Eurominutes: The full version of this episode runs 48 minutes, but for the domestic (US) market, this was cut shorter for commercials. "Eurominutes" are those 4-5 minutes that European fans got to see but US fans missed out on when the episodes originally aired. (Subsequent reruns on USANetwork and SciFi/Syfy may or may not adhere to the original domestic cut.) Huge thanks to Gillian Horvath for providing the tape of the official domestic cut of this episode, as it was released by the studio for the US stations. TEASER
Establishing shot: Jewelry store exterior, stormy night Manager - <There are many facets to assessing a diamond, you understand? No pun intended.> CUT There is, naturally, color and size to take into consideration, but, uh, quality as well. For instance, this stone... four carats, only a very slight inclusion. Morgan - [takes diamond, examines it] Yeah. The finish is lousy. Its proportion sucks. It's got at least one extra facet. Major imperfections. It's crap. Did you cut this one yourself? Manager - Monsieur is in the diamond trade? Morgan - Monsieur does not trade. He collects. Do you see how beautiful she is? [strokes Angela's cheek] The diamond has to be at least as perfect, and I don't care how much it costs. <Manager - [sets flawed diamond down, retrieves large diamond from case in corner] They say it's part of the great Koh-I-Noor diamond. It was made for an English prince's daughter. CUT Morgan - [examines diamond] Around forty carats.> Is this the best you have? Manager - It's the best anyone has. Morgan - Do you fancy this one, love? Then I'll take it. Manager - Excellent. And, uh, how does monsieur choose to pay? Morgan - No, no, no, no. I said I'll take it. I didn't say anything about paying for it. [holds up Zippo lighter, flicks lighter wheel, releasing cloud of gas] I wouldn't bother with that alarm if I were you. It'll be over before you know it. CUT <Angela - What-- What are you doing, Morgan? [Nearby guard hits alarm.] Wait, this isn't how we planned it. Morgan - But I'm afraid this is the way it is. Angela - [as everyone collapses] Help me! I can't breath. Help me! I can't breathe! Morgan! Morgan - [puts gas mask on] Don't make a scene, love. It'll be over in a minute. [Angela collapses. Morgan starts taking jewelry from display shelves.]>

ACT ONE
[Camera pans down from statue to police car driving up.]
Policeman - {Arrivé}, Madame.
Translation: Arrivé - Come [Woman with dog crosses driveway, then 1 policeman waves police car through.]
DM - Would you mind telling me what it's about? Maybe I could help. [Cop he is following says nothing.] Hello... Hello? Are you like this with everybody, or is it just me? [Cop remains silent.] "Oh, I'm sorry for dragging you out of bed, Mr. MacLeod." "What, at five o'clock in the morning?" "Oh, but this is a matter of national security." "National security?" Come on, listen up. This is your part. [Cop opens office door.] Nice talking to you. Dufay - [sitting at desk as DM enters] Ah, Monsieur MacLeod. I'd like to thank you for your cooperation. DM - I was under the impression I didn't have any choice. Dufay - One always has a choice. DM - Mm-hmm. Dufay - But, uh, coming in voluntarily is so much more civilized than being put in handcuffs, don't you agree? DM - Oh, well, I'm all for civilization. Now I want to know why I'm here. Dufay - Maybe my colleague can explain it better. [Blonde woman by window turns to face them.] I believe you know Agent Delaney, from the American C.I.D.? DM - Yeah, we've come into contact once. Delaney - Briefly. It was a completely different matter. DM - Oh, Renee. If you wanted to talk, why didn't you come by the barge? Delaney - This is French police business, Mr. MacLeod. DM - Oh, please. You can call me Duncan. Delaney - Okay, Duncan. You can call me Agent Delaney. Dufay - And you can call me Inspector Dufay. Agent Delaney is here to assist us in a serious criminal matter, Monsieur MacLeod. We hoped you'd be able to assist us as well. Delaney - There's been a series of robberies in the Paris area. Dufay - And murders. Delaney - And they fit a pattern I've investigated before. DM - Really. Am I a suspect? Delaney - Not at this point.
DM - Well, that's really, uh, gratifying to hear. Maybe you just brought me in for moral support. Delaney - Having an attitude won't make this any easier. 2 In going through the files on the suspect, your name kept coming up, too. We were hoping you could help tell us something about him. DM - That depends. Who'd you have in mind? Delaney - His name is Xavier St. Cloud.
Inside jewelry store [Close-up of Xavier St. Cloud.] [Super:
(resume previous scene) Delaney - Suspect's male. He has very expensive taste... DM - Good. That sort of narrows down half the population of Paris. Delaney - He has a passion for rare jewelry.
Inside jewelry store [Store clerk (Nathalie) shows Xavier a necklace.]
(resume previous scene) Delaney - And he kills to get it, and he uses gas. I'd say that narrows it down quite a bit.
Inside jewelry store [Xavier tosses metal cylinder onto the carpet. The cylinder begins emitting thick yellow smoke & flames. Nathalie falls to the floor.]
(resume previous scene) DM - Sorry. I can't tell you anything. Delaney - Two days ago he hit a jewelry store, and three people are dead. Still nothing to tell us? DM - I'm sorry. I can't help. Now is there anything else? [Delaney & Dufay exchange a look.] Good. Then I'll be going. Inspector Dufay. Agent Delaney, it's been so nice seeing you again. [leaves]
Delaney - Duncan! Duncan, wait. It wasn't me who dragged you down here, it was Dufay. I did my best to keep you out of it. DM - Then I guess my thanks are in order. I have nothing to hide. Delaney - Right. The last time I was chasing St. Cloud, you were right in the middle of it. Look, I know you're one of the good guys. Just give me a hand here. You know I wouldn't screw you. I-- I didn't mean-- I-- Not that I-- DM - I-- Delaney - [sighs] I do this around you. DM - It's okay. Delaney - Just give me something. DM - You're after the wrong guy. Delaney - How do you know? DM - Xavier St. Cloud is dead. [walks away] Delaney - [runs after him] What? Wait, you can't just walk away after dropping a bomb on me like that. What makes you so sure? DM - I've got a reliable source.
Barge - on deck, night [Swordfight between Xavier & DM.]
Xavier's house, night [Swordfight between Xavier & DM, inside Xavier's house. DM ducks as Xavier's sword hits a sculpture, creating sparks. DM blocks a parry and grabs Xavier's other arm, grappling with him. He pushes Xavier away. Xavier re-engages, cuts DM's arm, then kicks him. Cut to fight outside, as Xavier runs at DM. 3 DM deflects Xavier's charge, beheads him.]
(resume previous scene) DM - Whoever's out there, it's not Xavier St. Cloud. Delaney - That's it? That's all you're going to tell me? DM - Renee, I'll see you around. Delaney - I'm sorry about the cold shoulder. I figured you wouldn't want the cops knowing about us. DM - Knowing about what? Delaney - What happened between us. DM - Not much, as I seem to remember.
Parking lot Delaney - Would you, you know, do the guy thing?
DM - 'Do the guy thing'?
Delaney - Yeah. Help my engine.
DM - What seems to be the problem?
Delaney - Three thousand pounds of ugly tin just doesn't like me.
DM - Let's take a look. 4
Delaney's apartment Delaney - [enters apartment] Now, I want you to know, ordinarily, I don't let strange men in my apartment. DM - [enters, moves past her] Unless you trust them? Delaney - No. [pulls out gun, cocks it] Unless I have a gun.
(resume previous scene) Delaney - Well, I want to make it clear -- whatever it was, it's over. DM - Ah, if you say so. Delaney - I'm engaged. DM - Really? Delaney - His name's Paul. He's a lawyer in Washington. He's even thinking of running for Congress. DM - [teasing] I thought you took an oath to fight crime. Delaney - Duncan, be serious. I don't want this to-- I don't want us to be enemies. Say something. DM - [kisses her cheek] Congratulations. [leaves] <Quay by barge CUT [DM senses 'buzz', sees Immortal in hat and overcoat, chases him down the quay. The Immortal ducks through a door near the bridge. DM follows, and in a crazy tv-magic twist, is suddenly standing at the edge of a doorway high in the wall of a large warehouse. Seriously. Somehow there is now a giant, empty, multi-story warehouse INSIDE the bank of the Seine at the Pont de la Tournelle. The mystery Immortal is perched on a ledge beside the door (or possibly hanging onto the open door; it's hard to tell.) In an effort not to fall the long distance to the warehouse floor, DM grabs a pipe attached to the wall by the doorway. It bends under his weight, dangling him above the warehouse floor.] DM - [recognizing the mystery Immortal] Ah, Morgan d'Estaing. Nice to see you again. [loses his grip on the pipe, falls to the floor] Morgan - Duncan. So nice of you to drop in. [DM draws his sword. Morgan grabs a chain and swings across the warehouse. DM goes after him. They fight. Morgan throws a lighter/gas cannister on the ground.] Come on, MacLeod. [Morgan is now wearing a gas mask, throws a second lighter/gas cannister on the ground.] {How's that?} It's a little bit smoky, isn't it, MacLeod? [as DM tries to get away from the gas] Come on. I've got you now. I'm gonna rip your head off. I'm getting nearer. I'm getting nearer. Come on! [DM grabs a chain, swings across warehouse and through a window, suddenly rolling out onto the quay under Pont de la Tournelle.] Man - Monsieur, are you hurt? DM - I'm okay. I had a smashing time. [groans, gets to his feet] Remember, don't try this at home.>

ACT TWO
DM - Nice place you have here. Delaney - Thanks. Government housing. I'm out as soon as the next Congressional junket arrives. So, is this a social call? DM - It's about your case. Delaney - I thought you couldn't help us. DM - Changed my mind. Delaney - Why? Did you take a walk and meet a good Samaritan? DM - Something like that. I want to see your files on Xavier St. Cloud. Delaney - The dead guy? DM - Well, we've got to start somewhere. Delaney - [hands him a file] This is what we have. St. Cloud's wanted for unsolved cases all over Europe. The police couldn't get close to him. Came and went like a ghost. DM - Until two years ago. Delaney - That's not in the files. DM - Well, word gets around. Delaney - Obviously. They figured he was on some tropic island, sipping pina coladas. My guess was our boy came out of retirement. <DM - Except this is not our guy. CUT Delaney - He's got the same targets, same M.O. They even found some of the same gas in the victims' bodies. Who else could it be? Duncan, I-- My gut tells me there's something happening here-- DM - Like what? Delaney - I just want to be very clear.> If we do this together, it's strictly professional?
Park [DM & Delaney kiss.]
(resume previous scene) DM - Strictly. Look, I want you to, uh, check on another file for me. Delaney - You have a name? DM - Yeah. Morgan d'Estaing. Flashback - French countryside, 1803 - d'Estaing chateau - parlor CUT Philippe - A toast! Charlotte - Yes! A toast, everybody. Man - [offscreen, as Morgan enters] Ah, Morgan. [Super: France 1803] Morgan - What's the occasion? The war with the British isn't going well. Have I, uh, have I forgotten a birthday or something? [re his outfit] I was out riding the estate. I should change. [off everyone's silence] What is it? What's wrong? Charlotte - Philippe, tell him. Philippe - Things have changed, Morgan. <[to girl at piano] Emily, play, please. Play. [Emily starts to play Chopin's "Valse brillante" (Op. 34 No. 2.)]> CUT When we thought we'd remain childless, we adopted you to carry our ancient family name. To carry on the d'Estaing line. Morgan - But I know all this. You've never kept it secret. Philippe - Then Bernard was born. Morgan - And I had brother. How does that change anything? Philippe - It changes everything. It means you're not to inherit the d'Estaing estate or the title. All that will go to Bernard. Of course, you will get a monthly allowance. Morgan - An allowance? But it's mine. By rights, it should go to me! I'm the oldest son! Bernard - Adopted son. [Emily stops playing.] Morgan - I'm a d'Estaing! I'm -- I'm one of you! Philippe - In name only. Bernard is a true d'Estaing. Morgan - I loved you as a son. Your son! Philippe - Try to understand. You'll have a place here... but Bernard will be master of the estate. It can be no other way. [Morgan throws champagne glass to the floor, leaves.]
Establishing shot: full moon
Flashback - d'Estaing chateau, 1803 - Bernard's bedroom, night [Morgan looks out window, then walks slowly over to bed. 5 Bernard is asleep in the bed.] Morgan - [leans over sleeping Bernard] I'm sorry. Sleep, little brother. Sleep. [plunges pillow over Bernard's face, smothering him] [Nearby, Philippe exits room, walks down dark hallway.]
Bernard - [offscreen, muffled] Help me!
Bernard - [offscreen, muffled] Help me! Help! Philippe - [bursts into Bernard's room] No! Bernard! No! [grabs at Morgan] Morgan, get off of him! Let him go! [Morgan pushes him away. He falls against a desk, grabs small knife.] Monster. [stabs Morgan in the back]
Establishing shot: inside d'Estaing family crypt
Flashback - d'Estaing chateau, 1803 - outside family crypt [Xavier rides up, senses 'buzz', enters crypt, slides lid of coffin open.] Xavier - Well, look what we have here. A new boy. [sets coffin lid aside. Morgan gasps awake, reacts to being in a coffin.] Want to stay? [holds out a hand. Morgan takes it.] I didn't think so. Morgan - [sits up] They tried to kill me. I was their son. I loved them, and they buried me alive. Xavier - [chuckles] Even they wouldn't try that. Believe me, you were quite dead when they put you in this casket. Morgan - You're insane. Xavier - You'll understand it all, in time. Come. We have much to talk about. Morgan - They're going to pay for what they did to me. All of them.
(resume previous scene) [DM closes St. Cloud file.]
Establishing shots: Seine, night [1. Boat with green lights passes behind bridge. <DM - [joins Delaney at prow of boat] Pretty, isn't it? Delaney - Ah, it's beautiful. DM - You've changed a bit. Delaney - You noticed. DM - Mm, yeah. Yeah. Cut your hair. Delaney - Cut my hair. DM - Nice new clothes. Delaney - Try, yeah. DM - Styling these days. Delaney - It's hard on a government salary, but-- [Both laugh.] They don't have this in Washington. DM - Yeah, Paris is a beautiful city. Delaney - God, this was a great idea, Duncan. DM - So how long are you going to stay? Delaney - Mm, depends. DM - On what? Xavier? [Boat floats past camera.] Delaney - [voice-over] How long it takes to solve the case. 7
Establishing shot: Building on bank of Seine with blue lights
Delaney - [sitting with DM at table] I haven't eaten on a boat since I was a child. This is a great idea, Duncan. DM - Yeah, well, there's more to life than just work. [Defay enters restaurant.] What's this? Delaney - Well, I work with him, you work with me.> CUT We're all in this together, right? DM - One big happy family. Delaney - Yeah. DM - Right. Dufay - May I join you? [sits] DM - Looks like you already have. Dufay - We are running a check on d'Estaing. I've never heard of him, but if he has a record, we'll find it. Delaney - Provided he isn't dead. [DM senses 'buzz'. Morgan enters restaurant.] Morgan - MacLeod! It's good to see you again. DM - It's been a while. Morgan - You didn't call. You didn't come by. I've missed you. <Morgan - But, uh, I see you've been busy. CUT Delaney - Duncan? Are you going to introduce your friend?> DM - No. I don't think he really has time. We've got something to discuss. [to Morgan] Now. Morgan - I'll be seeing you again. DM - Yeah. It won't take long. Be back real soon. [escorts Morgan out of restaurant, back to prow of boat] So first the jewelry store, then the warehouse. Who're you going after next? Morgan - Xavier taught me well. In fact, he taught me everything I know.
Establishing shot: d'Estaing chateau, 1806 Flashback - d'Estaing chateau - parlor <Philippe - The English will be here any minute. The war's at our doorstep. We must hurry. Emily, fetch your mother. Bernard - [offscreen] Papa! Philippe - My God. [Morgan is in the parlor, holding knife to Bernard's throat.] Am I seeing a ghost? This is not possible. Emily - Mama! [Charlotte goes to her.] Morgan - Hello, Father. Hello, Emily.> Philippe - It can't be you. You're dead. Morgan - And this is all a nightmare that will end when you die. Xavier - Wait. Gently, Morgan. You'll have what's coming to you. Philippe - Who are you? Xavier - Xavier St. Cloud. Think of me as a friend of the family. Please, sit down. [Charlotte, Bernard & Emily all sit.] The d'Estaing family took centuries to acquire land, titles and wealth. But the revolution took your titles. Napoleon took your land, and the English army is about to take your wealth. CUT Philippe - There is nothing left. Xavier - [scoffs] I doubt that. You've never been known as a careless man. Would you flee your estate penniless and unprotected? A stash of jewelry, perhaps? Silver? Philippe - I told you there is nothing. Morgan - We're wasting time. Why not cut their throats and have done with it? [Close on Emily.]
Xavier - [smiles] You're going to be around a long time, Morgan. You have to learn patience. CUT
Philippe - This is monstrous! Barbaric!
Morgan - You're one to talk.
Xavier - [holding hot poker] I've spent a lifetime studying pain. How it travels along the nerves, to the brain. Of course, certain areas contain more nerves than others... the hand... the tongue... Well, you can imagine the possibilities.
Philippe - I'm prepared to suffer. Xavier - Perhaps. But what about them? [holds poker near Charlotte's face. Morgan walks over to Philippe, holds knife at his throat.] 8 <What do you say, Baron? Give me the money and you and your family can be on your way, or wait here for the English to march in.> CUT Bernard - Tell him, Papa. Tell him! Philippe - If you promise to let my family live. Xavier - You have my word. Philippe - In the cabinet... behind the bottles. [Morgan goes to cabinet, retrieves small chest.] Take it and go. You've given your word. Xavier - [pours glasses of wine] Then let us drink on it, as gentlemen. Philippe - Anything to get that monster out of our lives forever. Xavier - [holds up wineglass] Cheers. [It looks like Philippe, Charlotte, and Xavier drink. The others just hold their glasses. Xavier sets his glass down.] Come, Morgan. Morgan - But we haven't finished. Xavier - Morgan, come. Morgan - [glares at Xavier a beat, then sets wineglass down and leads him out of parlor 9 into hallway] Ah! We were supposed to kill them! All of them! Xavier - Calm yourself. A few moments and they'll be silent forever. Morgan - The wine. You put poison in their wine. Xavier - Never bloody your hands unless you must. Thus endeth the first lesson. Morgan - [smiles, then looks back at parlor] But you gave him your word.
Xavier - I gave YOU my word. And it's not whether you give your word. It's who you give it to. [starts walking down hallway]
Morgan - Perhaps one day you'll betray me.
Xavier - And that will be the second lesson.
Flashback - d'Estaing chateau, 1806 - courtyard DM - [in uniform, rides in with other soldiers] This way, men. Secure the grounds. 10 [to his horse] Whoa. [to nearby soldier] Come. Soldier, take him. [DM dismounts. Soldier leads horse away.] We'll put the colonel's office in the house. <The men's tents can go in the yard. CUT Hastings - Yes, sir. DM - See if the owners are in the house.> Ask them to surrender the property. [senses 'buzz', sees Xavier & Morgan exiting house] Xavier. Xavier - MacLeod. I'm touched you remembered. DM - One could hardly forget those that kill their friends. It's a shame we're not alone. You'd be dead by now. Xavier - Wars can be so troublesome, can't they? On the other hand, they can be quite convenient. DM - Aye, for those who want to make a profit by them. Is that why you're here? Xavier - Perhaps you'll think me sentimental, but I couldn't bear to think of the treasures of France in the hands of the English. DM - So you decided to liberate them. Xavier - On the contrary. This is Morgan d'Estaing, the only remaining heir. My protégé. Hastings - [hurries over] Lieutenant MacLeod, we found the family, sir. All dead. It must have been suicide when they heard us coming. Xavier - A tragedy, really. Now, if you'll excuse us, my friend needs to grieve. Come, Morgan. DM - We'll see each other again. Xavier - Yes. We'll look forward to it. [They leave.]

ACT THREE
(Official domestic cut tape starts here.)
(resume previous scene) Morgan - Tell me, did you think it was him back there? Do you feel his presence now? I do. Did you think he was a zombie back from the dead? Do you feel the hate? DM - You know, it's funny, Morgan. There's a difference between hate and fear. I hated Xavier. You're just a cheap imitation. Morgan - I'm not an imitation, MacLeod. I'm a homage. DM - Mm. Morgan - A tribute to a great artist. DM - Yeah. Morgan - One you killed.
[meanwhile, inside restaurant] Waiter - [approaches Delaney's table carrying a bottle of wine] Excuse me, sir. A present from the gentleman. Dufay - Chateau d'Estaing? Ah, wonderful. [to Delaney, as waiter pours wine] Your friend is unusually generous. Delaney - He's definitely unusual. Dufay - [swirls the wine, sips] Mm. [to waiter] Perfect. Thank you.
[meanwhile, on deck of boat] DM - Xavier got what he deserved. Morgan - Maybe you're right. Maybe we all get what we deserve.
[meanwhile, inside restaurant] [Waiter pours wine for Delaney.] Delaney - That's impressive.
[meanwhile, on deck of boat] Morgan - [looking toward restaurant] Fair's fair. DM - [runs back into restaurant] No! Put it down! Put it down! Stop! Delaney - What? DM - Put the glass down! [overturns their table, knocking the wine glasses out of their hands] Dufay - Please, monsieur! Delaney - What the hell are you doing? DM - Tell the captain to get an ambulance! Is there a doctor onboard? [Dufay gasps, chokes, collapses.] Is anyone a doctor? Delaney - He's dead. Inside police station - Dufay's office Delaney - But how did you know about the wine? DM - Xavier didn't like to kill face to face. He used poison, gas, bombs. It's his trademark. Delaney - But Xavier's dead. DM - Morgan worked with Xavier. Delaney - That was the guy at the restaurant, was Morgan? Why didn't you say anything? What kind of game are you playing here, MacLeod? [An officer enters, hands Delaney a file folder.] Delaney - Merci. [Officer sets Chateau d'Estaing winebottle on desk, then leaves again.] Delaney - [looks at file] No prints. He injected the poison through the cork. A curare derivative. No known antidote. Well, this guy knew what he was doing. DM - He had a good teacher. Delaney - Yeah, he also went to a lot of trouble. This wine was worth a fortune. DM - Trace the bottle. Delaney - According to this report, this wine hasn't been available for decades. It shouldn't even exist. <DM - CUT Well, try the wine cellars.> Delaney - In France? There's thousands. It'd be easier to trace a handgun in L.A. DM - Yeah. CUT Delaney - Any ideas? DM - I'll let you know. [leaves]
[DM drives up to chateau, parks by Morgan's sports car, enters chateau, closing door behind him. He walks through tiled entry, senses 'buzz'. * He walks through darkened parlor. The lights come on, revealing Morgan waiting for him.] DM - Got any more tricks? Morgan - You don't waste time. DM - Ah, should've used another wine. Morgan - But then you wouldn't know where to find me. DM - Why bring mortals into this? Why kill the inspector? Morgan - Because I could. DM - You're just like Xavier. Morgan - He was a prince, and he treated me like one. DM - And his gift to you was murder. Morgan - [draws sword] Justice. On a family that used me... then betrayed me when I was no longer useful. Xavier gave me my revenge. Now I'm going to give him his. [They fight, but are interrupted by sirens as police arrive outside.] It seems your cavalry has arrived, MacLeod. Another time. Delaney - [at chateau entrance with a gun] Freeze.

ACT FOUR
Delaney - [to DM] Well, there's enough evidence to link d'Estaing to the robberies. Let's hope there's some rare bottles of wine like the one he used to kill the inspector. Morgan - [being led out in hancuffs by a detective] I hope the inspector appreciated it. Delaney - Scumbag. DM - That's all right. He's a problem for the French police now. Morgan - But not for long, MacLeod. [to Delaney] Soon I'll be somebody else's problem. Delaney - I don't think so. [to detective] Get him out of here. {Vaton.} Morgan - She's quite something, you know. Young, fiery, intense... But oh, so temporary. DM - She's nothing to me. Morgan - Oh, spare me. You know the minute you two are alone, she'll be over you like a bitch in heat. Delaney - Come here-- [lunges at Morgan] Morgan - Whoa. [chuckles] Delaney - [to DM, as Morgan is put into police car & driven away] Sorry. Who does that murdering bastard think he is? Where'd he get that stuff about us? DM - You followed me. Delaney - Like I had a choice. My intuition said you had a lead, and you weren't sharing. Turns out I was right. DM - Yeah, but we agreed to trust each other. Delaney - Yeah, we agreed to work together. How'd you know where to find him? DM - Intuition. Delaney - It's not good enough, MacLeod. DM - Listen, you be careful of d'Estaing. He can be very dangerous. Delaney - Oh, we can handle him. Look, there's a few more questions I'd like to ask you. [DM chuckles, walks away.] Oh, Duncan. Oh, don't make me pull rank here, Duncan. I'm a cop. I could have you brought in again! DM - Mm. [gets in car]
Establishing shot: Outside police station, evening
Delaney - [as guard unlocks door to jail cells] You don't have the death penalty here, do you? Detective - Not since 1981, Agent Delaney. Delaney - That's too bad. I could pull the switch on this creep myself. Has he got a lawyer yet? Detective - He didn't want one. Delaney - That's weird. [They reach Morgan's cell, see him hanging.] Oh, no! Quick! [They cut him down.] Get a doctor! [Guard rushes off.] You don't get off that easy! [starts CPR] Live! Live, dammit! Detective - He's dead. Delaney - [stops CPR] I guess he didn't need a lawyer after all.
Near Delaney's apartment, night Delaney - Somebody stole him from the morgue. DM - Well, maybe nobody stole him. Maybe he just got up and walked away. Delaney - Very funny. Somebody had to be in it with him. But why? What good is a dead body? DM - What do you think? Delaney - I don't want to think about it anymore. Whatever happened, it's over. Morgan's dead and I'm off the case. This is it. Thanks for walking me home. DM - Oh, no problem. You sure you're going to be okay? Delaney - Yeah. Duncan, now that this is over, I don't think we should see each other anymore. Delaney - Yeah. I'm sure. <[He leans in. They kiss. He senses 'buzz' & pulls away.] Yeah. CUT DM - Uh, I think I should probably come up.> Delaney - I don't think it's a good idea. DM - Just to talk. I mean, uh, honest. [raises two fingers awkwardly to his forehead] Scout's honor.
Delaney - [enters apartment with DM] Um... [takes off coat]
DM - Here, let me-- [helps Delaney with coat] --give you a hand.
Delaney - You want something to drink?
DM - Um-- * Delaney - I have some wine, or-- Actually, forget the wine. I've kind of gone off wine lately. DM - Coffee's fine. Delaney - Okay. I'll put some on. [starts out of room, turns back] Coffee, I mean. [from kitchen] Won't be long now. [re-enters room with tray] As soon as I hand in my report, that's it. Back to the States. DM - Well, it must be hard, being away from someone you care about. [Delaney stares at him blankly.] Oh, Paul. The guy you're going to marry? Delaney - [exhales in relief] Paul. Yes. I thought... Absolutely. Well, you'd like him. He's, you know, a normal guy... Not that you're not normal, I mean. DM - I know what you mean. Delaney - He's steady. Nine-to-five, no secrets, no danger... Just what I need. [pours coffee] DM - Well, I hope you'll be very happy together, okay? [accidentally knocks coffee cup in her hand, spilling it on her outfit] Delaney - Um, I'm going to get this coffee-- Excuse me. [goes to her bedroom, starts taking off blouse] Duncan? You think there was anything to what Morgan said? About you and me and how it was so obvious? You think he's crazy? DM - [still in sitting room, pours himself a cup of coffee] About some things. Delaney - [from bedroom] When we kissed, did-- Did you feel anything, like your spine melting or something? [In sitting room, DM senses 'buzz'.] Duncan, I--I have this thing for you. It's--It's-- It's chemical, I think. And I spent the last few nights trying to think of a hundred reasons why we shouldn't go to bed, but if we don't, I'll never have any closure. And I'll spend the rest of my life wondering what I missed. I can't do that to Paul. It wouldn't be fair to him. [puts slinky black dress on, comes out of bedroom] Duncan? [DM is gone.]
Roof of Delaney's apartment building, night Morgan - [as DM exits stairwell] Hello, MacLeod. How could I just walk away, eh? Now just so you don't worry, after I kill you, I'll take good care of her. <She'll remember Morgan d'Estaing as long as she lives. [They face off against each other.] CUT DM - Silly boy. [They fight. DM overbalances on a lunge, barely dodges Morgan's swing.] Morgan - Ah, did you slip, Duncan? [Fight continues. Morgan pushes DM against railing at edge of roof.] DM - There. [swings them around so Morgan is against the railing] There we go. Your turn. [Morgan twists away. Fight continues.] Morgan - Nearly. [examines sword after a particularly vicious cut] You've dented my blade. DM - Got anymore tricks? [Fight continues. DM disarms Morgan. Morgan pulls out a short knife, throws it at DM. DM pulls it out of his shoulder.] That's not going to do you very much good, boy. Morgan - There's a curare on the tip. That's poison, MacLeod.> You've only got thirty seconds. [recovers his sword] Come on! DM - That's fifteen more than I need. <Morgan - You're going down. Here it comes, Macleod. Can you feel the life draining out of you? Can you? DM - Why don't you--> CUT [moves suddenly, catching Morgan off guard, slicing him across the belly, then beheads him & falls down, temporarily 'dead', as Quickening begins]
[short time later] [DM gasps awake.]

TAG
DM - [as Delaney walks toward barge] Looks like you're going somewhere. Delaney - Washington. Paul's decided to run for Congress, so we moved up the date of the wedding. DM - My congratulations. Um, look, about last night... Delaney - No, no, no, no. Don't-- Don't explain. If you'd stayed, it might have been a big mistake. You could have taken advantage of the situation, but you didn't. You were a gentleman. Thank you. <Delaney - Can you imagine me a politician's wife? DM - [pretends to ponder] Mm...> CUT Delaney - Well, wish me luck? Kiss me goodbye? DM - Good luck. [kisses her cheek] Delaney - [starts to turn away, turns back] Oh, hell. [grabs DM, kisses him soundly. They overbalance--] DM - Whoa-a-ah! Delaney - [at same time] Oh, Duncan! [--and fall into the Seine.] |
