TEASER

Establishing shot: Macao 1

[Super: Macao]

Macao - noodle warehouse 4

[A Mah Jongg game is in action. Several workers tend drying stands of noodles nearby.]

Kit - Did you know the interesting thing about this game? Does anyone at this table realize this game was actually invented by an American? It's an American game. It's absolutely true. Joseph P. Babcock, I believe his name was. It was back in the twenties. The remarkable thing about it then was the game was not known as mah-jongg. It was mah-jangg... Jangg. Oh, sorry. So sorry. We're in the middle of a hand here. All right. [looks at tiles] Three sets to Li Chan. It's a Kong to Jiang over there. Dragon Kong, if I'm not mistaken. And Mister Lin... would rather I shut up and just play, which I'm going to do. [straightens his row of tiles, kisses the head of his walking cane] My move. Blind -- American style. [closes his eyes, draws tile from center of table, adds it to his row] Don't know this game that well, but I think they call this, if I'm not wrong... [turns his row of tiles face up] <Dragon Wu. CUT Yes! Oh! Some days are -- Oh! Oh, this is so good! [as other players start paying up] Thank you so very much, gentlemen. I really enjoyed playing with you all night. You guys are real sports. Tell you what. [collecting stacks of bills] Breakfast is on me. My apologies to your wives keeping you out all night. [puts some money back on the table] Thank you very much, fellas. Oh, I enjoyed this night so much. You guys are wonderful to play with. Thank you very much. [puts his winnings in a satchel]>

Ray - [enters warehouse] I see your luck has changed, Kit.

Kit - Aw, not now. Be reasonable. I'm on a roll right here. Can't you see what just happened? I've got something going on here. You know how much I've won? Sixty-five grand!

Ray - Oh, good. Then you only owe us another hundred and fifty thousand.

Kit - The only reason why I need this money -- I've got a thoroughbred I'm going to buy. This horse will get you all of your money back.

Ray - [points pistol at Kit] You have two choices, Kit. [The rest of the mah-jongg players scatter.]

<Kit - Wait. Now, don't tell me. Okay, let me think. First choice, uh, I die? CUT

Ray - Or you die.

Kit - Let me think this over.> [punches Ray, runs. Ray shoots him & he falls down a garbage chute. Holding his nose, Ray shoots several times down the chute after him.]

Maintenance room below warehouse 4

[Kit falls down chute into garbage bin.]

Ray - [muffled, from above] You're a dead man, O'Brady, you hear me? A dead man!

Kit - [to nearby workers] Just my luck. The guy can shoot. Could've been worse. I could've... fallen in a sewer. [dies]

[Worker reaches for Kit's satchel.]

[meanwhile, upstairs]

Ray - [to Luis] Move it!

[downstairs]

[Worker grabs the satchel, hears voices coming.]

Ray - [offscreen, muffled] Come on. Hurry up!

[Worker hides satchel, covers Kit's body with pieces of trash.]

Ray - [comes down staircase, followed by Luis] Bastard! I know I hit him. [grabs worker] You! The white man, where did he go? [Worker points out door.] Go! [follows Luis outside]

[The worker grabs the satchel from its hiding place, pulls handful of bills out, laughs.] CUT

<Kit - Where's my bag? [stands up, sees worker] Oh, you've got it. Great. [takes bag back] Thank you very much indeed. Hey, cheer up. Hey, sometimes they stay dead, sometimes they don't. Mm. Okay. Excuse me. [climbs out of garbage bin, leaves]>

[Voice-over by Joe Dawson]
He is Duncan MacLeod... the Highlander. Born in 1592 in the Highlands of Scotland, and he is still alive. He is Immortal. For four hundred years, he's been a warrior... a lover... a wanderer. Constantly facing other Immortals in combat to the death. The winner takes his enemy's head, and with it, his power. I am a Watcher -- part of a secret society of men and women who observe and record... but never interfere. We know the truth about Immortals. In the end, there can be only one. May it be Duncan MacLeod... the Highlander.

OPENING CREDITS

ACT ONE

Establishing shot: MacLeod's Victorian 3

MacLeod's Victorian - basement 0

[Camera pans across basement to DM standing on ladder. 1 DM is taping a furnace duct, senses 'buzz', hears someone sneezing.]

Kit - [enters basement] MacLeod? Hey!

DM - Kit!

Kit - How are you?

DM - Kit.

Kit - MacLeod. Great to see you.

DM - How are you? [moves to hug him]

Kit - Please, please, please, don't hug me.

DM - What?

Kit - These clothes are made in Macao. I don't need all this on them.

DM - Well, I'm not dirty.

Kit - [looks at him] Okay.

DM - I thought you were coming by the dojo.

Kit - Well, I got in early. I thought I'd come by and see what you're up to. Exactly what are you up to?

DM - Ducting.

Kit - You know, there's -- there's people you can hire to do this sort of thing for you. You pay them. They're called workers.

DM - Really?

Kit - Mm-hmm.

DM - Well, maybe you should try it.

Kit - Oh, no, no, no. See these hands? Not one solitary callus. Now that's something a man can be proud of.

Flashback - San Francisco, 1888 - Double Eagle Gambling Palace 4

[Super: San Francisco 1888]

CUT

[DM grabs Davis' hand, turns it over, pulls cards out of wrist garter hidden inside Davis' sleeve.]

DM - You ought to be faster than that if you want to hustle the table. [holds up an ace of spades and 10 of hearts]

Davis - [points derringer at DM] Faster than this?

Kit - [smacks Davis' hand with his cane, making him drop the gun] Now, two things I will not abide, Davis, is sneaky little guns and people who cheat at my tables. [punches him in the gut & jaw] Now, let's go outside. That hurts, huh? All right. Well, you're off early tonight. [escorts Davis out]

Davis - You've broken my arm! Aah! Aah! [Kit pushes him out the door & down the stairs.]

Kit - [to patrons] Oh, ladies and gentlemen, please, The show is over. There was nobody killed or anything. Go back to drinking and gambling your little greedy hearts out! [walks back to DM] MacLeod, I'm mortified.

DM - Well, there's really no need. After all, my life wasn't in danger.

Kit - No, but he would've ruined a perfectly good shirt... and that would have been unforgivable.

<DM - Mm. Well, I hope you can restore my losses.

Kit - Oh, that's right. You had -- you had a bet out there.

DM - Yeah.

Kit - How much did you have?

DM - At least two thousand.

Kit - No, it wasn't.

DM - Yes, it was.

Kit - Oh, please--

DM - It was at least--

[Both sense 'buzz'. Kit sneezes.]

Kit - Every time. It's like an allergy.> CUT

[Amanda enters the room, smiles at DM. DM smiles back.]

Kit - Now that is what I call style.

DM - That is Amanda.

<Gentleman - Whoever you are, you're exquisite.

Amanda - Merci, monsieur. You're too kind.> CUT

Translation: Merci, monsieur. - Thank you, sir.

Kit - The lady can make an entrance.

Kit - Introduce us.

DM - Mm. You should see her exit.

<Amanda - [offscreen] Of course you can.

DM - [as Amanda approaches] Amanda, good evening.

Amanda - Ah. Bonsoir, MacLeod. Ça va? [DM gives her a look as he kisses her hand. She looks over at Kit.]

Translations: Bonsoir - Good evening; Ça va - It goes (slang: How are you?)

Kit - French. How do you do? [kisses her hand]> CUT

DM - Oh, this is, uh, Kit O'Brady, um, the owner of this den of iniquity.

Amanda - Enchanté.

Translation: Enchanté - Enchanted

Kit - Oh, no. The pleasure's mine. [to DM] She's French. I like that. [to Amanda] Well, welcome to the Double Eagle. You must find this terribly, terribly, terribly provincial after being in Europe all that time.

Amanda - [with French accent] Oh, not at all. The body on the steps was a nice touch.

Kit - [chuckles] Oh, yeah. I do try.

Amanda - [looks around] Oh, this place is magnifique.

Kit - Magnifique. Thank you very much. Thank you. [hands her glass of wine]

Amanda - [with French accent] Merci. Now, the Double Eagle... is that a family crest?

<Kit - [looks at DM] "Kwest"? CUT

DM - Crest.

Kit - [to Amanda] Crest? No, coin. It's a coin. That is the actual coin right in the center there. Do you see it? We mounted it.> [points to coin in center of Double Eagle Casino sign on wall] When I first sailed into San Francisco all those years ago, the only thing I had in my pocket was that gold coin. And to tell you the truth--

DM - He wouldn't have any of this without it. [laughs] He could go on like this all night, but I think our game's arrived, so--

[Count enters with a woman on each arm.]

Amanda - [with French accent] Oh! Cards? How exciting. Do you think maybe I might join in?

Kit - Oh, you play? [Behind him, DM shakes his head at Amanda, trying to warn her off.]

Amanda - [with French accent] Oh, just a little whist now and then.

Kit - [to DM] A little whist.

DM - I don't think this is a good idea, Kit.

<Kit - [to Amanda] Of course you could play. It would be my great pleasure to teach you the game. [kisses her hand] CUT

Amanda - Merci.

Kit - I'll just go and see to the count. [walks over to Count] Ah, Count.

Count - Ah, Mr. Broddy.

Kit - [shakes his hand] O'Brady. [encouragingly] Nice try.

Count - Exactly.

Kit - I see you brought your banker with you.

Count - Of course.

Kit - [to banker] Enjoy a game? [Banker nods, shakes Kit's hand.]

Count - So where shall we have it?

Dealer - Back to the business at hand.

Kit - This table behind you. 2

Dealer - [offscreen] Let's continue on, then, shall we?>

DM - [grabs Amanda's arm] No cheating.

Amanda - When did I ever...

DM - None whatsoever. CUT

<Amanda - [with French accent] Oh, very well.

DM - What is with this phony French accent?

Amanda - You used to be so much fun.

DM - [as Amanda walks off] It's not even that good.>

<MacLeod's Victorian - basement 0 CUT

(resume previous scene)

DM - What do you say we grab some lunch?

Kit - Well, I'd love it if we could make that dinner. I've got a really important meeting and I can't -- I can't miss it, so...

DM - Well, sure. Dinner's fine. I know a great Italian.

Kit - Italian? I've been craving Chinese.

DM - Well, I had Chinese last night.

Kit - Okay, I have the answer. We'll flip for it.

DM - Well, why can't we just choose like everybody else?

Kit - Come on. No guts, no glory. Now, we'll flip for it.

DM - All right. Tails it's Italian.

Kit - Tails it's Italian. [tosses coin]

DM - Heh.

Kit - Tails.

DM - Tails.

Kit - Boy, have I been on a bad run, MacLeod. You wouldn't believe it.

DM - How bad?

Kit - A hundred and seven years.

DM - Eh, maybe you should quit gambling.

Kit - I'm not gambling. I've come eight thousand miles on a sure thing -- the perfect horse, and I found her. So I must go. I'll see you tonight. We'll have a nice big bowl of chow mein together.

DM - Pasta.

Kit - [as he walks off] Eh?>

Loft above dojo 0

[DM exits elevator, senses 'buzz'. Amanda exits bathroom wearing a towel.]

<Amanda - CUT MacLeod.> [walks toward him]

DM - You every heard of calling ahead?

Amanda - You know me. I like surprises.

DM - [re her lack of clothing] So I noticed. You planning on staying? [looks at stack of trunks nearby]

Amanda - Well, I was hoping to. If you don't mind.

DM - Oh...

Amanda - What do you say?

DM - Welcome home.

[Amanda kisses him, dropping the towel.]

Establishing shot: Dojo 5

Loft above dojo, later 0

[Close on pot of Beef Stroganoff cooking on stove. Amanda, wearing an apron over a black bra, walks over to pot, grinds some pepper into pot.] 3

Amanda - Um, it's Beef Stroganoff. I had this at the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg with the Czar Nicholas the Second. [as DM comes out of bathroom] For a small man, he had great stamina. 4 [samples the sauce] Mm, it may have tasted better then. What are you doing? You're all dressed up.

DM - What?

Amanda - Well, I thought we'd have dinner in bed...

DM - Dinner?

Amanda - Yeah.

DM - Oh.

Amanda - You know, food, eat. [as he goes over to the pot and sniffs it] But not that.

[Car honks outside.]

DM - It's seven o'clock.

Amanda - Yeah.

DM - Why don't you go ahead without me. I'll be right back.

Amanda - By myself? Listen, I know the Stroganoff isn't any good, but we could have Italian or Chinese.

DM - Anything, but I'll be right back.

Amanda - Okay.

[DM reaches for elevator gate as Amanda turns back toward stove. As he lowers the gate and starts the elevator, she makes a face at the pot of Stroganoff & carries it over to counter. 5]

Dojo 0

[DM exits elevator, senses 'buzz'. Kit sneezes, enters dojo.]

DM - Kit. Hi.

Kit - My God, MacLeod. This is where you live? No wonder you're working on that house.

DM - No. Actually, I live upstairs.

Kit - Oh, that's quite nice.

DM - Yeah, it is. [blocks Kit's path to the elevator] No, you don't want to go up there right now.

Kit - I don't want to go up there?

DM - No. There's nothing to see. It's a mess.

Kit - A mess.

DM - Yeah.

Kit - Well, fine. We'll go out.

DM - Uh, Kit, um, about that dinner... Can we just put it off for now?

Kit - Mac, this is very important.

DM - I know. I know it is. It's just that, uh -- not right now. Tomorrow morning is-- Now's not a good time.

Kit - Why? Ahh. There's a lady upstairs, isn't there?

DM - Uh-- [shrugs]

Kit - Yeah. I got it. Introduce me.

DM - No, no.

Kit - Just introduce me.

DM - No, she's shy. S-she's really shy.

Kit - Oh, she's shy.

DM - Yeah.

Kit - Ohh. Okay. The picture's clear. Fine. Okay -- as long as you promise me tomorrow.

DM - Oh, promise.

Kit - Without fail?

DM - No, without fail.

Kit - I'm just thinking the last time I actually saw you with a lady. Do you remember that? [leans his sword cane against the wooden dummy, picks up wooden practice sword]

DM - No.

Kit - Sure you do. It was that thieving bitch, Amanda.

DM - Oh, Kit. I'm surprised you remember her.

Kit - Amanda? Oh, I remember her. Not a day goes by I don't think about Amanda.

Flashback - San Francisco, 1888 - Double Eagle Gambling Palace 4

Amanda - [with French accent] I cannot believe how much I'm winning. Is it not wonderful?

Kit - Wonderful. You're playing wonderfully.

DM - [unenthusiastic] Unbelievable.

Kit - [throws chips on the pot] There's a huge bet to you.

DM - Well, that's it. I'm out.

Amanda - [with French accent] Aww. But we are having so much fun.

DM - You're having fun. I'm losing.

Kit - Oh, there's a first time for everything, Mac. Don't feel too bad. Amanda, it's your bet.

Amanda - [with French accent] Oh, it, uh-- It's so confusing. [sets her cards down and 6 shoves half of her chips into the pot, pauses a moment, then shoves some more in]

DM - Are you sure you want to do that?

Amanda - [with French accent] Did I do something wrong?

Kit - No, no. Quite good. Bit of a raise there, Count.

Count - Not with this hand. Too rich for my blood.

Kit - Count's out. Banker's long gone. I'm still in, Mac's out. Just you and me, Amanda. Seems a slight raise in there. [tosses in some chips] And, uh, to make it interesting, I am going to raise you ten thousand dollars. [tosses in some more chips] With me on that?

Amanda - [with French accent] But this is all I have!

DM - Oh, this is poker, Amanda. You have to see him or you're out.

[Amanda puts her last stack of chips in.]

Kit - That-a-girl. All right. [prepares to reveal his hand]

Amanda - [with French accent, to DM] Now, um, can I raise him again?

Count - What?

DM - You don't have any money left.

Amanda - [takes off her diamond earrings] [with French accent] These are worth twenty-five thousand. [throws them on the pot] A prince gave them to me.

Kit - [examines an earring] A prince?

Amanda - Oui.

Kit - A piker. Maybe -- maybe on a good day... I'm sorry, madam. Five thousand dollars... on a good day.

Count - You throw in that dress, and I'll stake you the rest.

Amanda - [with French accent] Monsieur, this dress does not come off... for less than a million.

Kit - [as Count coughs] Too rich for your blood there, Count?

Spectator - Touché, my friend.

Amanda - [removes her diamond necklace] [with French accent] But, I will add this. This is worth forty thousand. [tosses it onto the pot]

Man - [as spectators gather] Come over here. You've got to see this.

DM - [sighs] You asked her to play. [Kit examines the necklace.]

Amanda - [with French accent] What is the matter, Monsieur? Are you afraid of a little risk?

<Kit - A little "wisk"? No. Could I have the top card in the shoe, please? Could I please borrow your pen, Michael? [takes pen from the banker] Thank you very much. I hope you'll accept my I.O.U. on this card. [writes on card] Let this represent the deed to the Double Eagle Saloon. CUT

[Spectators gasp and comment.]

Count - [chuckles] Bravo, Monsieur.

Kit - Will you accept that? I'm a single proprietor.

DM - Kit, hold on. Just one second.

Kit - No, no.

DM - This is going too far, Kit.

Kit - This is fine. I live for games like this! This is the best game since I came into San Francisco. Thank you, madam. You accept? [holds up the I.O.U.]

Amanda - Oui, monsieur.

Kit - [puts the card on the pot] The pot's ripe. Remember I mentioned that a full house is a very good hand? That's three of one kind... [lays down three kings] and two of another. [lays down pair of tens]

Count - [clapping] Ohh, bravo. Bravo. [Spectators clap.]

Kit - [modest] Don't.>

Amanda - [with French accent] But all I have are two pairs... [lays down pair of queens]

Kit - That's not very good.

Amanda - [throws down two more cards] Of queens.

Kit - [as spectators react] That's not possible.

Amanda - [with French accent] Ahh. You're too kind. [reaches for the I.O.U. card] I think this calls for a celebration. [pulls card from Kit's grasp, drops the French accent] Gentlemen, drinks are on me. [stands, addresses spectators] Welcome. Welcome to the Double Eagle. I'm Amanda, your new host. CUT

Dojo 0

(resume previous scene)

Kit - Not a day goes by I don't think about Amanda... [whirls around, hits wooden dummy with practice sword, breaking the sword] ...dead. God, Mac. It's so good seeing you.

DM - Oh, it's good seeing you, too.

Kit - Sorry about your stick. [hands broken sword to DM]

DM - Oh, no problem.

Kit - It's embarrassing for me. [leaves]

ACT TWO

Loft above dojo, next morning 0

CUT

<[DM is rattling around in the kitchen while Amanda sits at the bar reading a newspaper. He carries the coffee pot to the fridge, sets it inside. Amanda looks up from newspaper, watches as he takes carton of orange juice out of fridge, instead. He carries the orange juice over to the island where Amanda is sitting. Amanda gives him a look.]

DM - [looks down at the orange juice carton] Oh. Oh. Left the coffee in the fridge. [rescues the carafe from the fridge]> A

Amanda - Is there something wrong?

DM - Wrong? Why? What could be wrong?

Amanda - I dunno. You just seem a little distracted.

DM - Ohh. [kisses her cheek]

Amanda - If I didn't know any better, I'd say you were hiding something.

DM - [chuckles] What would I have to hide?

Amanda - Nothing. I'm sorry. I forgot who I was talking to. [sidles up beside him]

DM - Mm.

Amanda - You forgive me? Huh? [kisses him, both sense 'buzz' and pull apart] Expecting someone?

DM - Richie. Must be Richie. [thinks fast] You want to hear a lecture? [pulls Amanda away from the kitchen]

Amanda - What?

DM - At the university. I teach. Did I tell you I teach? [grabs her coat from the coat tree, helps her into it] They're doing St. Thomas Aquinas. Universals, the nature of truth... it's right up your alley. [grabs his own coat, pulls her toward side door]

Amanda - Uh, what's wrong with the elevator?

DM - Broken. I've been having trouble with it lately. [Elevator starts up.] Well, there you go. On, off. I'd better get it seen to.

Amanda - Forget Aquinas. I haven't seen Richie in ages.

DM - It's the same old Richie. Nothing's new. If we hurry we can still make it.

Amanda - I don't want to go to a lecture. I want to see who's coming up this elevator. [crosses her arms, not budging]

DM - [as RR lifts elevator grate] Richie! It's Richie.

RR - It's me. Hey, Amanda! How are you?

Amanda - Hi, Richie. I'm fine.

DM - It's great to see you, Rich.

RR - It's good to see you, too, Mac.

DM - Yeah. You look great.

RR - Oh, thanks. You, too.

DM - [to Amanda] Looks great, doesn't he?

Amanda - Yeah.

RR - [to DM] You look pretty good, too.

Conway Greens Racetrack 6

Kit - [watching horse being ridden past on track] Wow. Look at her fight. Oh, look at her fight all the way down. She's got spirit. She's got a late move. She's got heart, huh?

Rainey - She's a winner, Mr. O'Brady.

Kit - I knew it as soon as I heard her name... "Double Eagle." 7 Let's do the deal. I'm ready. Give me the paper. I'll sign it.

Rainey - There's just one problem.

Kit - Problem?

Rainey - I got an offer for one twenty.

Kit - But you told me sixty-five thousand dollars, I could have this horse. What are you doing to me here?

Rainey - What I said was I thought she'd sell in the neighborhood of sixty-five thousand. CUT Neighborhood changed.

Kit - Look, Lee. [grabs his lapel] Look, I've got to have this horse. [lets go] Excuse me. This horse is mine.

Rainey - Passion. That's good in a horseman. I like you, Kit. CUT Tell you what I'll do. You just match the offer -- the horse is yours. 8

Kit - Hundred and twenty.

Rainey - One twenty. [walks off]

Loft above dojo 0

DM - [answers kitchen phone] MacLeod.

Kit - [on phone] Hey, Mac. [into cell phone, at racetrack] It's Kit. Can you come meet me? I'm down at the track. 6

DM - [into phone] Uh... yeah, sure. Uh, at the university commons. [waves awkwardly at Amanda & RR, who are watching him]

Kit - [into phone] MacLeod, the racetrack. Conway Greens. Look, forget it. 6 [on phone] I'll come up there.

DM - [into phone, quietly] No, no, no, no. Don't do that. Uh, it won't be necessary. [louder] I'll be right there. [hangs up, sighs] Emergency.

Amanda - [to RR] Emergency? [RR shrugs.] What kind of an emergency can a school have?

DM - What? It happens. Listen, why don't you hang around with Richie for a while? I'm sure you guys have got a lot to talk about.

Amanda - With Richie?

DM - Well, why not? You haven't seen him in a long time. Listen, I'll be back as soon as I can. [sits her down in a chair, kisses her, pulls RR aside] Don't let her follow me.

RR - [as Amanda tries to eavesdrop] Where are you going? [as DM enters elevator] What's at the track?

DM - Never mind. Just keep her here. [leaves]

RR - So, um, Amanda! [Amanda smiles.] Amanda, what's new?

Amanda - It's funny you should ask, because that's exactly what I was going to ask you.

Conway Greens Racetrack 6

[Close on Double Eagle being ridden around track. 9 Longer shot of horse running along track.]

DM - [standing at fence, watching horse being ridden] Double Eagle? You've got to be kidding me.

Kit - Oh, this horse is meant for me. Look at the way she fights that lad. This is like fate, MacLeod.

DM - Yeah. It's coincidence. Nobody buys a horse on a name.

Kit - It's more than just that. This is a blue-chip investment. This is a two-year-old filly. You see the moves she made at the three-eighths pole?

DM - Yeah, I saw.

Kit - See this late kick?

DM - Yes. Is this why you brought me here?

Kit - No. Come on, MacLeod. You've always been an astounding judge of horse flesh, and I value your opinion.

DM - Yeah, well, my opinion is, she can run.

Kit - So you think it's a good deal?

DM - Well, if you're in the market for a racehorse, yeah.

Kit - Which we are. [DM reacts.] Come on, what's the matter. Go take a closer look at her. This won't take long. Come on, come on.

Amanda - Richard.

RR - Amanda.

Amanda - You look different. [circles him] I think it's your shoulders. They seem much bigger than the last time I saw you. [removes his jacket] Have you been working out?

RR - No, not especially.

Amanda - [caresses his shoulders] Ohh, I think you have, because they feel much, much bigger. Mm. You're very tight, though. [massages his shoulders] Does that feel good?

RR - Yeah, it does, actually.

Amanda - So what's she like?

RR - Who?

Amanda - The one that MacLeod's seeing.

RR - [shrugs her off] Come on, Amanda. Macleod is not seeing anyone.

Amanda - Well, then why did he go to church? [circles him again]

RR - He didn't go to church. He went to school. He's like some kind of visiting professor.

Amanda - Visiting who?

RR - [distracted] Where?

Amanda - At the airport? [continues to circle him, running her hands over him]

RR - It's not an airport. It's a school. It's like a university.

Amanda - [runs her hands through his hair] Mm. I really like your hair like this... Is she pretty?

RR - Who?

Amanda - The one MacLeod's seeing.

RR - No.

Amanda - She's ugly.

RR - Yes... No! Look, I told you, Amanda, he is not seeing anyone!

Amanda - Where?

RR - At the airport -- I mean the school. [Amanda kisses him.] I mean-- [pulls away] Look, Amanda, he's not seeing anyone.

Amanda - [still right against him] Where? At the airport?

RR - No, at the racetrack. I mean the school! Amanda!

Amanda - Thanks, Richie. You're the best. [kisses him, enters elevator]

RR - Amanda, please. He's going to kill me.

Amanda - I know. [closes grate] Bye-bye.

Kit - Ohh, this one's nice. MacLeod, come on. Have you ever seen a filly with such promise as this one?

DM - Well, she's got great conformation.

Kit - Great conformation.

DM - She's real clean. Straight-legged, not behind at the knee.

Kit - Yeah. She's perfect. This is my Double Eagle, MacLeod. I can feel it in my gut. If I can get this horse, I can end this hundred-and-seven-year losing streak I've been on since that bitch Amanda put me there.

DM - Oh, come on, Kit. You can't blame all your bad luck on Amanda.

Kit - Oh, no?

DM - No.

Kit - Okay, after... after she took my saloon from me, I won a ticket to Alaska in a crap game.

DM - Well, there. You see? You won a ticket.

Kit - The steamer sank off of Portland with all hands.

DM - Oh.

Kit - Okay. Tell me about bad luck, please.

DM - But, Kit, if you got to know her, you might even get to like her.

DM - Ama-- [Both sense 'buzz'. Kit enters, sneezes. He's been drinking.] Oh, Kit. I was worried about you.

Kit - No need to worry about me, my good friend, MacLeod. I've been very busy the last few days. I've had to put together all the money that I have, plus quite a lot that I didn't.

Amanda - Well, Kit, you are welcome to come here any time you want to gamble.

Kit - Gamble? What are you talking about, you stupid woman? I've come back to buy my casino back that you took from me!

Amanda - Then I'm afraid you've wasted your time, Mr. O'Brady, because it's not for sale.

Kit - What are you talking about? I've amassed a fortune in this case! What are you going to tell me this place is not for sale?

Amanda - I mean I like it, and it's not for sale.

Kit - [grabs her arm] You don't seem to understand. The Double Eagle is my place. I built it from nothing. The Double Eagle is my life!

Amanda - Well, it's my life now, and it's not for sale. And don't ever touch me again. [pulls her arm away]

DM - I'll talk to her, Kit. I'll talk to her.

Kit - No thieving French harlot with a coiffure is going to steal my place from me and get away with it!

Amanda - [backhands Kit, ends up hitting DM, too] I'm not French!

Kit - Yeah, but you cheated.

DM - No one cheated. [pointedly to Amanda] Did you.

Amanda - No!

DM - [to Kit] No!

Kit - Yeah, well, Kit O'Brady doesn't lose games like that in the Double Eagle with my coin there! [points behind him toward the bar]

Amanda - You know, it's funny, but I never liked that name -- the "Double Eagle". I've changed it... to the "Queen of Spades".

Kit - [turns, sees new 'Queen of Spades Casino' sign, walks toward bar] Winston, my good man.

Winston - Yes, sir.

Kit - Would you be so good as to retreive my coin from its place there?

Amanda - Winston. Uh, Winston. Winston, leave it.

Kit - Go ahead, Winston. It's all right.

Amanda - I said leave it.

Kit - Winston, please, give me the coin. Get it.

Amanda - Leave it.

Kit - Get it.

Amanda - Leave it!

DM - Amanda!

Amanda - I won this place lock, stock and barrel... coin included.

Kit - That is my lucky piece and I am not leaving without it!

Amanda - Would you please show this gentleman to the street?

DM - [as employee approaches] That will not be necessary.

Kit - It's my lucky piece.

DM - It's his lucky piece.

Amanda - Oh, boo-hoo.

Kit - That's it. MacLeod, thanks so very much for your effort. Winston, I don't know what to say to you.

Winston - Sorry, sir.

[Kit sniffs, walks stiffly out, escorted by the employee.]

DM - Amanda, why did you have to do that?

Amanda - He called me a cheat. Besides, he's going to be fine. [Outside the casino entrance, Kit falls down the stairs.] Eventually.

Kit - Burnt down the saloon? Are you crazy? I'd burn down the Double Eagle?

Amanda - Queen of Spades. And what was I supposed to think? You're such a lousy loser.

Kit - Excuse me?

DM - Amanda...

Amanda - What?!

DM - What do you mean, "What"?

Amanda - [quietly] Maybe I was wrong.

Kit - Did she just say something, MacLeod?

DM - Sorry, I -- I didn't quite hear that.

Amanda - [sighs] I guess I owe you an apology.

DM - [to Kit] There.

Kit - Oh, an apology, is it? Well, I'm very sorry to inform you that you owe me a hell of a lot more than an apology.

Amanda - Huh. Fine. [raises her sword]

Kit - Fine is right. [raises his sword]

DM - Kit, how much did the horse pay?

Kit - Twelve to one. My last five grand. Oh, it was brilliant.

DM - Twelve to one. Mm. Twelve to one, that's--

Kit - [realizing] I won! She won! Double Eagle won!

DM - Yeah!

Amanda - WE won!

DM - [wraps his arm around them both] Yeah!

TAG

Establishing shot: Dojo, night 5

Loft above dojo, night 0

Amanda - CUT What makes you such an expert on horses, anyway?

Kit - Dealing with you! 18 There's nothing wrong with this trainer. The trainer's the best.

Amanda - Then maybe it's the jockey.

DM - [from the couch] Maybe it's the owners. Guys, this is not working.

Kit - What do you suggest, we cut this horse in half?

DM - [stands up] Let's make it interesting. [goes to cabinet]

Kit - All right. [turns to face DM, looks down, back up as Amanda crosses her arms next to him.]

DM - [reaches into drawer, E pulls deck of cards out of drawer, fans them] High card takes it. [sets the deck on the table]

Kit - [stares at the deck a moment] No problem. [turns to Amanda] All right?

Amanda - [shrugs in agreement] Mm-hm.

Kit - All right. Ladies first.

Amanda - Just do it.

Kit - No ladies here, I guess. [rubs his hand together, raps his knuckles against the deck, lifts the top card and shows it - Jack of Diamonds]

Amanda - [rubs her hands together, picks up a card, looks at it, then looks at Kit and slaps the card down on the table in defeat] She's yours.

Kit - Oh! Oh, he's back! I don't believe it! I knew it! I knew it! [hugs DM] I'd come back here, I'd get it back! Oh, this is-- [goes past Amanda, stops] Uh, no hard feelings, right?

Amanda - I'm sure the both of you will be very happy together. [shakes his hand]

Kit - We will. Thank you. Thank you. I'd stay and chat, MacLeod, but I'm on a roll.

DM - See you, Kit.

Kit - [grabs his overcoat and cane, goes to the elevator] See you, MacLeod. See you at the Kentucky Derby. [closes elevator grate, starts elevator]

Amanda - [watches him go, shakes her head F] Look, I'm sorry. I don't know what I was doing. It's -- That's your money. Forgive me?

DM - [looks at her card - the Queen of Spades] What do you think? [kisses her]
