our car.

DM - When did you know?

Kenny - When I woke up. There was a sheet over me. I could hear the policemen talking. They said it was too bad I was dead.

RR - What about your folks?

Kenny - That car was all on fire.

DM - So you ran?

Kenny - Yeah.

DM - Did you meet any of us?

Kenny - Sometimes. They mostly tried to kill me. Then I met Frank. Frank was nice. He showed me how to fish.

Flashback - Crystal Lake 2

Frank - [showing Kenny how to fly fish] See, you make it kiss the water, just like it was alive. You get the fish interested. And then... you drop it on his tail. Want to give it a try?

Kenny - [struggling with his rod] It's tough... there's all this line everywhere.

Frank - Well, patience, Kenny. That's what it's all about.

CUT

Kenny - You know, Frank, if you hadn't found me, someone would've killed me by now.

Frank - Don't you worry about that, pal. As long as you're with me, no one's going to hurt you. CUT Now come here. Why don't you show me what you can do? < CUT [switches rods with Kenny] Okay, nice and easy. [trying to untangle Kenny's line] What did you do over here? [laughs]>

Kenny - Frank! Frank! I got one!

Frank - First time? Okay, okay, okay. Kenny, now bring it in real easy.

Kenny - I can't. He's pulling too hard!

Frank - That's 'cause you gotta get him real tired. You gotta play him. [as Kenny struggles] Here. Watch this now, okay? [switches rods with him again] Now, this last part is real tricky.

Kenny - Okay, Frank. I'll get the net.

Frank - Oh, he's a big one, Kenny! He's a big one!

Dojo 0

(resume previous scene)

DM - Where's Frank?

Kenny - Dead. Some guy cut off his head. I thought you guys would kill me, too.

DM - You don't have to worry about that.

RR - Yeah, it's okay, bud. You'll be fine.

Kenny - [looks around] This place is cool. These things all yours?

DM - Yeah.

Kenny - Can I touch 'em?

DM - Go ahead. [Kenny goes to sword display on wall.]

RR - [quietly] Mac, he's just a kid. I've never seen such a young Immortal.

DM - You won't see many others, either.

RR - Why not?

DM - He just told you. He's not big enough, and he'll never be strong enough.

RR - So how's he gonna survive?

DM - Any way he can.

Flashback - Virginia, 1862 - bridge near wooded area 2

[Super: Virginia 1862]

[DM hides in brush beside road with two slaves. A group of Confederate soldiers approaches down the road.]

DM - It's all right. We're nearly there. Go.

[They run down the road & across the bridge.]

<Commander - [to his troops] You lads have been through a lot today, but we must take this bridge. Are you with me, men? CUT

Men - Yeah!>

Commander - The Rebs may take the battle, but they'll not take the war! We must not falter! We take the bridge and we hold it!

DM - [arrives] You can't. There's a column coming down the road. If you try taking it now, they'll cut you to pieces!

Commander - I'll take no advice from a man too cowardly to wear a uniform.

DM - There's no glory in having your men slaughtered like sheep!

Commander - Go back to your Negroes, abolitionist, and leave the fighting to men!

DM - What the hell do you think you're fighting for?

Commander - [ignores him] Bugler!

[Bugler raises his instrument & starts to play the charge.]

DM - [stops him] This is madness! They'll be waiting for you. They'll cut you to pieces.

Commander - [aims pistol at him] Your next word will be your last. Bugler! [Bugler sounds the charge.] Forward!

[The soldiers charge across the bridge & are shot down by the Confederate soldiers on the other side. The remaining soldiers break & run.]

Commander - Cowards! Stand and fight! [The Commander & DM are both shot down.]

[later]

[Sean, a drummer boy, moves across the bridge, rifling the pockets of the dead soldiers. DM revives, & Sean senses his 'buzz'.]

Sean - [nudges DM's shoulder] Sir? I know you're not dead. You can't be. You're like me.

DM - You're just a boy.

Sean - I'm one of you. What do we do? The battle's passed us...

DM - Give me a hand. [Sean helps him to his feet.] Did you see a Negro woman and a man?

Sean - No, sir.

DM - This is no place for a boy... even one of us. Come on.

Loft above dojo, night 0

DM - You can stay here tonight. We'll find something better for you in the morning. [begins making up a bed on the couch]

Kenny - Um, I get really scared sometimes.

DM - That's all right. You're safe, now.

[Knock at door.]

Kenny - What's that?

DM - Oh, that's Anne. Don't worry, she's a friend of mine. We're going out tonight.

Kenny - You're leaving?

DM - Don't worry. Richie's coming over to stay with you. Oh, and Kenny, be careful what you say in front of Anne. She doesn't know about us. [opens door, greets Anne] Hi.

Anne - [enters loft] Hi.

DM - You look great.

Anne - Thanks. [sees Kenny] Oh, you have company.

DM - Oh, that's Kenny.

Kenny - I'm his cousin.

DM - Second cousin.

Anne - I didn't know you had family in town.

Kenny - I'm from Wisconsin.

DM - He's visiting.

Anne - Well, hi, Kenny. I'm Anne. [shakes his hand]

Kenny - Hi. [to DM] Is this your girlfriend?

DM - [laughs] I'm working on it.

Anne - [laughs] So, is, uh -- is Duncan showing you a good time?

DM - Well, he just got here, but, um... I think we should go.

Anne - Um, it's really none of my business, but isn't he just a little bit too young to be staying alone? CUT

Flashback - Virginia, 1862 - old farm house 3

DM - Come here, boy.

Catherine - Duncan, are you all right?

DM - Yes, I'm fine. Catherine, can you look after the boy for me tonight?

Catherine - Of course.

DM - I've gotta go find the others.

Catherine - Where are they?

DM - I lost them in the battle.

Sean - Don't go. Please!

DM - I have to.

Catherine - You'll be fine here. This house has sheltered more than you can count.

Sean - But we should stay together! We're two of a kind -- brethren.

DM - Yes, we are, Sean. But I have to find those people I left out there. They won't get north without me.

Sean - I want to stay with you. There could be others around.

DM - There always are. You'll be safer here.

Sean - I'm safer with you.

DM - Not where I'm going. I'll be back for you. That's a promise. [leaves]

Loft above dojo, night 0

Robot toy - [mechanical voice] I want your head. You must die.

Kenny - [playing with robot] How do you stand it?

RR - Stand what?

Kenny - Knowing you won't get any older.

RR - Well, I try to think about the good things.

Kenny - Like what?

RR - Like, uh, I'll never have arthritis. Like I get to keep this hair forever.

Kenny - It's different for you. You're almost a grown up. If the crash hadn't happened, I'd be older, too. A lot older.

RR - Yeah, about fourteen. Look, Kenny, it happened. You gotta stop beating yourself up about it.

Joe's Bar, night 0

[A band is playing on the stage. DM & Anne are sitting at a table, listening.]

Anne - I really like this place. I'm surprised I've never heard of it before.

DM - Oh, it's only been open a couple of months.

Anne - Oh. 2 So, how long is, uh, your cousin staying for?

DM - [to waitress] Uh, excuse me. Can I have a drink, please?

Waitress - Okay.

Anne - I'll have a red wine.

Waitress - Okay.

DM - And a single malt, please. [Anne clears her throat as Waitress leaves.] What?

Anne - Your cousin. How long is he staying for?

DM - Who?

Anne - Kenny.

DM - Kenny!

Anne - Kenny.

DM - My cousin.

Anne - Yes!

DM - My cousin.

Anne - Are you feeling okay?

DM - I'm fine. Uh, well, two, three weeks. I'm not sure, really.

Anne - Shouldn't he be in school or something?

DM - He's on vacation.

Anne - Oh.

DM - It's a public-- private school.

Anne - Oh.

DM - Yeah.

Anne - So--

DM - So.

Anne - Wisconsin.

DM - Hm. Yeah.

Anne - I've never been there. Tell me what it's like.

DM - Uh, it's, uh, very nice. They, uh, raise cows. They make cheese. You know?

Anne - Yeah, I know. You must, uh--

DM - [as Waitress brings their drinks] Thank you.

Anne - You must be pretty close to Kenny's parents.

DM - Well, I have their son.

Anne - Yeah, you do.

DM - [clinks his glass against hers] Cheers.

Anne - Cheers. [takes a sip] Mm. All right, then tell me about your family.

DM - Well, they'd seem really old-fashioned to you.

Anne - Oh, I'll bet they're fascinating. What does your father do?

DM - He's career military. Or was.

Anne - And your mother?

DM - She was married to my father. 3

Loft above dojo, night 0

(resume previous scene)

RR - All right, Kenny. Maybe you're never gonna have some things, but you might live a thousand years.

Kenny - As a ten-year-old? Perfect! I'll be a kid all my life -- always running... always hiding. I'll never be able to fight worth a damn!

RR - Even small guys can fight, Kenny. I tell you what. How about I show you how to handle yourself?

Kenny - Really?

RR - You got it.

Kenny - All right.

RR - Give me five. [Kenny slaps his palm.] Right on, brother. [Both sense 'buzz'.]

Kenny - Duncan.

RR - Maybe. Look. I'm gonna be right back, but if I'm not, get your butt out the back door and don't look back. You got it? All right. [leaves]

Dojo, night 0

[Dallman Ross enters dojo. RR exits elevator. They approach each other.]

Ross - Who the hell are you?

RR - I'll be the one asking the questions.

Ross - I'm Dallman Ross, if that means anything.

RR - Not to me.

Ross - Where is the boy?

RR - Get outta here.

Ross - You don't know what he is.

RR - No, but I know what you are.

Ross - I don't want to kill you. Please, just get out of my way.

RR - Not a chance.

Ross - You're a fool. I'll be back. Next time I'll have him... and anyone else who gets in my way. [leaves]

[RR turns, walks across dojo to elevator, enters & lowers gate. A]

ACT TWO

Loft above dojo, next morning 0

DM - Did you get a chance to see him?

Kenny - Richie scared him away.

RR - I told you, he said his name was Dallman Ross.

DM - Any idea why he's after you?

Kenny - Because I'm little, easy to kill.

DM - There's nothing else?

Kenny - Nothing.

DM - Kenny, we got lucky last night. Richie and I won't always be there.

Kenny - He'll come again. Richie said so. He'll kill me!

DM - Then we'll have to find a way to keep you safe. I know a priest that runs a church school.

Kenny - You're sending me away? I don't want to live with a priest.

DM - You know about holy ground? [Kenny nods.] Then you know it's the only place they can't come for you.

Kenny - [nods again, reluctantly] Are we leaving today?

DM - No. We'll go tomorrow. 4 Tell you what... today's your day. We'll do whatever you want to do.

Kenny - Can we go fishing?

DM - Sure.

Crystal Lake 2

DM - So, is this where Frank brought you?

Kenny - Yeah. I miss Frank. He showed me how to cast... everything.

DM - Why don't you teach me?

Kenny - Sure. [hands DM a rod]

DM - Where do we start?

Kenny - First, you gotta put the rod together. [demonstrates. DM puts the other rod together expertly.] Yeah. You're good at this.

DM - Well, I've got a good teacher.

Kenny - I'll go get some feathers for the flies.

DM - Some feathers?

Kenny - Yeah. Frank taught me. It works every time. Duncan? Did you know every day you fish adds a year to your life?

Flashback - Crystal Lake 2

Kenny - Frank! Frank! I got one!

Frank - Here. Here. Watch this now, okay? [switches rods with Kenny] Now, this last part is real tricky... 'cause you can't bring him in too fast.

Kenny - Okay, Frank. I'll get the net.

Frank - Oh, he's a big one, Kenny! He's a big one! Oh-ho-ho! Patience, Kenny. You know what the Chinese say? [Kenny appears behind him holding a short sword.] Every day you fish adds another year to your life.

Kenny - [raises his sword] You think so, Frank?

[Frank turns. Kenny beheads him & takes his Quickening.]

Crystal Lake 2

(resume previous scene)

[Kenny starts to pull his short sword out of a duffle bag as DM sits nearby stringing line onto his rod. Anne appears from the woods, & Kenny quickly shoves the sword back out of sight & runs down to join DM.]

DM - So where are the feathers?

Kenny - I couldn't find them.

Anne - [joining them, carrying a picnic basket] Hey!

DM - Hey. What's that? Lunch?

Anne - Oh, strictly backup. I'm sure a couple of tough guys like you can outsmart a few tiny creatures with the brains of a flashlight. Hey, Kenny.

Kenny - [sullen] Hi.

Anne - You know, I can't remember the last time I went fishing. Matter of fact, I don't think I've ever been fishing. [to Kenny] Maybe you can teach me?

Kenny - I said I'd teach Duncan, not you.

DM - Hey, Anne's a friend.

Kenny - Your friend, not mine. [walks off. DM watches him go with a frown.] CUT

<Anne - Whoa. Is he okay?

DM - Yeah.

Anne - Hi.

DM - Hi. [They try to kiss, miscommunicate, & DM ends up kissing her cheek.]

Anne - [laughs] Let's try that again.> 5

Dojo 0

DM - [follows Kenny inside] You want to talk about it?

Kenny - Talk about what?

DM - You know what I mean. Why'd you treat Anne that way?

Kenny - It was supposed to be the two of us.

DM - Kenny, Anne's trying hard to be nice. What's the problem? [enters elevator with Kenny]

Kenny - CUT I just don't like her, okay?

DM - Well, I do. Got it? [pokes Kenny in the chest with the net] Huh?

Kenny - Okay.

DM - Hey.

Kenny - What?

DM - Richie's gonna be upstairs. He's going to be staying with you for a while.

Kenny - What for?

DM - Because. [exits elevator, pulls grate down for Kenny] 6

Establishing shot: "Joe's Bar" sign 0

Joe's Bar 0

Joe - You sure it was Dallman Ross?

DM - That's what he said.

Joe - Ross has been a school teacher since the American Revolution. He started wandering about twenty years ago, right after his wife was killed. 7 This is not the kind of guy that would try and whack a kid.

DM - Well, do me a favor.

Joe - Sure.

DM - Look into it. I want to know where Ross and Kenny met before.

Joe - All right.

DM - Thanks.

Joe - Yeah. [DM leaves.]

Empty dojo 0

RR - [standing behind Kenny] Okay, so somebody comes at you from behind. [grabs him] What are you gonna do? [Kenny reaches down, grabs RR's leg & pulls.] Right. [RR falls over onto his back, then uses his feet to knock Kenny down.] No, that's no good, Kenny. You gotta really twist that foot. You gotta be quicker.

Kenny - It's no good! I'm too small.

RR - It's okay. You gotta keep trying. You can't learn it all in one day. Now come on, let's do it again.

Kenny - What's the point? [picks up bottle of soda from nearby stool, takes a swig] Look at me, Richie. I'll never be able to drive a car, never be old enough to have a woman. I'll never be able to fight worth a damn! [slams bottle back onto stool, knocking the other bottle off & breaking it] Oh, man... I can't do anything right.

RR - It's okay, Kenny. It can happen to anybody. CUT <Look, uh, why don't you just go relax, chill out, take a break, and, uh, I'll clean this up, we'll get back to work. Okay? [Kenny moves away as RR starts cleaning up.] You gotta trust me, Ken. You gotta hang in there. You'll get the hang of it. [Kenny looks at sword display on wall.] I mean, I didn't know {a thing about} how to fight until Mac taught me. You've just got to keep at it, you know -- keep working. I guarantee you'll get it. [Kenny reaches for one of the swords.] I mean, the first time I tried it, I ended up on my can. And come to think of it, the second time, too. [Kenny removes the sword from the display.] Kenny, look, I'm not saying it's gonna be easy, but sometimes you just gotta trust someone. [RR is still kneeling next to the stool, picking up pieces of broken bottle. Kenny stalks toward him, raises the sword. Both sense 'buzz'. Kenny lowers the sword quickly as DM enters dojo.]

DM - Hey, guys. What's up?

RR - Mac, how're you doing? I'm just, uh, teaching Kenny here a few things.

DM - [to Kenny] Learning a lot?

Kenny - Yeah.

DM - [takes sword from him] Maybe we should use something else, though, huh?>

ACT THREE

Loft above dojo 0

[Kenny is sitting at the kitchen bar, drinking another soda & reading a magazine. DM walks past, pulling on a shirt, opens door as Anne knocks.]

<DM - [greets Anne] Hi. CUT

Anne - Hi.

DM - How are you? [kisses her]

Anne - Mm. Better now.

DM - I was just making some tea. You want some?

Anne - Actually, I just swung by to see if maybe Kenny felt like doing something.

DM - Why don't you ask him?>

Kenny - I don't.

Anne - Now, aren't you just a little bit too young to be such an old grouch?

Kenny - He sleeps with a lot of women, and you're not the prettiest. He had one here last night. [flips magazine around] Like that. [shows her photo of pretty woman]

Anne - [laughs] Okay, Kenny... look, uh, we got off to a really bad start yesterday, so... what do you say you and I take off, just the two of us?

Kenny - Why?

Anne - Because I want to. What do you say?

DM - I don't think that's a good idea. Kenny shouldn't be on his own right now.

Anne - Well, Duncan, he's not going to be on his own. He's gonna be with me. I thought maybe we'd go to the park for an hour.

DM - How about we go together? Well, he's my responsibility.

Flashback - Virginia, 1862 - wooded area 4

[Three slaves are being held by a group of Confederate soldiers. DM grabs a broken branch & sneaks up on the group.]

Soldier - [to slave] Kneel!

[DM knocks one soldier out with the branch, then jumps two others. One of the slaves joins in fighting against the soldiers. As they finish, lightning flashes nearby.]

DM - The Union line's a half mile over. Stick to the river. Go. I'll meet you there.

[The slaves take off in one direction, DM in the other, through the battle, back to the old farm house where he left Sean. He finds Catherine & Sean dead in the front yard. He picks up Sean's body & sadly carries it away. 3]

Park 5

Anne - That looks like fun. [looks at kids playing in skate park]

<Kenny - CUT I don't have a skate.>

Anne - Well, maybe you can borrow one.

Loft above dojo 0

Joe - [exits elevator] Is MacLeod around?

RR - No, not yet. What's up, D?

Joe - This boy you found -- this Kenny--

RR - Yeah?

Joe - He's big trouble.

RR - How much trouble could he be? He's just a kid, Dawson.

Joe - Yeah, right. How old did he say he was?

RR - Ten. Fourteen, really.

Joe - Try more like eight hundred and fourteen.

RR - That's impossible. I mean, he's a -- he's a kid, Dawson. You know, he's a little kid.

Joe - That's what everyone thinks. That kid has outlived a lot of Immortals.

RR - No, it can't be. He's not strong enough to fight.

Joe - Let me guess. When you found him, he was hiding somewhere. He was scared. He was crying. He said an Immortal had killed his teacher. That's his M.O. When people let their guard down, that's it.

RR - Are you sure about this? 8

Joe - Everyone who's taken Kenny in has one thing in common -- they're dead.

Park 5

(resume previous scene)

Anne - Duncan, you know, uh -- Forget it. He's your family, and I have been known to open mouth and insert foot, so...

DM - I think we need a rule here.

Anne - A rule?

DM - Yeah, that you never have to hedge with me.

Anne - Okay. Thanks. [sighs] All right. I, uh, 9 I think your cousin is one heck of a troubled kid.

DM - He's had a tough life. Had to grow up fast.

Jeff - [in distance] Uh! Get off me! Help! Someone get him off me!

DM - [pulls Kenny off of Jeff] What are you doing?

Kenny - He wouldn't lend me his board.

DM - Wait for me over there. Now!

Jeff - [as Anne helps him sit up] I'm all right.

Anne - Okay, you're gonna be fine. You should go home. Why don't you take it easy, okay? Okay, you'll be fine. [Jeff leaves. Anne turns to DM.] You know, there's a terrific child psychiatrist at the hospital. I can get Kenny in right away.

DM - Maybe. I'll think about it.

Anne - All right. I really think he should see someone.

DM - I'll talk to him.

Anne - Okay. Good idea. I'll just wait over here. I need to get back to the hospital. I'll see you later? 10 (this is NOT in the DVD version!)

DM - Yeah. I'll see you later. [goes over to Kenny] So, you want to tell me what that was about?

Kenny - I told you. He wouldn't lend me his board.

DM - That's not good enough.

Kenny - [sighs] Well, I don't know. I guess I just lost it. [Both sense 'buzz', look around, see Dallman Ross nearby.] He's come for me.

DM - Come on. [starts moving away from skate park]

Anne - [joins them] I'm due back at the hospital in about an hour. [to DM] I can make that call.

DM - Let you know later?

Anne - All right. Don't leave it too long.

DM - Yeah. 11

Outside mission near park 5

[Sign over door reads: Congregational Baptist Bible Mission]

Kenny - Where are we going?

DM - To holy ground. You'll be safe there. Now, you sit on the steps and wait until I get back.

Kenny - What about you?

DM - I'll take care of this. Go on. [leaves Kenny at the church, goes to meet Ross]

Alley 6

[DM & Ross approach from opposite ends.]

DM - Dallman Ross?

Ross - Yes. And you are?

DM - Duncan MacLeod. Come for the boy?

Ross - So, he has two of you protecting him now.

DM - One, two -- the answer's the same.

Ross - He's using you, MacLeod, just like he used me. He can't be allowed to live. I've chased him for too long. [draws his sword] I can't let anyone get in my way. [attacks DM. They exchange a few blows.]

DM - [steps back] I'm not your enemy, Ross. Leave the boy alone and walk away.

Ross - I can't. [attacks again]

DM - [disarms him, gets him on the ground at his mercy] {Get} down. [Ross groans.] Why?

Ross - He killed my wife. We treated him like our own son. We loved him.

DM - [lowers his sword, steps back] This one's on me... but you leave the boy alone.

Ross - [as DM walks off] Watch your head, MacLeod. [to himself] Don't trust him. [picks up his sword, sits at bottom of nearby metal staircase]

Outside mission near park 5

[DM goes back for Kenny. Kenny is gone.]

Alley 6

[Dalman sits at bottom of metal staircase. 12 Sword in hand, Kenny climbs down fire escape onto metal staircase, sneaks down behind Ross.]

Ross - [senses 'buzz'] MacLeod?

[Kenny beheads him, takes his Quickening. DM sees the lightning, runs back toward alley, finds Ross' headless body.]

CUT

ACT FOUR

Loft above dojo 0

Joe - I'm sorry. Ross was a good man.

DM - He was no better than the rest of us. He was there to kill Kenny.

Joe - Well, he had a reason. This Kenny is evil, MacLeod. Old evil.

DM - Then so are we! Eight years, eight hundred years -- makes no difference, Dawson. B He's doing what we all do. He's fighting for his life!

RR - Mac, he's a lying little bastard. He sets up people who try to help him.

DM - He has to! That's the only way he can survive. He thinks every Immortal is his enemy, so he kills them before they kill him. Let me ask you something. What would you do?

RR - I don't know.

DM - Yes, you do! What have you been doing all this year? Knitting? You've been learning to fight so you can kill, so you can survive. That's all Kenny's doing. He wants to live. There can be only one, Richie. You know it, I know it... and Dallman Ross knew it, too.

Joe - What about his wife?

DM - It's the same for all of us, Dawson. It makes no difference -- man or woman.

Joe - His wife was mortal. Just in the wrong place at the wrong time. She kept Kenny from killing Ross. She died for it.

[DM considers this briefly, then grabs his coat & runs for the elevator.]

Hospital parking garage 7

[Anne enters garage, walks toward her car.]

Kenny - [watching from nearby car] Bitch. [hotwires car, drives toward her, chases her around the garage. DM appears, pushing her out of the way.]

DM - Get up!

[He helps her to her feet as Kenny circles back. They run. Kenny drives after them. They duck around a parked car. Kenny turns his car too sharply & hits the parked car. He jumps out & runs away.]

DM - Are you okay?

Anne - Yeah. I think so.

DM - [looks up, sees Kenny running off] Get back to the dojo.

Anne - Where are you going?

DM - Stay with Richie. [runs off after Kenny]

Anne - No! Duncan, I'm all right! Leave it to the cops! [reacts to hurt wrist]

Outside parking garage 8

Kenny - [runs up to paramedic] Help... please! There's a man -- he's after me! He's psycho! [keeps running]

DM - [exits parking garage] Kenny! Kenny!

Paramedic - Maybe you should pick on someone your own size?

DM - I don't have time for this. [knocks paramedic down] Sorry. [takes off after Kenny]

Outside factory 9

[DM senses 'buzz', enters factory.] 13

Inside factory 10

[Kenny hides among the crawl-ways & ventilation shafts as DM walks through the factory.]

DM - I know you're here, Kenny. Come out. We can talk about this. [No answer. DM moves forward cautiously.] Why Anne? She was no danger to you.

Kenny - [calls out from his hiding place] She was in my way. I hate it when people get in my way!

DM - Like Frank Brody? Brody would've protected you. Ross would've protected you. I would protect you.

Kenny - For how long? Such a small boy... such easy prey! [DM looks around but still can't see him.] All of you would have taken my head eventually. [unscrews bolt, looks down at DM] There's no other way. [knocks loosened machinery down onto DM, climbs down & stands over him] It all comes down to one thing, MacLeod. In the end, there can be only one. [raises his sword] It might as well be me. [starts to swing sword down]

[DM grabs Kenny's sword hand, pushes him away, rolls machinery off his chest & draws his katana. Kenny runs as DM gets to his feet.]

DM - Kenny! [runs after him]

Outside factory 9

[DM exits factory, looks around. School bus drives past. Kenny stares out the back window at DM as bus drives away.]

Establishing shot: Dojo 11

Loft above dojo 0

Anne - [as DM exits elevator] Duncan! Oh, God. Are you okay? [hugs him, kisses him]

DM - Fine.

Anne - What happened?

DM - I'll tell you later.

Anne - Would you promise me something, please?

DM - We're up to that, are we?

Anne - Maybe. I'm starting to like you. And, uh, I don't want to go to work and find you stretched out on one of my gurneys. So would you please leave that Rambo stuff to the police?

DM - Next time I'll try and be more careful.

Anne - Thank you. 14 So, where's Kenny?

DM - I sent him home.

Anne - Oh, great! [off DM's look] I mean, I know he's, you know, your family and everything, but didn't you just once feel like just smacking him one? [pauses] I can't believe I said that. Did I just say that?

DM - Yeah, you did.

Anne - [laughs] Sorry. You'll let me know how he's doing?

DM - Sure. [Anne takes his drink from him, sips it.] For medicinal purposes?

Anne - Mm. It has been one hell of a day.

DM - Yeah, it has. [They snuggle on the couch.]

Anne - So, um, we're up to that, are we?

DM - Maybe.

Anne - Maybe. [They kiss.]
