Behind the Scenes/Bonus Clips

(from 2004 U.S./Canada DVD set)

4x01: Homeland

~Filming the Transition~

Gillian Horvath - The transition in and out of flashback is a bit of a Highlander trademark. During pre-production, there would be a special meeting with the director, editors, and producer to design those shots. In this case, all that was needed was a shot of the bracelet falling at Duncan's feet.

Flashback - Cliff near Glenfinnan, 1618

Gillian Horvath - [voice-over] Notice that our director and star does these insert shots himself rather than sending in a pair of stunt feet.

[Adrian Paul repeatedly drops bracelet on the ground for the camera.]

Field near Glenfinnan

Gillian Horvath - [voice-over] The other half of the transition is Duncan picking up the bracelet in the present.

[DM picks up bracelet, walks past camera.]

Man - [offscreen] Move away.

Gillian Horvath - Unfortunately, the shots of the bracelet falling that were originally filmed just weren't dramatic enough.

Flashback - Cliff near Glenfinnan, 1618

Gillian Horvath - [voice-over] So, a week later, during the filming of "Brothers in Arms", our supervising editor, Don Paonessa took a camera out behind the studio with the bracelet on the end of a fishing line.

[Bracelet spins slowly as it is lowered to the ground by the fishing line, Then several takes of the bracelet landing on the ground without the line.]

Gillian Horvath - And another week later, during filming of "The Innocent", the crew were still picking up pieces of the now all-consuming bracelet sequence.

Flashback - Cliff near Glenfinnan, 1618

Gillian Horvath - [voice-over] If you check the final episode, you'll see that there are pieces of all of these days in the final edit.

[Slow motion shot of bracelet landing on the ground.]

~Deleted Scene:
D...E...B...R...A...~

Gillian Horvath - It had been well-established on the series that Duncan McLeod didn't learn to read and write until 1637, a hundred years after this flashback. So for this deleted scene where the young Duncan is writing Debra Campbell's name on her grave marker--

EXT. FIELD NEAR TREES - GLENFINNAN - 1618 - DAY

Gillian Horvath - [voice-over] --he is holding a piece of paper in one hand, from which he is presumably copying the letters of her name.

Director - [offscreen] And... Action.

[The headstone and a freshly filled grave. DM looks at piece of paper with Debra's name on it, then picks up hammer and chisel and begins to tap on the headstone.]

~Raven Wrangling~

Gillian Horvath - The ravens add a unique touch to this episode, and a unique challenge in filming.

Somewhere outside

Gillian Horvath - [voice-over] Notice the fishing line on the end of his leg.

[Handler opens door of dog kennel sitting atop a ladder. Eventually the raven comes out and flies a short distance across the sky.]

~Bug City~

Gillian Horvath - The Scottish exteriors in this episode were filmed partly on location in Scotland, partly in Vancouver. You can tell them apart in the episode because Scotland filmed in March is chilly and brown, whereas Vancouver filmed in June is warm and green and lush, and so filled with bugs that the crew was wearing mosquito nets.

Field near Glenfinnan

Gillian Horvath - [voice-over] The cast didn't have that luxury...

[Adrian waves the bugs away from Jim's face, then pretends to slap him instead.]

Woman - [offscreen] Sorry, Jim. They do like you.

Director - [offscreen] And...

Director - [offscreen] Frame. And, Adrian...

DM - I thought the pain would kill me. I didn't realize I was an Immortal yet.

Joe - The bracelet?

DM - I laid it in her grave, so part of me would be with her forever. Then it turned up in Paris.

Joe - So, now you're returning.

DM - Well, it's not that easy, Joe. The Church ruled it a suicide. I had to bury her in unconsecrated ground somewhere out there.

Joe - You can't find it.

DM - It's been almost four hundred years. Everything's changed. The hills are bare, all the forests are gone... Nothing's the same.

Joe - There's got to be something you'd recognize. I mean, something that hasn't changed.

DM - Just one. [goes to mount horse. Horse moves a bit.] Stop.

Director - [offscreen] And cut.

Adrian - I don't want to get up just in case he moves.

~Filming the Swordfight~

Field near Glenfinnan, night

Adrian - [offscreen] Action!

[Camera on Kanwulf as they fight. DM disarms Kanwulf & knocks him back.]

Adrian - [offscreen] How was that hit? {Come from the hit.} Pick them up. Pick them up.

Carsten Norgaard - [offscreen] Now we're doing you?

Adrian - [offscreen] Yes.

[Camera on DM now.]

Adrian - [re: ring of fire] Can you bring this up? Heat this up?

Man - [offscreen] {??} The fire?

Adrian - Picking it up? [moves so bigger flames are visible over his shoulder] There. Go that way, go that way. [motions Carsten to his other side] Ready? You're on the right side. [re Carsten's sword] Be careful with that. When you bring it back, bring it right back, okay? Ready? And... [starts fight, disarms Kanwulf] Come on! [throws some hits at Kanwulf] Other side. Go back again. Do it again. [hands sword back to Carsten] Pick it up. Do it again. {??} have to hit the other side, okay? And step back with it. Alright, ready! And... pull it! [starts fight again, disarms Kanwulf, knocks him back with sword pommel] Come back. Come back. Just do the hit. Stay right there. Ready? And... [knocks Kanwulf back with pommel of sword] Come back. Do the hit. Come back. {Your last one there.} Ready? Fall on your knees. [knocks Kanwulf back with pommel of sword] Cut.

Chorus of voices - [offscreen] {No flames!}

Adrian - [offscreen] No {??} Don't cut.

4x02: Brothers in Arms

~Deleted Scene:
Cord and Joe~

INT. JOE'S - NIGHT

Director - [offscreen] And... frame. Action.

Cord - [offscreen] Joe, send him to the warehouse.

Joe - [offscreen] I'm not sending him to that god-damned warehouse.

Cord - [offscreen] God damn it, just do what I'm telling you to do!

Joe - [offscreen] I am not your boy, Sergeant!

Cord - He's going to come here looking for me. You just send him where I told you!

Joe - What the hell do you mean he's going to come looking for you?

Cord - God damn it! [knocks things off bar counter] I told you! I want him on my turf! I want him now!

Joe - Forget it! It is not gonna happen.

Cord - I think he'll insist. [laughs, leaves]

Director - [offscreen] We're cutting it.

4x03: The Innocent

~Filming the Swordfight~

Gillian Horvath - Choreographing the swinging rope fight provided a special challenge. Notice how our star Adrian Paul protects his co-star from injury.

Switching yard - building

Director - [offscreen] And...

Adrian - Wait a minute, wait. Let it swing. Let it swing once. When it goes back, get into position... Ready? Let it go, John. [John lets go of pulley hook, which swings toward actors & camera.] Second time, when it comes back, okay? Ready. [steps in front of hook as it swings away] And... Now. [starts swordfight, "stabs" King, who collapses backward] [in a tiny voice:] Mind your head. [a beat] Get up, Callum. Callum, get up, get up, get up. [Callum gets back up.]

Director - [offscreen] Cut. Alright.

Switching yard - building

Director - [offscreen] And action!

[Camera is off to the side as Adrian, standing on the hook, swings back and forth, exchanging blows with King when he is able to.]

Adrian - [when the pulley runs out of swing] Bring it back.

Director - [offscreen] Hold it, don't cut.

Man 2 - [offscreen] Still rolling.

Director - [offscreen] Are we doing the jump now?

Adrian - Forward momentum.

Director - [offscreen] Are we going to do the jump now? Are you ready? Stand by.

Man 3 - [offscreen] You want a bigger swing, Adrian?

Adrian - Do you want a bigger swing, Dennis?

Director - [offscreen] A bigger swing? No.

Man 3 - [offscreen] Do a couple of the bigger swings.

Director - [offscreen] Are we doing the swing or the jump?

Adrian & Man - [offscreen, together] Swing.

Director - [offscreen] Okay. only the swing. Ready?

Adrian - [starts to lose his balance] Oh shit. Could you sort of balance on this thing?

Director - [offscreen] Adrian, put your face on the other side? Is that possible? Ready, and... a bigger swing. Stand by. Action!

[Adrian swings toward King a few times, exchanging blows when he can, then loses his balance & jumps off the hook.]

Adrian - Whoa!

Director - [offscreen] Cut.

Adrian - [offscreen] {Well played, back to the win.}

Switching yard - building

Man with clapboard - [offscreen] And take one, A-mark. [snaps clapboard]

Woman - [offscreen] B-mark?

Director - [offscreen] And action!

[Same take as previous, different (closer) camera angle - DM is swinging toward the camera now.]

[Dialogue is the same as above. When Dennis Berry asks if Adrian can put his face on the other side, Adrian can now be seen switching which side of the cable he is leaning against, although he switches back when the cable starts swinging and he has to wield his sword. When he jumps off the hook, he ends up with his face right in the camera.]

Switching yard - building

Man with clapboard - [offscreen] Pick up A. [snaps clapboard]

Man - [offscreen] Here? Where?

Woman - [offscreen] B-mark?

Director - [offscreen, unintelligible]

Adrian - This side? Switches which side of the cable he is leaning against] Ah, hold up! Wait! Get me the other sword.

~There's a School~

Loft above dojo

RR - [into phone] Okay, that's great. Yeah, thank you very much. [sets phone down] Mac... There's a sch--

Adrian - There's a school? There's a school. [singing] There's a school... There's a school...

Man - [offscreen] We're still rolling.

[Stan walks back to starting point.]

Director - [offscreen] You were speeding up, so we didn't discover Mikey [in the background] as nicely, so it's a pity.

Man - [offscreen] Ready? And...

Stan - Is it "There's a school"? "There's a school."

Woman - [offscreen] "There's a school upstate called--"

Stan - Yes, okay.

Director - [offscreen] Ready? Action.

RR - [into phone] Okay, great, thank you. Okay, bye-bye. [sets phone down] Mac... There's a school upstate called St. Simon's. They can look after Mikey.

DM - You sure?

4x04: Leader of the Pack

~Dog Wrangling~

Gillian Horvath - Adrian Paul is a dog lover who often brought his own Rottweilers to the set. The dogs in this episode are trained professionals, not Adrian's pets, but his immediate chemistry with his co-stars is apparent.

Loft above dojo, night

Adrian - [as dog shifts position on the couch] Stay. Stay. [Dog sits up.]

Handler - [offscreen] One second, guys. [briefly comes into frame] Lie down. Lie down. Lie down. Down. Stay. Stay. [goes back off camera]

DM - [looks up from his book, reacts to RR's lines (not heard)] With a little help from Lucille, here, yeah. She'll go back to the breeder's tomorrow... [re Kanis' dogs] with interest. What about you? Did you find Roszca? [listens to RR's lines (barely audible offscreen)] Never does. [listens to remainder of RR's lines (barely audible offscreen)]

Park

Handler - [offscreen] Stroker! Stroker! Come on, Stroker! [whistles] Stroker! Stroker! Stroker! Stroker! Where's he {gone}? [Rottweiler moseys into view.] Stroker! [claps hands] Stroker! Stroker, come here. Stroker! Stroker! Stroker! [Stroker wanders along edge of bushes, lifts his leg and leaves his mark, wanders a bit further, stops to smell the weeds.] John, call him to you. [They continue to call the dog, who continues to sniff the vegetation and ignore them.]

Gillian Horvath - A second unit was sent out--

Park

Gillian Horvath - [voice-over] -- with Adrian Paul's stunt double to get some convincing attack footage. One strategy is to tie the dogs to the victim with leads made of fishing line, and so as he struggles, the dogs appear to be attacking him. Ed Wood would be so proud.

[No audio as the stunt double rolls around on the ground with two Rottweilers, who 'roughhouse' with him a bit and then stop.]

4x05: Double Eagle

~Filming the Transition~

Gillian Horvath - One way of achieving a creative transition into the flashback was to bring a piece of furniture from one set onto another, using camera movement to create a seamless flow into a scene from the past. In this case, Duncan's bed is set up in the Casino, and the camera pans upwards to discover the flashback. Once Adrian's off camera, he starts goofing around. Note director Mario Azzopardi playing the wealthy count who offers to buy Amanda's dress.

Loft above dojo, night

Director - [offscreen] Stand by, here we go.

Man - [offscreen] And... frame.

DM - Oh, Amanda, come on. How long can you stay mad at somebody?

Amanda - Just until hell freezes over. You know how much that place meant to me.

Man - Now {??}.

[Camera pans up into darkness above them & lights come up to reveal casino table scene.]

Adrian - [offscreen] Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Hey, that's Mario Azzopardi, isn't it? The one in the front? Yeah, that's the guy. Getting the cards. Oh, hey, look at him, he's a professional. [Mario, sitting at casino table, flips him off. Adrian laughs.] Cut!

Loft above dojo, night

Man with clapboard - [offscreen] --six, mark {??} [snaps clapboard]

Adrian - {Help!}

Man - [offscreen] And... frame.

Director - [offscreen] Ac-tion.

DM - Oh, come on, Amanda. How long can you stay mad at somebody?

Amanda - Just until hell freezes over. You know how much that place meant to me.

[Camera pans up into darkness above them & lights come up to reveal casino table scene.]

Adrian - [offscreen, hushed] There's Mario Azzopardi, schmoozing like a real gambler. He's a perfectionist. The man has suaveness, sophistication, and a panache that is not known in the outside world. Yes, Mario Azzopardi is The Man. [laughs]

~When the Moon Hits Your Eye~

Gillian Horvath - The plan was to use CGI to replace the right half of the screen with the burned-out saloon. The crew were goofing around in the part of the frame that was to be replaced. And apparently Adrian Paul didn't think they went far enough.

Flashback - San Francisco, 1888 - Queen of Spades Gambling Palace, next morning

[Crowd of guys in background on right side of camera frame wave their arms around, appearing to be flipping off the actors and/or the camera.]

Adrian - [to Liz] I guess that Mario Azzopardi, I think he needs to have a mooning job. What do you think?

[Adrian unbuttons his trousers, takes off his suspenders, turns around & moons the camera. Elizabeth covers her face with her hands. Crew offscreen clap and whistle and laugh. The crowd in the background moves offscreen as Adrian pulls his trouser back up.]

Adrian - I thought if you wouldn't do it, I was going to do it.

Elizabeth - You guys {??}, you were like... [mimics the crew dancing about with their middle fingers up]

4x07: The Colonel

~Deleted Scenes:
Amanda and Joe~

Gillian Horvath - This episode came out long and a big chunk of banter between Amanda and Joe that got left on the cutting room floor, including an entire deleted scene, is seen here for the first time.

Joe's Bar, night

Director - [offscreen] Action.

Joe - [slicing limes at the bar] Amanda, for thousands of years, the Watchers have lived by one single set of rules. Okay? We observe, we record, and we just stay the hell out of it.

Amanda - Would you give me a break? That is such a guy-thing. [glances behind her as Melissa walks past] You have your rules and Duncan has his.

Joe - Look. Mac and I had a good friend named Charlie DeSalvo. And he is dead because I broke those rules. [cuts his finger on the knife] Ah, damn it! See? I bleed. I can get an infection and die.

Amanda - You'll want to run some cold water on that.

Joe - [rinses his finger at the sink] You know, on the outside we might look alike, but underneath, we are different species. Mac was right to back off. It's better this way.

Amanda - Look, Joe, we are all different, you know? Black, white, men, women--

[A beat while Jim waits to see if she will finish her line.]

Joe - You live in different worlds, don't you? Well, with me and Mac, it's different universes.

Amanda - Then why are you both so hurt?

Joe - What do you mean by that?

Amanda - Well, I mention your name, and he immediately changes the subject. And when I bring him up, you spend ten minutes telling me all the things you don't have in common.

Joe - Which is just about everything. I took an oath, I have to live by it.

Amanda - All right, let's just picture two gravestones. One says, "He lived by the rules." And the other one says, "He was a good friend." Now which one do you want?

Joe - [scoffs] I guess you tried to get the Beatles back together.

Amanda - No, but I did keep the Stones from breaking up one time. Come on, Joe, just -- just talk to him, okay, please?

Joe - I'll think about it.

Amanda - Good, because he's on his way over.

Joe - MacLeod? He's coming here... to see me?

Amanda - Well, sort of. I told him it was your night off.

Joe's Bar, night

[Camera now close on Joe.]

Joe - MacLeod...

Amanda - [offscreen] Mm-hmm.

Joe - Is coming here?

Amanda - [offscreen] Mm-hmm.

Joe - To see me?

Amanda - [offscreen] Well, actually, I told him that you had the night off.

Joe - You expect me to make the first move?

Amanda - Would you, would you please, for me, Joe, please?

Joe - Ohhh... [makes a growly noise in his throat] You are a piece of work.

[Liz laughs.]

Director - [offscreen] Cut-- Cut before that line.

[Crew laughs.]

Joe's Bar, night

Man - [offscreen] Great, thank you. And... frame..

Director - [offscreen] Action.

Joe - Do you ever think about doing something else for a living?

Amanda - No, not really.

Joe - I mean, it's never bothered you, huh? The stealing?

Amanda - Well, you see a field of flowers, you just pick a few. Look, I only steal from people who can afford it.

Joe - Oh, a regular Robin Hood.

Amanda - Oh, no, not really. I do steal from the rich, but I keep it all for myself.

[Amanda checks her watch, then turns at commotion in background where Melissa has "accidentally" knocked her drink into her mark's lap.]

~Filming the Fistfight~

Gillian Horvath - It's rare that a fight this long and complex can be filmed in one master take. Adrian Paul's teacher plays one of the on-screen opponents.

Parking garage, night

Gillian Horvath - [voice-over] You know you have a good one when the crew applauds.

Director - [offscreen] Action.

[DM enters parking garage, walks toward T-bird, whistling. Cisco gets out of the car parked next to it.]

Cisco - Hey, pal, you wouldn't have change for a buck? I need some money for the meter.

[Bert comes up behind DM with a length of pipe. DM dodges Bert's attacks and fights off both men.]

Director - [offscreen] And cut!

[Crew member applauds.]

~If at First You Don't Succeed~

Street

DM - Yeah, dressed like that. Right.

Amanda - What's wrong with the way I'm dressed?

DM - Oh, nothing.

Amanda - You know, I think I'm taller than you are. [tries to be taller than DM]

DM - Oh really? Hah!

Amanda - This is the place.

DM - Wrong place.

Amanda - Where are we at?

DM - Over there, you moron.

Amanda - [pointing] THIS is the place.

Adrian - [to camera] We lost the place.

Amanda - [offscreen] This is the place. Over here.

LaBelle's, night

Amanda - [looks at her watch] --forty-five seconds before the police get here. Come on. [runs back to the car with Melissa]

Melissa - You are so weird.

Amanda - Oh, honey, you don't even know.

[They run back to Melissa's convertible. Melissa gets in on driver's side. Amanda tries (and fails) to open passenger-side door.]

Man - [offscreen] Jump in! Jump in!

[Amanda goes over top of door into passenger seat. Melissa starts car, drives away.]

Director - [offscreen] Cut.

~Alternate Scenes:
Melissa Dies~

Gillian Horvath - The storyline of this episode was filmed two ways. In the unaired version, Melissa is killed by the colonel, while in the version that aired, she's only almost killed. Not only her death scene was filmed both ways, but also the scene in the cell where Duncan asks how Melissa is doing, and the tag where Amanda's reason for leaving is somewhat more serious if her protege is actually dead.

Empty dojo, night

Amanda - Oh, my God. What did he do to you?

Melissa - Spiders.

Amanda - Just hold on, it's going to be okay. It's going to be okay.

Melissa - I'm cold.

Amanda - It's okay. Hold me. It's going to be okay, Melissa.

Melissa - He thought I was you. [Amanda looks down at her.] I guess I must look pretty good, huh?

Amanda - Oh, baby, you've always been beautiful. You've always been beautiful.

Melissa - I don't want to die.

Amanda - Oh, you're not gonna die. You're not gonna die. It's going to be okay. Don't. [cries]

Melissa - Amanda... I just wanted to have some fun. [goes still]

Amanda - Melissa? Melissa? No. [lowers Melissa's body to the floor, crying] No, honey, it's going to be okay. Oh, god, no, don't die. Don't die. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. No. No. [sobs]

Director - [offscreen] Cut. That's very nice. Great.

Loft above dojo

Man with clapboard - [offscreen] Uh, A-frame.

Director - [offscreen] Action.

Amanda - [packing F her trunk] Ah, this damn stuff used to fit before.

DM - Amanda, it wasn't your fault.

Amanda - Oh, yeah? Then whose fault was it, huh? She died because she wanted to be like me, and I just let her. I'm vain, I'm stupid, and I'm selfish...

DM - Killian killed her. You didn't.

Amanda - I know, well, it doesn't feel like that. Look, Duncan, I love you and you are my best, best friend. I just... I need to go away, get it together.

DM - [nods] Door's always open.

Amanda - I know. You just forget how fragile they are. You know, I'm going to, I'm going to call you when I get all my stuff together and you can, you can send all my stuff to me. [hugs him]

DM - Anything I can do, anything you need, darling.

Amanda - You really want to do something for me? Why don't you go see, Joe?

DM - Amanda...

Amanda - Life is just too short... for him.

DM - I can't promise. Okay?

Amanda - Just think about it. [gives him a quick kiss, then a longer one, then hugs him again]

4x08: Reluctant Heroes

~Words to the Wise...~

MacLeod's Victorian

RR - You going to to look for him?

DM - Yep.

RR - [follows DM off porch] I thought you said he was good, Mac. Really good. Maybe even better than you.

DM - I don't care.

RR - You want him that bad, huh?

DM - I let him get away once. I'm not going to do it again. Close the house up for me, Rich. [He exits, leaving Richie looking after him.]

RR - Sure. Note to myself -- don't piss off MacLeod.

Markum's grocery store

Markum - --a man I had no business knowing. Vince Petrovic.

DM - And you tried to pay him back...?

Markum - He wanted half my store. He said that I was his partner. I told him to go to hell.

DM - [holds up can of 'PAM' spray] You should've used PAM. It stops all sticking from any cooking surface-- [looks into camera] And if you can get, even get it for five-twelve here at Adrian's corner store. If you want to buy it anywhere else, we'll match that price. Come to Adrian's corner store. We'll be waiting. [mugs a huge smile with 'PAM' can as crew laughs]

Director - [offscreen] And cut.

4x09: The Wrath of Kali

~Extended Scene:
Tux Day~

Gillian Horvath - We learn a little more about Duncan's teaching career--

The University Museum of Cultural Anthropology: Creation Mythology display

Gillian Horvath - [voice-over] --in this longer version of the opening.

RR - Man, all these people just to see a statue from India.

DM - Yeah, and donate money. A good permanent collection doesn't come cheap.

RR - Well, something tells me these people can afford it.

DM - Oh, yeah. Academics, university alumni, one or two foreign ambassadors... Come on, you fit right in.

RR - Oh right. Yeah, me and the professors.

DM - I bet you'd be happier if it was you and the sorority girls.

RR - Maybe I would.

Director - [offscreen] Cut.

The University Museum of Cultural Anthropology: Creation Mythology display

Director - [offscreen] And frame. And action.

Shandra - [as DM & RR approach her] Duncan.

DM - Hi.

Shandra - Well, I am glad you decided to make it.

DM - Oh, I think we both know who decided. Shandra Devane, this is Richie Ryan.

Shandra - [shakes RR's hand] Let me guess... Academic, artist, or just another wealthy collector?

RR - Well, uh... interested amateur.

DM - Careful. Shandra's the one that shanghaied me into those seminars.

Shandra - Persuaded, please.

RR - You're THAT professor? I'm sorry, I was expecting someone, you know, tweedier, maybe smoking a pipe.

Shandra - Well, I'll have to work on that. Come on, let's have a look at her. [They walk off camera.]

Director - [offscreen] Cut. Very nice {??}.

The University Museum of Cultural Anthropology: Creation Mythology display

Director - [offscreen] Are we set now?

Adrian - So from which line?

Stan - From, uh, "You're that professor."

Director - [offscreen] "Careful." "Careful. She's the one who shanghaied--"

Stan - Oh, okay.

Director - [offscreen] And frame.

Crew guy - [runs past in background] Whoops, sorry.

Director - [offscreen] And... action.

DM - Careful. She's the one that shanghaied me into giving those seminars.

Shandra - Persuaded, please.

RR - Oh, you're THAT professor?

DM - Mm-hmm.

RR - I'm sorry, I was expecting someone... tweedier, you know, maybe smoking a pipe?

Shandra - Oh. Well, I'll have to work on that. Come on, let's have a look at her. [They walk off camera.]

Man - [offscreen] Yeah, that's--

Director - [offscreen] Cut.

Man - [offscreen] --nice.

~Deleted Scene:
Duncan and Chandra~ (sic)

Gillian Horvath - The episode was running long and the scene had to be cut. The plot works just fine without it, too.

INT. UNIVERSITY - MUSEUM DISPLAY AREA - DAY

Man with clapboard - [offscreen] --three. A-mark. Mark. [snaps clapboard]

Director - [offscreen] Ready, and action.

[CLOSE - THE KALI STATUE - the wild eyes, protruding tongue.]

Shandra - [offscreen] Look at her. Sixteen hundred years old, and you'd swear she was alive. I could look at her forever. [Camera swings around to show them.] You know how many private collectors I had to fight off to bring her--?

DM - Yes, I do. I do.

Shandra - Well then, WHY are you putting me through the wringer again? We'll never learn the truth about Millay.

DM - No, I know we won't. But I’m sure you could think of other reasons...?

Shandra - Oh, no, no, no. No... Don't you think I don't know what you're trying to pull?

DM - [innocently] What am I trying to pull?

Shandra - A guilt trip. My duty as an Indian, the sacredness of the-- [scoffs] Forget it. I already got an earful from Kamir. Sorry, Duncan. I worked far too hard to bring her here. Guilt won't cut it.

DM - How about prestige? Think of the goodwill you'd earn. You'd be a hero.

Shandra - What, by returning the Kali? I'd be an idiot.

DM - No! Call a news conference, you and Kamir. Donate it to the museum in Calcutta. Look, it'd be great P.R. for the school. You'd be on the cutting edge.

Shandra - You've been taking those Scientology tapes home.

DM - Well, it definitely beats the alternative.

Shandra - What alternative?

DM - [casually] Well, word gets out. You know, a sacred piece, denied its rightful heirs... possibly stolen in the first place. There are other ways to get the museum on the map.

Shandra - [incredulous] Duncan MacLeod, you're blackmailing me.

DM - Guilt wasn't working. [beat] Look, whatever it costs, it'll be less than what I'm willing to donate to the museum. What do you say?

Shandra - I always wanted to be on the cutting edge.

DM - You're doing the right thing.

Shandra - Yeah, sure. Tell me again why we're friends.

DM - It must be because I'm Indian.

Shandra - You're not Indian.

DM - Oh, it must be because you are.

Director - [offscreen] Cut.

Adrian - [offscreen] Oh, sorry, whew, sorry. I thought we {??}.

Veena Sood - [offscreen] We're getting there.

4x10: Chivalry

~Filming the Transition~

Gillian Horvath - The directors and editors were always trying to create unique shots for Highlander's signature transitions from present-day to flashback. Not every clever idea worked. In the case of the transition from Duncan's confrontation with Kristin in the limo into the flashback, this first shot, which is what's used in the episode, was actually filmed weeks later with "The Blitz". The limo window slides open to reveal a blue screen, which can then be digitally replaced with the flashback.

But in the original concept, the transition was shot as a practical effect. The limo door was carried to the flashback location, and set up so that when the window slid down, it would reveal Duncan in the bathtub. In order to have Duncan's reflection in the limo window, as it slid down, a life-size cardboard stand-up of Duncan was created with his hand out as though knocking on the window. That stand-up was sold at auction at one of the conventions, by the way.

Street outside Richie's apartment

Man with clapboard - [offscreen] Take 4, A-mark. [snaps clapboard]

Man - [offscreen] Ah, Adrian, sorry, move to your left?

Adrian - [reflection visible in limo window, moves slightly to the left] Paolo wanted me to start a little more to my right. Is this a good position, Paulo?

Paolo - [offscreen] That's good, yeah, okay, great, and, action.

[DM smacks his hand on the limo window.]

Man - [offscreen] Window.

[Window lowers to reveal blue screen as camera zooms in.]

Man - [offscreen] Cut.

Flashback - Normandy, France, 1659 - Kristin's bathchamber

Man with clapboard - [offscreen] Take two, camera A. Mark. [snaps clapboard]

[Camera centers on reflection of cardboard stand-up in limo window.]

Director - [offscreen] Great. And... action.

[Window lowers to reveal DM asleep in bathtub. Camera slowly pans around to reveal Kristin standing in the doorway.]

Director - [offscreen] And...

Kristin - [looks through her framed fingers] A work of art.

[DM is dozing in a high-backed bathtub. He startles awake, then looks around frantically.]

DM - Where are my clothes? They were right there.

Kristin - The servants took them.

DM - To clean?

Kristin - To burn.

DM - To burn!? [starts to rise, then reconsiders] What am I to wear? I cannae travel-- Those are the only ones I have!

Kristin - Who said you were going anywhere?

DM - What do you mean, 'going anywhere'? I'll go where I please.

Kristin - [re clothes she's brought for him] I think this is far more appropriate attire for a gentleman, no?

DM - [holds out a hand] Hand them over and leave.

Kristin - Come and get them.

DM - Don't think I won't.

Kristin - Oh, I'm hoping you will.

DM - I'm getting up.

Kristin - I can't wait.

DM - [poised to get up] I really mean it.

Kristin - Good.

DM - [sits back in tub, bluff called] Have you no shame?

Kristin - No. None whatsoever. [DM gathers his resolve, stands up, steps out of the tub and walks, wet & naked, over to her to grab the clothes.] My, my. I do think I can work with you. [leaves]

[DM, covering himself with the bundles of clothes, looks around, then scurries offscreen.]

Director - [offscreen, chuckling] Cut.

~We Do This for a Living~

Flashback - Normandy, France, 1659 - wooded road

Adrian - Why don't you use it? [opens coach door, looks inside] Och, she's got large breasts!

Man - [offscreen] Let's go in. Let's go in. Go in for the breasts.

[Camera moves in.]

Adrian - Oh, the breasts! Look!

[Camera looks into interior of coach, which is pitch black.]

Flashback - Normandy, France, 1659 - wooded road

DM - [stomps toward coach] Hey, you! You carry a sword! Why don't you use it? Huh? [opens coach door, finds a sword blade pointing at his throat] Ooh.

Director - [offscreen] Cut.

Flashback - Normandy, France, 1659 - wooded road

Man - [offscreen] Good. Any problems?

Flashback - Normandy, France, 1659 - wooded road

[Camera pulls back to reveal Adrian lying on his back on the ground, waving his arms and legs.]

Man - [offscreen] And...

Adrian - [to camera] I do this for a living.

Director - [offscreen] And action.

[DM reacts to taking the blow that knocked him down.]

Kristin Agency - office, night

Kristin - [thrusts sword forward (to stab RR), then draws it back] Nobody leaves me! Not Maria, and certainly not you! [swings blade, then laughs]

~Filming the Kata~

Gillian Horvath - It's not as easy as it looks to get through this kata take after take, without missing a move... or whacking into a prop.

Empty dojo

Man with clapboard - [offscreen] B-mark. [snaps clapboard]

Director - [offscreen] And... frame. Action.

[DM centers himself, begins kata. Methos enters dojo. Adrian hits one of the ceiling lights with the katana, making it clang like a gong. DM finishes katana, holds last pose.]

Methos - That's a nice piece of work. May I? [walks toward DM with his hand out. After a beat, DM hands katana over. Methos examines katana, then presses blade to DM's neck.]

DM - Not funny, Methos.

Methos - Not meant to be. [backs DM toward wall] Not only are you naive... now you are weaponless. Do you know how many Immortals she's killed? You want a list?

DM - All right. You've made your point.

Methos - Have I? One day she will kill you.

DM - She's tried before.

Methos - You're better with a blade than her, yes. You are stronger than her, yes. But if you keep letting her walk away, one day she will take your head. Yes.

DM - Oh, I don't know. Maybe she'll stop to gloat like you do. And then--[pushes Methos away, knocking them both out of frame]

Director - [offscreen] Cut.

Adrian - [offscreen] Did I hit the light or what?

Gillian Horvath - Another of our signature transitions, achieved by setting up the painting prop from the flashback in the present day set.

Empty dojo

[Man snaps clapboard.]

Peter - [holding katana to Adrian's neck, setting up the scene] One day... she's going to get lucky...

Man - [offscreen] And frame.

Peter - ...and take your head.

Director - [offscreen] And action.

DM - Oh, I don't know. She'll probably stop and gloat like you do. [pushes Methos away, knocking him to the floor]

Methos - Great, you knock me on my ass because I make a bad joke. If you keep letting her walk away, you don't take a shot? That's very suicidal.

DM - You know what she was to me.

Methos - Yes, and I know what she is. A killer. You treat her like one.

[Camera pans across to painting from flashback, then past painting back to the dojo where Adrian & Methos are playfully clacking swords.]

Flashback - Normandy, France, 1660 - gazebo on Kristin's estate grounds

Director - [offscreen] And action.

[Camera pans from DM posing for the painting, across the painting, and back to Adrian, who has lifted the front of his kilt (he's wearing shorts underneath) and is doing a little dance.]

Director - [offscreen] And cut.

~But There are Things I Like...~

Loft above dojo

Methos - You'll get over it, too.

DM - Oh, will I?

Methos - Mm-hmm.

DM - Did you know Mencius?

Methos - Student of Confucius. Yeah.

DM - "I dislike death, but there are things that I like--" [makes a face at camera]

[laughter]

Peter - I dislike death, but there are things I like.

4x11: Timeless

~Extended Scene:
Shakespeare~

Gillian Horvath - The Elizabethan flashbacks had to be trimmed in editing. The uncut version gives a little more of the goofy side of Duncan MacLeod and Adrian Paul, as well as one of my favorite cut lines ever -- Walter's challenge, "When you can best me with a sword, then you can play a man's part." Apparently Walter didn't see the bathtub scene from "Chivalry".

Flashback - English countryside, 1663 - behind traveling actors' stage

DM - Och, I hate this dress.

Walter - I think it's very becoming.

DM - Oh, aye, and the other thing is the play makes no sense.

Walter - [laughs] Ah, this should be good. Go on.

DM - If I were Petruchio, I wouldn't give Kate the time of day. She's a creature, a shrew! It makes no sense for him to want her, let alone woo her.

Walter - Oh, be serious.

DM - [pouting] I want to play her nicer.

Walter - You want to rewrite Shakespeare?

DM - Aye. Why not?

Walter - [loudly] You want-- [lowers his voice] You want to rewrite William Shakespeare?! If Kate were nicer, there'd be no play!

DM - Then Petruchio's a fool.

Walter - Just say the lines. It's what you're getting paid for.

DM - Next time, I will do the men's parts. I want to do the swordfights.

Walter - When you can beat me with a sword, then you can play a man's part. Listen to how they love us -- music to my ears!

~Mind Your Arse~

Gillian Horvath - Why are there two guys in the background holding Beaufort's donkey? It's all for an elaborate sight gag that never quite came off.

Flashback - English countryside, 1663 - behind traveling actors' stage

DM - [grabs his rapier from nearby] We're not on stage here.

Beaufort - "Let Hercules himself do what he may, The cat will mew and the dog will have his day."

Walter - Hamlet. Nicely done.

[Beaufort lunges at DM, is caught and pushed away by Walter.]

DM - [offscreen] Oh, you tore my skirt! [They fight. Beaufort backs toward two men standing by a donkey.] Mind your ass! [Fight continues briefly, then Adrian stops it.]

Adrian - Wrong one. You should've done the hit first. Go back, go back to the ass. Go back to the ass. I'll give you the last two, to "Mind your ass," okay? Ready? Give you the last two thrusts. Ready? [thrusts at Beaufort twice, then:] Mind your ass! [Fight continues (although Beaufort misses another parry).]

~Filming the Swordfight~

Gillian Horvath - Guest actor Ron Halder was a classically trained stage actor who'd never done television before. He had a lot of Shakespeare on his resume and he knew how to sword fight. It's not often that a long complicated fight like this can be filmed in one master take from start to finish, with just a few rough patches along the way. Such as Ron Halder ducking into a blow and nearly losing his head for real if not for Adrian's quick reaction.

Sen Goyen Buddhist Retreat entrance

DM - [his katana at Walter's neck] Claudia, get in the monastery and wait for me.

Walter -[calmly] Go on. I'll be in in a moment. MacLeod knows which of us is the better swordsman. [spins around, hits DM's sword with his own]

DM - I've had a little practice since the last time we met.

Walter - You never had all that much talent, MacLeod.

DM - I never pretended to. You, on the other hand, couldn't write a sonnet to save your life.

Walter - "Lay on, Macduff, and damned be him that first cries, 'Hold, enough!' "

DM - Oh, shut up already.

[They begin to fight. Walter retreats, dodges a blow, trips over a decorative rock.]

Adrian - [to crew] He got out too soon! Where did she go?

Sen Goyen Buddhist Retreat entrance

Walter - "--and damned be him that first cries, 'Hold, enough!' "

DM - Oh, shut up already.

[They begin to fight. Walter parries the first blow, then he goes high while Adrian goes low.]

Ron - It's up.

Adrian - No, it's not. It's down.

Ron - F**, my fault.

Sen Goyen Buddhist Retreat entrance

DM - I've gotten a little better since the last time we met.

Walter - You never had all that much talent, MacLeod.

DM - Oh, I don't pretend I had. YOU couldn't write a sonnet to save your life.

Walter - "Lay on, Macduff, and damned be him that first cries, 'Hold, enough!' "

DM - Oh, shut up already.

[They begin to fight. Ron ducks JUST under Adrian's blade instead of parrying.]

Adrian - Oh, sh*beeeeep*. Boy, you nearly had your f*beeep*in' head taken off.

Ron - I know. Thank you, thank you.

Sen Goyen Buddhist Retreat entrance

Director - [offscreen] And action.

Walter -MacLeod knows which of us is the better swordsman.

DM - I've had a little more practice since the last time we met.

Walter - You never had all that much talent, MacLeod.

DM - I didn't pretend to. You, on the other hand, couldn't write a sonnet to save your life.

Walter - "Lay on, Macduff, and damned be him that first cries, 'Hold, enough!' "

DM - Oh, shut up already.

[They begin to fight. Walter retreats, dodges a blow, presses forward, ducks a blow, jumps onto rock feature, then off again. They continue to exchange parries, including a trick shot behind Walter's back. DM eventually disarms Walter.]

DM - Now swear it, Walter. Stay away from Claudia, and I'll spare you.

Man - {??} mark.

Director - And... frame. And action!

DM - I've gotten a little better since the last time we met.

Walter - You never had much talent, MacLeod.

DM - I never pretended to. But you, on the other hand, couldn't write a sonnet to save your life.

Walter - "Lay on, Macduff, and damned be him who first cries, 'Hold, enough!' "

DM - Oh, shut up already.

[They begin to fight. Walter retreats, dodges a blow, chuckles, ducks a blow, jumps onto rock feature, then runs back over by small statue. They fight past and behind the statue before stalling.]

Adrian - Come on, go back, go back. Same place, same spot. Ready?

[Fight restarts, pauses.]

Adrian - Shit. [attacks again, pushes Walter back past the statue] Come here, Walter. Come right here. Otherwise, you're not going to get your line.

[Fight continues, DM disarms Walter.]

DM - Now swear it, Walter. Stay away from Claudia, and I'll spare you. Swear it.

Walter - "Out, out, brief candle! Life is but a walking shadow, a poor player who struts and frets his hour upon the stage, and then is heard no more."

Adrian - [flubs line] I should shut you up just to-- I should take your head just to shut you up.

Walter - What value will my life have without her genius to color it?

DM - Fine. Have it your way.

Walter - Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait! [sighs, crosses his fingers behind his back] I promise.

DM - Promise what?

Walter - I promise to leave her alone.

DM - Let me see both your hands.

Walter - [holds his hands up in front of him, uncrossed] I promise.

DM - Good. [gives him back his sword]

Walter - "I've watched the stars burn bright and sure, and then with a flash, disappear. But still, I'm the one who endures."

DM - [starts walking toward monastery with Walter] That was pretty good.

Walter - You think so?

DM - Who wrote it?

Walter - I did.

DM - Really?

Walter - Yeah.

Director - [offscreen] Cut.

~Extended Scene:
Panic, Pure Panic~

Gillian Horvath - The rough cut of this scene in the loft is slightly longer than the final version. It also contains a significant difference in editing. In the original scene when Duncan mentions that he has been in love a couple of times, he's thinking of Tessa. In the scene as aired, an angle on Claudia implies that he's thinking of her.

Loft above dojo

[Claudia is taping sections of sheet music together on the sofa while DM & Methos talk in the kitchen area.]

Methos - Alexa... You see? Even her name is beautiful.

DM - If you say so.

Methos - I haven't felt this way since... God, no, you don't want to know.

DM - She seems very nice.

Methos - Nice? Mac, she is more than nice. She -- there was something, you know? There was a -- there was a spark. I wonder if she felt it. I mean, I-I don't want to make a fool of myself.

DM - Really?

Methos - Okay, well maybe I do.

DM - Yeah.

Methos - Did you ever feel like that?

Flashback - Quay by Notre Dame

(1x14: For Evil's Sake)

[DM runs along the Seine, jumps aboard tour boat that is passing by.]

Tessa - Hey! What are you doing?

DM - [climbs over railing onto deck] Sorry. I didn't want to miss the boat.

[Several policemen run toward Seine.]

DM - [offscreen] Excuse me.

Loft above dojo

(resume previous scene)

DM - A couple of times. I don't see what the problem is.

Methos - Panic. Pure panic. I can't stop thinking about her. What if she doesn't like me?

DM - What if she does? [re Claudia] What am I going to tell her?

Methos - What about the truth? At least then she'd know what she's facing.

DM - Yeah. Be nice if she had a semblance of a normal life. When she finds out what she is, that becomes impossible.

Methos - You can't keep her here forever.

[Claudia slaps down the magazine, calls in to them.]

Claudia - Hello! Would someone like to pay a little attention to me, please?

DM - [dry] It's what I live for.

Claudia - Duncan--

Adrian - Excuse me, are we having a problem here? [laughs] Fuck you. What's the {??} "Aah-Aah", is that a contraction? Jesus, I thought you were in pain or something. [lots of laughter offscreen] I thought that something broke. "Aah."

Anne - Oh, god. Great.

DM - I'll do it.

Anne - No! No, please stay here. Please hold me.

DM - Come on, Anne. [continues murmuring encouragements]

Karen - Push.

Anne - No.

Karen - Now.

Anne - I can't.

Karen - Push.

Anne - I can't. I can't. [starts crying]

Karen - Push.

DM - Come on, come on, it's all right. Come on, push. Come on, breathe. Breathe. Good, good.

Karen - She's coming. She's coming. Push. Push. Push. The baby's coming. Push.

DM - You can do it. You can do it. Come on, you can do it.

Karen - Yes, yes. [laughs] Oh, yes, yes, she's beautiful. She's beautiful.

Anne - [holds out her arms] Let me see. Give her to me. Please, let me see. [is handed a small doll, screams, laughs]

Adrian - Whose eyebrows are that? [looking at doll's thick black-marker eyebrows] God. Who did you say you got with -- Denis Healey? Oh my God. [makes doll's arm wave] Say hello, Mommy. Hello, Mommy-- Let's put her back. [hands doll offscreen as they all laugh]

~Extended Scene:

Gillian Horvath - Most of this opening scene establishing the relationship between MacLeod and Coltek had to be cut because we were running long.

Director - [offscreen] Action.

Coltec - [sitting in his parked jeep, punches number into cellphone, speaks into phone] MacLeod.

Voice - [offscreen, reading DM's lines] Coltec. I don't believe it. Are you in town?

Coltec - [into phone] Mac, if I was in town, I'd be at your place with my feet up, watching golf. I'm calling from my truck.

Voice - [offscreen, reading DM's lines] Jim Coltec? On a cell-phone?

Coltec - [into phone] Well, what'd you expect? Smoke signals?

Voice - [offscreen, reading DM's lines] Where the hell are you?

Coltec - [into phone] Some little country road... Lousy one, too. You guys-- You white guys stole our land, the least you could do is pay your taxes.

Voice - [offscreen, reading DM's lines] You're lost.

Coltec - [into phone] Very funny. Indians always know exactly where we're going. [looks at map] And I'm just heading into... uh, Steveston.

Voice - [offscreen, reading DM's lines] You'll be here in three hours. I've got something to do, but why don't we get together later?

Coltec - [into phone]Mac, I've been on the road all day. How about meeting me at Arlen Ridge? Been ages since we were out there.

Voice - [offscreen, reading DM's lines] Deal, but on one condition. You've got to bring dinner.

Coltec - [into phone] Deal... only if you leave your damn harmonica behind. White man make heap terrible music. Completely tone deaf.

Voice - [offscreen, reading DM's lines] Look who's talking. If I sang as bad as you -- no, half as bad...

Coltec - [into phone] WHAT? Sorry, Mac, I'm losing you in the Canyon... [closes phone] Gotcha. [sets phone aside, starts singing--] When Aztec eyes are smiling, you can hear the angels sing... [starts engine] La dee da dee-dee dah-dee--

DM - [into phone] James Coltec on a cell-phone. That's interesting.

Coltec - [offscreen] What'd you expect? Smoke signals?

DM - [into phone] Where are you?

Coltec - [offscreen] Some little country road... Lousy one, too. You white guys stole our land, you could at least pay your taxes.

DM - [into phone] Steveston? You're only three hours away. Well, look -- I've got something to do first, but why don't we meet up afterward?

Coltec - [offscreen] Mac, I've been on the road all day. How about meeting at Arlen Ridge? Been ages since we were out there.

DM - [into phone] Yeah. On one condition. You bring dinner.

Coltec - [offscreen] Deal, I'll pick up Chinese... but only if you leave your damn harmonica behind. White man make heap terrible music. Completely tone deaf.

DM - [chuckles into phone] If I sang as bad as you -- no, half as bad...

Coltec - [offscreen] What? Sorry, Mac, didn't catch that. Must be losing you in the Canyon...

DM - Yeah. [lowers phone] Jim Coltec. [sets phone down, grabs jacket, leaves loft]

Director - [offscreen] Cut.

~Deleted Scene:

Sergeant - [enters room] Sun's up. You got a god, you best start praying.

DM - No.

Coltec - [stops him] No. I'll be fine. You must heal your grief. Go where the wars cannot find you. The Holy Place.

Sergeant - Only place waiting for you is the happy hunting ground.

[The Sergeant pulls Coltec away.]

DM - Where will I find it?

Coltec - Ride west and it will find you.

DM - {Ah-see kookoe.} [in script: I'll see you again.]

[Coltec is escorted out by the Sergeant.]

~Filming the Swordfight~

Gillian Horvath - The particular model of sword used by Richie's character was always giving the production trouble. The hilt cut up Stan Kirsch's hand, so he always had to wear glove when he was going to have a sword fight. The sword also had a nice, dangerous tendency to fall apart in use. In these dailies, you can see the swordmaster F. Braun McAsh running in to try and fix the sword, which doesn't work. After the sword flew to pieces, the dangerous sword was replaced by a more sturdy model with a different hilt, and the scene was framed and edited to keep the mismatched sword off screen as much as possible.

It was because of all the trouble with this sword that we decided to break Richie's sword in "End of Innocence" and give him a new one that would work better for him. Ironically, after getting his new sword, Richie only had one fight in the present, and for flashbacks, he still had to use the old sword.

Empty dojo, night

[DM & RR trade blows. Stan stops to screw the hilt of his sword back down.]

Stan - Sorry. Wait.

[F. Braun enters camera field to try to fix the sword hilt.]

Stan - I got it. I got it.

F. Braun - You got it? [exits]

Director - [offscreen] {??} ready. And action.

[DM & RR trade blows, Stan reacts to getting 'cut' on the shoulder. Fight continues. DM 'cuts' RR again, smacks a kiss on top of his head, disarms him.]

DM - Come here, boy. [holds katana to RR/s neck as he circles around him]

RR - [on his knees] If you're going to kill me, Mac, will you please just tell me why? The teacher kills the pupil, is that it? Because there can be only one, is that why?

DM - That sounds like as good reason as any. [He raises his katana for the killing blow, holds the pose, then *bang* from offscreen & DM falls to the floor and 'dies'.]

[Camera holds on RR for a moment, then swings around to reveal Joe standing at the dojo entrance.]

~Extended Scenes:
The Long Goodbye~

Gillian Horvath - After Duncan tries to kill him, Richie very wisely gets the hell out of dodge. In the original footage, it takes some convincing to get him to go.

Empty dojo, night

Joe - [walks toward RR] Are you all right?

RR - Yeah. Aw, Joe, what the hell? He tried to kill me. Oh, Mac... [moves toward DM's body]

Joe - Richie, no! Please, just get out of here. No matter what you do, DON'T go near him.

RR - You saw him, Joe. He needs help.

Joe - Don't you get it, Richie? This is not MacLeod. Not the one we knew. This man is not your friend.

RR - Oh, Joe...!

Joe - [overriding] And when he comes to, he'll try to take your head!

RR - What about you?

Joe - I'll have to take my chances. I'm not in the Game; I'm not Immortal. There's no Quickening. Please, go! Go!

RR - Okay.

Joe - Please.

[RR leaves.]

Director - [offscreen] Cut. Great.

4x14: Deliverance

~Alternate Storyline:
Phone Booth Plot~

Gillian Horvath - The episode "Deliverance", originally called "Leap of Faith", ran very long. In order to trim it down to time, without making it incomprehensible, part of the story had to be simplified. In the original script, Duncan attacks a Watcher, threatens his family, and gets an address for Sean Burns. In the final episode, Duncan just calls Sean on the phone.

EXT. STREET NEAR DOCKS - HON FLEURE

Director - [offscreen] Action.

[DM jumps over retaining wall, strides to phone booth.]

Massanet - [on phone in phone booth] 'Allo? What?!

DM - [grabs phone from him, wraps cord around Massanet's neck] Surprise. Out of order. Now, do you know an Immortal named Sean Burns? [shakes Massanet] Do you know an Immortal named Sean Burns? Are you deaf?

Massanet - You're crazy! I don't know who you're talking about!

DM - Really? [grabs Massanet's wrist, twisting it to bring his Watcher tattoo into view] A Watcher. How nice. The next lie's your last.

Massanet - Please... I have a wife, a child.

DM - Then you'd better tell me what I want to know. Because if you don't, I won't kill you... I'll kill them. Believe it. [beat] Sean Burns!

Massanet - He's at his chateau... out in the country... near Val D'Air.

DM - Good. [tightens cord]

Massanet - Please... I told the truth!

DM - [lets up slightly] Do you know who Joe Dawson is? [Massanet nods.] Good, because it's the only thing keeping you alive. You tell my "friend" Dawson that I know who you are. I know what to look for. The next Watcher he sends... dies. [releases cord] And then I'll come for him. Make sure he knows that. [lets Massanet leave the phone booth]

EXT. STREET NEAR DOCKS - HON FLEURE

[Different camera angle, on Massanet in phone booth.]

Massanet - [on phone in phone booth] 'Allo? What?!

DM - [grabs phone from him, wraps cord around Massanet's neck] Sorry. Out of order. Know an Immortal named Sean Burns? Is he still around?

Massanet - You're crazy! I don't know who you're talking about!

DM - Really? [grabs Massanet's wrist, twisting it to bring his Watcher tattoo into view] Isn't that nice? A Watcher. The next lie is your last.

Massanet - Please... I have a wife, a child.

DM - Then you'd better tell me what I want to know. Because if you don't, I'll kill them and not you. Now believe it. [beat, as phone booth glass begins to fog over from Massanet breathing on it] Sean Burns!

Massanet - He's at his chateau... out in the country... near Val D'Air.

DM - Good. [tightens cord]

Massanet - Please... I told the truth!

DM - [lets up slightly] Do you know who Joe Dawson is? [Massanet nods.] Good, because that's the only thing keeping you alive. And you tell my "friend" Dawson that I know who you are. I know what to look for. The next Watcher he sends... dies. [releases cord] And then I'll come for him. Make sure he knows that. [lets Massanet leave the phone booth]

Le Havre - phone booth

[Adrian holds phone to his ear, notices the fogged glass, wipes the fog away with his forearm, resets with phone to his ear.]

Director - [offscreen, reciting Sean's lines] Sean Burns here. Hello, hello? Who's this?

DM - [into phone] Sean. It's Duncan.

Director - [offscreen, reciting Sean's lines] Duncan? For the love of God.

Le Havre - phone booth

[DM sees Davis walking down pier carrying small bouquet of flowers. DM quickly exits phone booth & grabs Davis from behind, beats him unconscious.]

DM - [pats Davis down] Well, payback time, Mr. Davis. [check's Davis's coat pockets] You have a little wallet here somewhere, don't you? No, I've got it right here. [pulls Davis's wallet out of his OWN coat pocket] Did you want your wallet back? [tucks wallet into Davis's coat pocket]

Davis - [still pretending to be unconscious] Thank you.

DM - Oh, I guess you did. [looks up at camera] Fucker!

Gillian Horvath - The meeting between Adam Pierson and Watcher Claude Massanet had to be revoiced in post-production to reflect the changed storyline. In the original, Massanet referred to the now non-existent attack in the phone booth, and the actor's impenetrable French accent meant he had to be revoiced anyway. The resulting scene was edited in a style we jokingly called "shoulder theater". If you look over one actor's shoulder toward the other, hiding their mouth, they can basically be saying anything.

Road near Le Havre

[Methos's Volvo drives toward camera. Methos parks Volvo, walks over to Massanet.]

Massanet - Adam, how are you? What brings you to Le Havre?

Methos - What did you and MacLeod talk about?

Massanet - We didn't. It's all in my report. I lost him after he left the ship.

Methos - Claude, I don't have time for you to lie to me. You spoke to him. He knows you're a Watcher. I'm trying to find out where he might be going.

Massanet - What do you care? You're a researcher working on the Methos chronicle. You're not supposed to be in the field.

Methos - Dawson sent me. It's a special case with MacLeod. It's a Dark Quickening.

Massanet - [surprised] There really is such a thing?

Methos - Yes. [beat] Whatever you say stays with me. My word, no one else will know.

Massanet - He threatened to kill my wife and child. He asked me about... Sean Burns.

Methos - Okay, thanks...

Massanet - [grabs Methos' arm] You can't go after him. He knows who we are... what to look for. He'll kill you.

Methos - I'm tougher than I look.

~On Holy Ground~

Gillian Horvath - This is an example of the occasional scene for which every take is sufficiently different that it's fascinating to watch them all. Also, keep your eye out for our favorite crew member, the Magic Sword Pocket Guy.

Inside chapel

[Camera angle close-up on Methos.]

[Man with clapboard snaps clapboard.]

Director - [offscreen] Ready? Action.

[Offscreen, DM gasps, reviving.]

Methos - Good morning. Feeling any better?

DM - [offscreen] What do you think?

Methos - I think maybe you got what you deserved.

DM - [offscreen]You and your Watcher friends. Dawson's becoming a real pain in the ass.

Methos - Yes, well, I'll pass that along the line.

DM - [offscreen] You do that!

Methos - MacLeod, you need help.

DM - [offscreen] I don't need your help, my son.

Methos - Have you tried looking in a mirror recently?

DM - [offscreen] Yes, and I like what I saw.

Methos - Duncan, I know what happened. First Coltec, now you. This is a Dark Quickening. This is not who you are.

DM - [offscreen] No? Then maybe it's who I should be. What you see is what you get.

Peter - I can help you. No, um... [snaps his fingers]

Director - [offscreen] Line.

Peter - [remembers the line] You can f--

[Woman offscreen interrupts, starting to read off the line. Peter waves her silent.]

Director - [offscreen] Hold it. Ready? Action.

Methos - You can still fight this. I can help you if you'll let me.

DM - [offscreen] And why should you do that?

Methos - [backing away from candelabrum being pointed at him] Because of who you are. You are too important to lose!

DM - [stares at candle flames a moment, then throws candelabrum aside] I'm not lost.

Methos - [moves closer] Duncan, listen to me... This may be your last chance to be saved.

DM - There's just one problem. [turns suddenly, swings katana up against Methos's neck] I don't want to be saved.

Methos - You can't do this.

DM - No? [raises katana]

Methos - This is holy ground! Whatever evil is inside you, you cannot do this.

[DM shoves Methos away, walks to exit, looks back.]

Director - [offscreen] Cut. Great. Okay, now--

Inside chapel

[Camera wide-shot of chapel interior.]

Methos - This may be your last chance to be saved.

DM - There's just one problem. [Adrian holds his hand out to the side. Magic Sword Pocket Guy hands him the katana from offscreen. Adrian tucks the sword inside his coat, under his arm.] There's just one problem. [turns suddenly, swings katana up against Methos's neck] I don't want to be saved.

Methos - You can't do this.

DM - No?

Methos - This is holy ground! [DM raises katana.] Whatever evil is inside you, you cannot do this.

Inside chapel

[Man with clapboard snaps clapboard.]

[Camera angle close-up on DM lying unconscious.]

Director - [offscreen] Action.

[DM gasps, reviving.]

Methos - [offscreen] And welcome back to our younger viewers.

DM - [jumps to his feet, kicks over a tall candlestick, turns to Methos] What do you think?

Methos - I think maybe you got what you deserved.

DM - Oh, you and your Watcher friends. Dawson's becoming a real pain in the ass.

Methos - [offscreen] Yeah, well, I'll pass that along.

DM - You do that!

Methos - [offscreen] You need help, MacLeod.

DM - [picks up shorter candlestick from a ledge] I don't need your help, my son.

Methos - [offscreen] Have you tried looking in a mirror recently?

DM - Yes, I have, and I like what I saw.

Methos - [offscreen] I know what's happened, MacLeod. First Coltec, now you. This is a Dark Quickening. [DM slams candlestick back down on ledge.] It's not who you are.

DM - No? Well, maybe it's who I should be. You see who I am-- What you see is what you get.

Methos - [offscreen] You can fight this. I can help you if you'll let me.

DM - [grabs candelabrum from stand, points it at Methos] And why would you want to do that?

Methos - [offscreen] Because of who you are. You are too important to lose!

DM - [stops, turns away, then throws candelabrum aside] I'm not lost.

Methos - [offscreen] Duncan, listen to me... This could be your last chance to be saved.

DM - There's just one problem. [turns suddenly, swings katana up against Methos' neck] I don't want to be saved.

Methos - You can't do this.

DM - No? Why?

[DM swings Methos around; camera view is now on Methos.]

Methos - This is holy ground! Whatever evil is inside you, you cannot do this.

[DM shoves Methos away. Methos reacts to DM leaving.]

Director - [offscreen] Cut. Great, guys.

~Filming the Leaf Blower Quickening~

Burns's Chateau

[Camera opens on a tree trunk. Leaf blower is audible offscreen.]

Methos - [offscreen] No! [runs to tree, puts his back against the trunk. Leaves start blowing toward/around him. Some apparently end up in his mouth, based on the occasional spluttering. Then the smoke machine starts pumping billows of smoke at him. Cue both spluttering AND some coughing before Peter continues reacting to the nearby Quickening.]

~Extended Scenes:
At the Holy Spring~

Gillian Horvath - The complete version of this scene explains where Methos got the MacLeod sword and why Rachel MacLeod shows up at the end of the episode. Keep your eye out for director Dennis Berry.

Woods near ancient holy site

[Man with clapboard snaps clapboard, walks offscreen.]

Director - [offscreen] Action.

[Volvo starts driving toward camera.]

Methos - [parks Volvo] Okay, we're here. [Both get out of car.] There's a holy spring here. It's been lost since the seventh century. [takes bag out of car] No one knows it's here. Some say... [drops bag on ground] ...it's magic.

DM - [turns suddenly & punches him in the face] I can't do this.

Methos - Fight it. Fight it like you have fought all the evil in your life, because that is what you are up against. [reaches into back seat of Volvo] Remember who you are. [holds up Ian MacLeod's claymore wrapped in Macleod tartan] Remember this.

Woman - [offscreen, reading Ian MacLeod's voice-over line] I raised you to hold this, no matter the cost. You're a Chieftain's son. [reading Mary's voice-over line, still offscreen] Take it. Take it, I say! You are Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod.

Methos - It belongs in your hand. Take it.

DM - [echoing his lines from the Homeland flashback] I cannae. I have no right.

Methos - Who has more right?

[Slowly, hesitating, DM reaches out and takes it. As he holds it up--]

Methos - [relieved] Good. I had a helluva job convincing the woman who had it to give it to me.

DM - There's nothing here.

Methos - It's not out here. [closes car door, picks up rappelling gear from back, nods toward ground] It's down there. [tosses gear to DM]

[Camera follows DM as he walks away from car into the woods... past Dennis Berry.]

Director - Je veux que tu es lui dans le champ aussi tout le temps quand tu parles. [I want you to be in the field of vision all the time when you speak.]

Gillian Horvath - When you're watching this scene of Methos and MacLeod heading for the well, you need to know about some scenes that were filmed but not aired with "Revelation 6.8" in Season Five. Methos threw Kronos down a well and grated it shut. So it's not hard to imagine he's got rebar and power tools in the car this time.

Woods near ancient holy site

[Man with clapboard snaps clapboard. Camera swings up to look at sky through the trees.]

Director - [offscreen] Action.

[DM walks through the woods carrying the sword and a coil of climbing rope. Methos follows him, carrying the bag. DM stops, kneels beside a brick-lined hole in the ground. Camera pans down to look into the hole, then back up. DM takes off his coat, tosses it aside. Methos hands him the end of the rope. Adrian wraps the rope around his neck, mimes choking himself.]

~Filming the Swordfight~

Gillian Horvath - The final swordfight between Duncan and Duncan's dark side was achieved using no special effects whatsoever, just two identical sweaters. Adrian and his stunt double both learned both sides of the fight, and then they filmed it multiple times, switching sides between takes. It's a testament to everyone involved that the fight is convincing even in dailies before the editors had a chance to work their magic. When I first watched this footage, I had to remind myself that there were not two Duncans or two Adrians on the screen.

Cavern

Director - [offscreen] Action.

Evil DM - [standing in brick archway of underground structure, sing-song:] Here's Duncan! Yes, it's me. But this time, I'm not going away. [twirls katana, attacks. Double defends himself with the claymore. Evil DM stabs at Double.] Oh, that must hurt. [laughs, continues fight, 'cuts' Double across the back] Give up. We're one. Inseparable. You can't kill what you've become. [Fight continues.] Give up, Dunkie. [swings katana at Double's head, bows, follows Double into other chamber. Double is crouched by pool.] Stand up. [Double stands, goes to swing sword at DM.] Nope. Thrust. Thrust. [Double thrusts claymore at Evil DM, fight continues.] It'll be the end of everything. [Fight continues.] Ahhh, you can't kill me. I know your thoughts. ['stabs' Double badly] You're nothing. [raises katana for final blow, holds pose]

Director - [offscreen] Cut!

Cavern

[Man with clapboard snaps clapboard.]

Director - [offscreen] Action.

Adrian - [counting down quietly] One, two, three

[Fight begins. Double 'stabs' Good DM badly. Fight continues. Double 'cuts' Good DM across the back. Fight continues. Double 'cuts' Good DM on the cheek.]

Director - [offscreen] All clear. Great, guys.

4x15: Promises

~It's "Al Deneb"~

Embassy Ball, night

Kassim - Ruler upon ruler. Emirs, governors, presidents. Some have been fair men, some even good men. But-- Some even like Hamad. But none have been fit to rule. None have been of the House of Al Nedeb.

Adrian - You did it again.

Ricco - F*beep*!

Adrian - He said it again.

Embassy Ball, night

Kassim - Emirs, governors, presidents. Some have been fair men, some even good men. And some have been like Hamad. But none have been fit to rule. None have been of the House of Al Didab.

Adrian - Al Didab?

[Ricco laughs.]

Embassy Ball, night

Kassim - And some have been like Hamad. But none have been fit to rule. None have been of the House of Al Dinab.

Adrian - [starts laughing] Sorry.

Ricco - [laughs] *beep*.

Outside police station

Director - [offscreen] Action!

[Man runs along sidewalk lined by hedge wall, past parked car, and is picked up by waiting motorcyclist. Adrian is right behind them when they drive off.]

Arian - [looks at camera, shrugs] Could've caught him. [laughs]

~Filming the Swordfight~

Gillian Horvath - Guest star Ricco Ross was Adrian Paul's friend and fellow martial artist.

Inside empty Moroccan restaurant

Kassim - --in exchange for his.

DM - [takes off his jacket] Here. Fine. You want my life? I'm here. But you're going to have to take it. Sword! [holds out his hand as Magic Sword Pocket Guy runs in to give him the katana]

Man - [offscreen] Shirt comes off? Af-- Yes.

Inside empty Moroccan restaurant

Director - [offscreen] And... action.

DM - [blocks Kassim's sword] Let it go, Kassim. I'm not your enemy. [Kassim takes off his shirt. They start fight again. Ricco misses a move.] Stop, stop, take it from there. Take it from there. Same place.

Director - [offscreen] And... action.

[Fight restarts, stops.]

Adrian - Let me have it. Let me have it. Same place.

Director - [offscreen] And... ac--

[Fight restarts, stops.]

Adrian - No. Cut me on the shoulder.

Director - [offscreen] And... action.

[Fight restarts, follows through Kassim cutting DM on the shoulder.]

Inside empty Moroccan restaurant

Man with clapboard - Twenty-nine oh two, take five [snaps clapboard]

[Ricco runs through swordfight moves with Adrian, then they move into position.]

Director - [offscreen] And... action.

[They go partway through the moves, go back to starting positions.]

Director - [offscreen] And... action.

[They restart the sequence, getting much farther before Ricco hesitates.]

Adrian - {Cut it} right there. Put it right there. Put it right there. [Ricco moves his sword to indicated position, Adrian continues with moves.] Step back! Get back! {??} [The combatants separate.]

Director - [offscreen] Cut.

Adrian - Still got-- You've got a little bent sword there.

Inside empty Moroccan restaurant

Man with clapboard - Twenty-nine oh three, take one [snaps clapboard]

Adrian - So for a couple {??} to the head, right?

Ricco - Hold on, wait. Let me get my shit together. What are we doing now?

Adrian - Just {??} this part. [ducks as if dodging a blow]

Ricco - All right.

Adrian - Just like that. Okay?

Director - [offscreen] And... action.

[DM ducks under Kassim's blade. They exchange a few blows and separate, hold for a moment, then re-engage.]

Adrian - Back! [Fight stops.] You went down, baby, you went down. Start from the same spot. Very same spot.

Ricco - [moves into starting position] Here?

Adrian - Yeah, fuck it. Doing it again, that side. [motions with left hand] Cut across my head.

Ricco - Ready?

Director - [offscreen] And... action.

[DM ducks under Kassim's blade.]

Adrian - Again. From that side to this side.

Director - [offscreen] And... action.

[DM ducks under Kassim's blade. They exchange a few blows and separate, hold for a moment, then re-engage. They close to grapple, Adrian stops.]

Adrian - No. {??} From the same spot.

Director - [offscreen] Action.

[Fight restarts, stops.]

Adrian - No. You've got to come straight down on me {??}.

Director - [offscreen] And cut.

4x16: Methuselah's Gift

~With Catlike Tread~

Gillian Horvath - How many times do we have to be told, never work with children or animals? I don't know what we were thinking in the script when we said, "Methos tosses the cat at Stern to distract him." You can't throw a cat! Not more than once, anyway. The call sheet for this day actually had the notation, "False cat only or we will hear from BB," meaning Brigitte Bardot, who is an animal rights activist in Europe.

Inside Watcher HQ - hallway, night

[Handler holds cat in place on carpet. Then they must have placed something tasty on the carpet because the cat is alone, sniffing at a spot on the floor. Handler calls to the cat from offscreen and clicks his tongue & cat runs toward camera and out of frame.]

Director - [offscreen] Good. Cut. Thank you.

Inside Watcher HQ - hallway, night

Director - [offscreen] Action.

[Cat meows offscreen. The cat "jumps" (is thrown) onto a side table, knocking a metal canister off.]

Methos - [lifts cat off side table] Come here. [Cat struggles.] Oh, don't-- d-d-d-d [Methos drops it.] Ah! Oh! [turns, hisses:] I'm trying to get the cat! [crouches to reach for cat under table] Come on, mate, come on. It's okay. [continues in this vein as he picks the cat up again, walks off with the cat, muttering under his breath:] Bloody hell.

Director - [offscreen] Cut.

Inside Watcher HQ - hallway, night

Director - [offscreen] Step into the light a little bit, Peter, 'cause you're a little low. Drop your head. Drop down, Peter, drop down. [Peter crouches, moving into better lighting.] That's it. Okay. {Se bon?} Just do the line, Peter, right now.

Methos - Nice kitty. Nice kitty. Here, pud, come on.

Director - [offscreen] {??} Wait, wait.

[Camera swings up to barely catch the cat jumping on the table (looking less like it was thrown this time).]

Methos - Nice kitty. No... don't... careful, careful... [pokes/pushes cat] Go, get-- [makes a grab in the vicinity of the cat without coming close to actually grabbing the cat, knocking the metal canister off and rocking the entire table. The cat runs along the table away from him.]

Director - [offscreen] Stop the cat. Stop the cat. Stop the cat.

Methos - Kitty, kitty, here kitty. Come on, baby, come on. Come to Methos, it's okay. [picks up cat]

Voice - [offscreen, Amanda's line] What are you doing?

Methos - [hisses back] I'm trying to get the cat!

Director - [offscreen] Okay, cut. Cut.

Inside Watcher HQ - hallway, night

Director - [offscreen] Action.

[Camera angle close on Amanda's face, out of focus.]

Stern - [from behind her] One move, I shoot.

Amanda - [turns, sees Stern, goes offscreen as camera stays with Stern] Well, aren't you the bright boy. [offscreen sound of running footsteps] If it isn't the idiot. You know, I'd really like to, uh, stay and chat with you boys, but I have to go.

Stern - I can't let you leave with the crystal.

Amanda - [offscreen] Then shoot me.

[Peter pops up briefly behind Stern, mimes throwing something on his shoulder, disappears again, laughs. Stern cracks a brief grin.]

Director - [offscreen] Continue, continue, continue. {??}

Methos - [offscreen] Stern! [wrestles with Stern] Go! Go!

Stern - Get after her, you idiot!

Director - [offscreen] Cut.

~Alternate Takes:
Santorini~

Gillian Horvath - This fabulous performance of one of my favorite scenes only gets better when you see multiple versions of it. And the final episode had to be looped and some of the original roughness is lost.

Trainyard

[Man with clapboard snaps clapboard.]

Director - [offscreen] And... action.

[Methos holds his sword at Amanda's neck (offscreen).]

Methos - You fool!

Amanda - [offscreen] At least I don't betray my friends. Who's next? MacLeod? You going to kill him next? Just go ahead and kill me if she means so much to you.

Methos - [swings sword up for killing stroke, holds it there a moment, fighting his emotions, then throws it aside & drags Amanda to her feet] You understand nothing. Three weeks ago, we were standing on a beach on Santorini watching the sun rise on the Mediterranean... Now she is lying in a hospital in Switzerland breathing through a tube. You think it takes courage to do what we do? You think it takes courage to face another Immortal with a sword, knowing that only one of you is going to live? You try being her! You try living one year of your life knowing that your time is running out and that you are just wasting away! Knowing that when the final fight comes, you will lose! You have no choice, there is no training, there's no tricks, nothing is gonna help you. That is how it is for them. So little time for them to see anything or do anything. [turns away, picks up his sword]

Amanda - Methos!

[Methos turns around, points sword at her, lowers sword.]

Amanda - [quietly, moving toward him] I'm sorry. I'm sorry. [pulls him into a hug] Come on. [leads him away]

Trainyard

Director - [offscreen] Ready, and... Action!

[Methos holds his sword at Amanda's neck (offscreen).]

Methos - You fool!

Amanda - At least I don't betray my friends. Who's next? MacLeod? Huh? You going to kill him too? Just go ahead and kill me if she means so much to you.

Methos - [swings sword up for killing stroke, holds it there a moment, fighting his emotions, then throws it aside & drags Amanda to her feet] You understand nothing, right? Three weeks ago, we were standing on the beach on Santorini watching the sun rise on the Mediterranean... Now she is in hospital in Switzerland breathing through a tube. Amanda - Methos!

Methos - [spins around, pointing sword at her] What!?

Amanda - [quietly, moving toward him] I'm sorry. I'm sorry. [pulls him into a hug. Methos howls in grief, then collects himself.] Come on, let's go. [escorts him out]

4x17: The Immortal Cimoli

~Deleted Scene:
Cimoli's Last Stand~

Gillian Horvath - Cimoli's final fight was actually filmed, but we decided in editing that it was better left to the imagination.

Las Vegas - Casino parking garage

Danny - [offscreen] I've been expecting you.

Vrej - Do we know each other?

Danny - [offscreen] No. But I knew you'd come. [parries a few blows, then holds up his hand] Doesn't matter. I did it. I'm the Immortal Cimoli. I always will be. [turns his back]

[Vrej swings at Danny's unprotected neck, stops before connecting.]

Director - [offscreen] {??}

~Get Out of My Light~

Inside barge

[Adrian & Liz lying in bed next to each other, Adrian closest to camera.]

Adrian - [to Liz] {Said} get out of MY light.

Liz - Get out of my light. [laughs] Get out of my light. There you go, get out of my light.

Director - [offscreen] And... action.

Amanda - What are you thinking about?

DM - Danny.

Amanda - I must be losing my touch.

DM - No, you're not losing your touch. [kisses her shoulder] What are you thinking about?

Amanda - Moscow.

DM - [groans] I must be losing MY touch.

Amanda - No, seriously. I mean, do you think I'm nuts? [off DM's look] I mean about Marco's offer. You know, the Moscow circus has the best audiences in the whole world.

DM - Have a nice time.

Amanda - Oh, but we could have so much fun together.

DM - Well, I'll see you when you get back.

Amanda - I think you need a little bit more coaxing.

DM - Be my guest. [pokes baguette out from under covers, pointed at his face. Liz doesn't notice it.]

[They are interrupted by knocking at the door.]

Man (not Crispin) - [offscreen] MacLeod? MacLeod, open up!

Amanda - Oh, God, the kid's got timing. I'll give him that. [sees the baguette, starts laughing]

Inside barge

Director - [offscreen] Action.

Danny - [offscreen] This guy just showed up at my trailer. Pulled a sword. He said he's gonna take my head... Sorry.

Amanda - Oh, that's okay, Danny. We talk about you any-- Oh, *beep*.

Adrian - That's not in the dialogue, you know.

Liz - Sorry. "We talk about you all the time anyway. You might as well be here in person." Okay.

Adrian - That's good. You've got it right now?

Liz - Yeah.

Adrian - [to camera] This is good. She's ready.

Liz - Okay.

Adrian - [to camera] And ready, and... [pulls sheet up over his head, lowers sheet]

Director - [offscreen] Action.

Danny - [offscreen] This guy just showed up at my trailer. Pulled a sword. He said he's gonna take my head...

[Adrian & Liz crack up laughing.]

Danny - [offscreen] This guy just showed up at my trailer. Pulled a sword. He said he's gonna take my head...

Adrian - What are you laughing at? [starts laughing]

Danny - [offscreen] {??} Sorry, sorry, sorry.

Inside barge

Director - [offscreen] And action.

Danny - [offscreen] This guy just showed up-- [Adrian & Liz have already started laughing.] Oh, sorry. It's my fault.

Inside barge

Director - [offscreen] Action.

Danny - [offscreen] This guy just showed up at my trailer. Pulled a sword. [Liz starts laughing.] That wasn't me.

[Adrian makes a face at the camera.]

~Filming the Quickening~

Arena

[Voices can be heard speaking offscreen but the echoes in the chamber are such that what they are saying is not identifiable. Adrian is standing in the center of the arena, which has been filled with ground-hugging smoke. Someone carries away the smoke machine that was sitting just inside the arena entrance.]

Director - [offscreen] And action!

[Fireworks go off around the rim of the arena, sending smoke billowing upwards in the center, mostly obscuring Adrian. Nine seconds later, the smoke has cleared enough to make out his silhouette as he fall to his knees. Shortly after, a voice again says something offscreen and applause can be heard.]

4x18: Through a Glass, Darkly

~Just a Couple of Guys with Smoke Machines~

Cemetery

Director - [offscreen] Action.

[Methos steps into view at top of stone steps. Clouds of smoke roll past. He sighs, sniffs loudly. Someone starts giggling offscreen.]

Peter - {??}

Director - [offscreen] Okay, don't cut. Once more. Hold it. [Peter ducks back out of view.] Stand by. [Snorting and throat-clearing can be heard over Peter's mic.] And action.

Methos - [walking with DM] You know, I knew Alexa was dying. Every moment we were together, everywhere we went, I knew. And yet, when she finally closed her eyes, I was surprised.

DM - You know, the Navajo have a saying: "The spirit lives as long as someone who lives remembers you."

Methos - Aren't you a little young to be so smart? CUT [Both look around, reacting to unheard 'buzz'. DM starts walking down side path.] MacLeod.

DM - Just looking.

Peter - [mutters to himself] Please, not now. [runs after him] Duncan... Come on. It's just a couple of guys we smoke with.

~Deleted Scene:
On the Tunnel Stairs~

Inside deserted building

Man with clapboard - [offscreen] --seven, take three. [snaps clapboard]

Director - [offscreen] Action!

Methos - [follows DM into interior] MacLeod, I'm gonna wait outside, okay?

DM - Okay. [continues down steps toward camera]

~A Little More Paranoia Please~

Alley near cemetery

Director - [offscreen] Action!

DM - I don't understand. It was as if he didn't know me, he didn't know himself, or what he was doing.

Methos - You should be more paranoid.

DM - What are you talking about?

Methos - [scoffs] Cochrane runs out screaming bloody murder. Okay, how do you react? You're confused, you're off balance, you're distracted. Maybe that was what he wanted.

DM - You don't trust anybody, do you?

Methos - No, I find it safer to make a not to make a no kind of habit of it. Present company excepted.

DM - If he wanted to face me, one of us would be dead. Warren Cochrane never walked away from a battle in his life. [looks around, points at tree trunk next to him. Camera zooms in on the trunk he is tapping with his finger. Laughter offscreen.]

~Deleted Scene:
F. Braun McCash~ (sic)

Gillian Horvath - In the final episode, Swordmaster F. Braun McAsh's appearance as the inkeeper is cut to just one line. "Gentleman, dinner is served."

Flashback - Normandy, 1786 - inside French inn, evening

Director - [offscreen] Camera! Action!

[Cochrane & DM enter inn, walk into dining hall.]

Cochrane - Innkeeper, we're to meet a gentleman traveler here. His name is Charles.

Innkeeper - [scoffs] Some gentleman.

Cochrane - [pulls his knife, threatens innkeeper with it] Aye, that's right. He IS a gentleman. Say it. Say it again.

DM - [leans in toward innkeeper] I'd say it if I were you. This time, mean it.

Innkeeper - Gentle. Man.

DM - There. That was good, wasn't it? Mm. Not bad. [slaps Innkeeper on the back as Cochrane sheaths his knife] Now, if you'd be so kind as to announce us.

[Innkeeper scurries out of dining hall & up the stairs.]

DM - [follows with Cochrane to dining hall entrance] A knife to the throat does wonders, Warren, but it's a little less than subtle.

Cochrane - The fool has no idea who he has under his roof. [sighs] We're about to change the course of history, MacLeod.

Innkeeper - [announcing from offscreen] Charlie!

[Charlie comes down staircase to meet them.]

4x20: Till Death

~Deleted Scene:
The Slave Boy~

Gillian Horvath - It's a deleted scene between Duncan and Methos. Need I say more?

EXT. QUAI DE LA TOURNELLE - WALK AND TALK - DAY
(actually, 2 parked cars somewhere that looks industrial but doesn't seem to match the EDF location)

[DM has apparently offered to store stuff from the flooded bookstore at his barge, based on the end of the second clip in this section.]

Peter - {??} [muttering something under his breath]

Director - [offscreen] And action!

DM - Here. [hands Methos a bag from back of Volvo]

Methos - I'm telling you, MacLeod, it's a bad idea. Stay out of other people's domestic disputes. [carries bag to DM's Citroën]

Adrian - Give me a minute. Come here a minute.

Peter - What? [returns to back of Volvo]

Adrian - Give me that bag back. Start it again.

Director - [offscreen] Okay, hold it.

[Cameraman, who had been moving forward, backs up.]

Adrian - {??} [Peter laughs.] You stand there and talk to me about it.

Director - [offscreen] Ready, and... action!

Methos - It's a bad idea, MacLeod. You stay out of other people's domestic disputes. [carries duffle bag to DM's Citroën] You'll live longer that way.

DM - Oh, I guess you're talking from experience, huh?

Methos - Always. [puts bag in back seat of Citroën] Rome, 34 A.D.... There was a senator and his wife and this slave boy...

DM - [puts more bags in back of Citroën] Oh, I get it! Now you're the wise old bachelor.

Methos - [reappears from behind Volvo carrying a small black suitcase, holding it on its side] Works for me. [DM tries to take case from him.] Ah-dh-dh-dh. [carefully carries case to Citroën & slides it onto back seat]

DM - What am I supposed to do? Huh? Let them throw away a three-hundred-year-old relationship? Huh? They're perfect together. [transfers another small suitcase between the cars]

Methos - Yeah, well, they said that about Sonny and Cher. Love is magic, MacLeod. When it's gone, it's gone. [hands cardboard box to DM]

DM - I'm telling you, it's not gone. [adds box to pile in Citroën]

Methos - And I'm telling you, you get stuck in the middle of this, they'll blame you whatever happens.

DM - Yeah. Well, I've got to try.

Methos - Well, then exit one old bachelor, stage left. [Both go to their respective car's driver-side door.] Hey, you take care of that black box.

[DM gets into his Citroën. Methos sighs & gets in his Volvo, muttering to himself under his breath.]

Director - [offscreen] Cut.

Same as above

Man with clapboard - [offscreen] --take four. [snaps clapboard]

Adrian - I'll get a ball past you any fucking day.

[Peter chuckles.]

Director - [offscreen] Ready, and... Action.

Adrian - {??} [hands first duffle to Peter]

Director - [offscreen] Action.

Methos - You're making a terrible mistake, MacLeod. Stay out of other people's domestic disputes. You'll live longer that way. [puts bag in back seat of DM's Citroën]

DM - What, you're speaking from experience here? [puts more bags in back of Citroën]

Methos - Always. Rome, 34 AD. There was a senator and his wife and a slave boy. [DM tries to take black case from him.] Yah-dh-dh-dh.

DM - Oh, I get it. Now you're the wise old bachelor. [Methos carefully carries case to Citroën & slides it onto back seat.] What am I supposed to do? Let them throw away a three-hundred-year-old relationship? They're perfect together. [transfers another small suitcase between the cars]

Methos - They said that about Sonny and Cher. Love's magic, MacLeod. When it's gone, it's gone.

DM - Look, I'm telling you, it's not gone. [takes cardboard box from Methos]

Methos - And I'm telling you, you get stuck in the middle of this, they will blame you whatever happens. [as DM tries to peek at boxes, contents] It's a fax machine.

DM - What, are you moving in? [adds box to stack in car]. Look, I've got to try, Methos.

Methos - Well, then exit one old bachelor, stage left. [points at boxes in Citroën] You take care of that.

DM - Sure.

Methos - [not trusting him] Am I making a mistake here?

DM - No, look, there's no water damage in my barge. Yet. [Both of them get in their respective cars.]

Methos - {God.}

~Deleted Scene:
Fitz and Connor~

Gillian Horvath - This scene had to be trimmed for time, and we lost Fitz's story about Connor MacLeod.

Flashback - Chateau de Valicourt, 1796 - drawing room

[DM enters room to find Fitz shoving cookies in his pockets.]

DM - Perhaps you'd like to take them home in a bucket?

Fitz - [startles, dropping cookies on the floor] Angelina requested a private audience with me.

DM - She requested one with me.

Both - [size one another up] Hmph.

DM - I did not expect them to last this long.

Fitz - Neither did I. I gave them a month, two at the most. The poor girl, she just doesn't realize what she's missing.

DM - Ah, marriage is wasted on you, Fitzcairn.

Fitz - Who said anything about marriage? Still, you know, if I was going to, I would marry her in a second. I suppose Connor's coming too?

DM - No. He knew you'd be here.

Fitz - Simple misunderstanding.

DM - Oh! Wasn't it you that told Selene that he was a rogue?

Fitz - Well, yes...

DM - And that he would break her heart?

Fitz - Yes. Well, I meant it as a compliment.

DM - [disbelieving] A compliment?

Fitz - Yes. [DM scoffs.]

Gina - [calls from doorway] Duncan!

DM - Yes, Angelina?

~Drive Cam~

Gillian Horvath - On a big-budget production, driving scenes are filmed by attaching the picture car to a tow rig and driving it around the location while the actors in the car pretend to steer and concentrate on their performances. When the budget is lower, like on Highlander, you just strap the camera to the side of the car and the actors drive themselves.

Road near abandoned warehouse

Adrian - --one [snaps clapboard, sets it out of sight] Ready?

Gina - {??} [starts scene] But who is this other Immortal? Where did Robert meet him?

DM - [driving them to the warehouse] I don't know. [sighs] I think he's one of those young ones that likes to kill for sport. I think he's good.

Gina - You don't think he could actually win?

DM - Oh, I don't know. Robert didn't seem to have the old fire. It's as if... he had nothing to live for.

Adrian - We'll re-do it. We're stopping now.

Cécile - Yes, you're just in front of the camera, I think.

Adrian - [stops car] Okay, so let's cut. [looks into camera] Cut.

Road near abandoned warehouse

Adrian - Okay, ready?

Road near abandoned warehouse

Cécile - [holding clapboard] Twenty-six.

Adrian - [interrupts, points through front windshield] {He cut me in.} [laughs]

Cécile - Twenty-six on one, take three. [snaps clapboard, sets it out of sight, starts scene] But who is this other Immortal?

DM - I don't know. I think he's one of those young ones that kills for sport. I heard he was good.

Gina - You don't think he could actually win?

DM - I'm not sure. Robert didn't seem to have that old fire. It's as if he had nothing to live for.

Cécile - Again, but I forgot one line of mine.

Adrian - That's okay.

Cécile - Okay?

Adrian - Yes.

Cécile - Just after the--

Adrian - Just after the lights. [stops car again]

Cécile - "Where did Robert meet him?" [Car moves forward a bit. Adrian makes a face at camera.] Yes, there is another one.

Adrian - Another red light. We have to stop, ladies and gentlemen. This is what we do on our day off. [clears his throat] Ready? And... [starts car moving again] All right, wait for it, wait for it. Go. [guns the engine]

Gina - But who is this other Immortal? Where did Robert meet him?

DM - [driving them to the warehouse] I'm not sure. I think he's one of those young ones that kills for sport. [forgets his line] Let me do it again. Start it again. Sorry.

Cécile - Yeah. But who is it-- Excuse me. But who is-is this other-- Argh! But who is this other Immortal? Where did Robert meet him?

DM - [driving them to the warehouse] I don't know. [sighs] I think he's one of those young ones that kills for sport. I heard he was good.

Gina - You don't think he could actually win?

DM - I'm not sure. Robert didn't seem to have that old fire. It's as if... he had nothing to live for. [shrugs, turns car around corner]

Cécile - Can we do it again?

Adrian - Yes. Go. Go. [guns engine]

Gina - But who is this other Immortal? Where did Robert meet him?

DM - I'm not sure. I think he's one of those young ones that kills for sport. [sighs] I think he's good.

Gina - You don't think he could actually win?

DM - I don't know. Robert didn't seem to have the old fire. It's as if-- [sighs again] It's as if he had nothing to live for. [beat, turns to camera] And that's all, folks! See ya!

~The Teapot~

Gillian Horvath - The interior of the barge is an actual barge on the Seine, not a set on a sound stage, which means filming there is always subject to interruption by noisy neighbors. Also take a good look at Peter Wingfield's hand in this scene, which is faintly blue and somewhat oversized. He'd sprained it playing football -- that is, soccer -- and the splint only came off for filming. On other shows, if an actor is hurt, you can write an injury for the character into the show, but you can't really explain an Immortal with a sprained hand that hasn't healed.

Inside barge

[Clapboard snaps in front of camera, is taken away.]

Adrian - [mostly offscreen, holding teapot in front of Peter, singing something] {All around ??}

Peter - [holding a mug] {??} it's weird, haven't you?

Adrian - Huh? [stands]

Peter - [pointing at Adrian's mug] This-- This one. This one. No, get it out of the way of the f*beep*ng camera!

Adrian - [from offscreen, waves his mug between Peter's face and the camera] Oh, it's that one. You mean that's a problem for you? The teapot! [removes his mug from view, raises & lowers teapot] I'm a teapot.

Director - [offscreen] Ready, guys? And action.

Methos - [as DM pours tea for him] It's finally happened. You've lost your mind!

DM - [offscreen] Well, come on, Methos. You'd be doing them an incredible favor. [pours tea]

Methos - Read my lips. N. O.

DM - [offscreen] Okay, you'd be doing ME an incredible favor. [adds milk to Methos's mug]

Methos - Aw, now that's not fair. You're making it personal, now. You think that I'll -- I'll feel guilty when I say no? [DM holds out sugar bowl for him.] Well, forget it. [takes a sugar cube] I haven't felt guilt since the eleventh century. I don't even know these people.

DM - [offscreen] Yeah, well, that's why I'm asking you. All you have to do is act a little.

Methos - Do I look like an actor?

DM - [offscreen] Yeah! You've been with the Watchers for years, and no one ever suspected you. Don't you want to see Gina and Robert live happily ever after? [offers plate of cookies]

Methos - [takes a cookie] Yeah. But I want to see ME live happily ever after even more.

DM - [offscreen] Oh, come on, Methos. [stands up, moves behind couch] They won't even know who you are. You'll just be this mysterious Immortal who's coming after Robert's head. Look, Gina and Robert's marriage is in your hands. [as Methos turns to look at him, camera shifts to DM]

Methos - [offscreen] You're not listening to me. I don't give a damn about their marriage.

DM - Yeah, but I do!

Methos - [offscreen] Is it really that important to you?

DM - Yes, it's that important to me.

[Camera pans back down to Methos as he faces forward again.]

Methos - Okay, I do this for you... and you give me the barge.

DM - [offscreen] Right. Like you're serious.

Methos - Yeah, I'm serious. Hey, I need a place to live. That's the deal. Take it or leave it.

[If you pay attention, a boat motor can be heard growing steadily louder off camera.]

DM - [offscreen] Fine, if that's what it takes.

Methos - That's what it takes.

DM - [offscreen] Fine. Fine.

Methos - Good.

DM - [offscreen] Good.

Methos - Right.

DM - [offscreen] You'd better make it look good.

Methos - Like you say, darling, I'm an ACT-OR.

Director - [offscreen] Cut.

Peter - Do you have a lot of trouble with the neighbors like this?

~Ming, I Think~

Inside barge

[Man with clapboard snaps clapboard, ducks off camera.]

Director - [offscreen] Action.

[DM is unpacking a wooden crate, scattering straw everywhere.]

Methos - Hey! Enough with the mess. I have to live here.

Adrian - [innocently] Hmm. Sorry. [lifts Ming vase from crate, looks at it] What is this? This is a vase? It's a Ming vase, I think.

Peter - [agreeing] Yeah.

Adrian - It looks very pretty.

Peter - [agreeing] Yeah. Start that again?

Adrian - Yeah, maybe. [puts vase back in crate, piles straw back in on top of it] Excuse me.

Peter - There's days where you just look at something and you think, "What is this?"

Adrian - "What is this?"

Director - [offscreen] Okay, guys. Ready, guys? Let's go.

Adrian - I'm ready, Dennis. I'm so ready I could puke.

Peter - I'm ready when you is.

Director - [offscreen] And action.

[DM unpacks the wooden crate, scattering straw everywhere.]

Methos - Hey! Enough with the mess. I have to live here.

DM - [innocently] Oh, sorry. [lifts Ming vase from crate] This is my wedding present to them. Only one of six left in the world.

Methos - You know, when I was living in China, way back when, those things were a dime a dozen. If only I'd known then what I know now.

DM - Pity. So what are you going to get them? A toaster?

Peter - Well, you know, you were right. They are a unique couple-- I haven't got the *beep*ng keys in my pocket.

Adrian - [calls into mouth of vase] Hello, are the keys in there?

Inside barge

[Same take, camera close on Methos.]

Peter - Well, you know, you were right. They are a unique couple-- I haven't got the *beep*ng keys in my pocket.

Adrian - [offscreen] Hello, are the keys in there?

Peter - *beep* are the keys? I lost the keys to the boat.

Director - [offscreen] Okay, {??}.

Peter - Where's the keys?

Adrian - [offscreen] Oh, you mean these keys?

Peter - You have the f*beep*ng keys!

[Adrian laughs.]

4x21: Judgment Day

~The Mysterious Immortal~

Gillian Horvath - The fog-bound scene is something of a Highlander tradition, verging on an in-joke. As this scene was envisioned, MacLeod gets the buzz and follows an unknown Immortal into the nearby tunnel. There's just one problem. Who could possibly fail to recognize Methos's silhouette, especially in profile?

Quay by barge

Man with clapboard - [offscreen] --two, take one. [snaps clapboard]

[Camera zooms in on Peter standing in a cloud of smoke that almost completely obscures him.]

Director - [offscreen] Action!

[The smoke clears around Peter enough to see him better as he turns and walks back into the thicker smoke. DM appears from the side, following him.]

~"Nice Boat!"~

Gillian Horvath - Pay close attention to this alternate version of the scene in the tunnel. See if you can figure out why we didn't use it.

Quay by barge

Man with clapboard - [offscreen] {??} and one, take four. [snaps clapboard]

[Camera focuses in on Peter, leaning against side of tunnel.]

Adrian - [offscreen] Hello, hello, hello. [whistles] Oh.

Man - [offscreen] {??}

Director - [offscreen] Action. Go.

DM - [offscreen] I'm Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod.

Methos - Yes, I know that. [reacts to sword pointing at him]

DM - [offscreen] I WAS expecting someone else.

Methos - Not a close friend, I take it.

DM - [offscreen] Dawson came by the barge this morning. Someone grabbed him and threw him in a car.

Methos - Dawson? Why?

DM - [offscreen] I don't know. Maybe they're after me. Oh, damn him. What's he doing here?

Methos - I don't know. And I'm not gonna be able to find out. I'm leaving Paris. Something is going on with the Watchers. Security's intense. It's why I didn't come to the barge.

DM - Yeah, well, you're going to have to find out who's out there, Methos.

Methos - If I start asking questions, sooner or later, someone starts questioning me.

DM - You owe him. You think any other Watcher would have kept quiet about you being Methos? Or that in actual fact you're one of their researchers, Adam Pierson.

Methos - That was his choice.

DM - Yeah, I know it was. [gives him a look]

Methos - I'll find out what I can.

DM - Thanks. [leaves]

[Boat motor, inaudible sound of tour guide over loudspeaker and tourist whistling in the distance can be heard.]

Methos - [to himself] I spent years-- [starts laughing]

[More inaudible tour guide talking on boat.]

Adrian - [offscreen] Just loop it.

Peter - {??}

Gillian Horvath - Yep. Nice boat. It's a Highlander in-joke dating back to "Prodigal Son" in season two. The passing bateau-mouche that makes it impossible to keep filming.

Quay by barge

[Same take, different camera angle. Tourists on boat audible in background.]

Methos - I'll find out what I can.

DM - Thanks. [leaves]

[Lights of tour boat can be seen behind Peter as the boat passes by, the tour guide's voice becoming louder.]

Methos - [to himself] I spent years-- [starts laughing]

Adrian - [offscreen] Just loop it.

Peter - {??}

~Extended Scene:
Pigeon Wrangling, Sneaking, Debating~

Park

[Handler sets 3 pigeons on ground. Camera focuses on pigeon, then pans up to Methos sitting on a park bench, feeding pigeons.]

Methos - [as DM approaches] They're definitely watching your barge. Phone's probably tapped, as well.

DM - Who is? [at Methos' silence] Methos.

Methos - It's not an Immortal. It's the Watchers.

DM - Dawson was taken by his own people? Why? Where is he?

Methos - I wasn't able to find out.

DM - You're a Watcher, damn it. You should be able to find out.

Methos - [glances around them] No. I'm not. I'm an anonymous researcher called Adam Pierson, and THAT is how I would like to keep it. The rumor is that the Watcher Tribunal are putting him on trial for treason. [leaves]

Outside New Watcher HQ

Methos - I'm a Watcher. I'm supposed to be here... Like you said, I owe him one.

DM - Glad to hear it. Come on, let's figure a way out. [sighs in annoyance]

Peter - Out of where?

Adrian - I dunno. I have no idea.

[Peter laughs, resets.]

Methos - Okay. Like you say, I owe him one. [Adrian misses his cue, just looks at him.] Shall we go?

Adrian - "I thought you said I owe him one"? Oh, THAT part. I'm sorry. Go. I'm sorry.

Director - [offscreen] Do it again. Ready, and... Action.

Methos - Okay. Like you said, I owe him one.

DM - Glad to hear it. Come on, let's figure a way inside.

[They take off together, dodging from tree to tree.]

Lyon street, night

Director - [offscreen] Action.

DM - [paces past Methos's parked car, turns, paces the other direction] Damn him. Setting himself up like that, waiting to die. He'll go down without a word.

Methos - Well, it seems like that's what he wants.

DM - What did he want me to do? Just stay there and die with him?

Methos - Well, I wouldn't.

DM - Right.

Methos - You should take a vacation, MacLeod. I hear New Zealand's very nice this time of year.

DM - You did your best. I did my best. If he wants to just sit there like a lamb going to the slaughter, then let him. There's nothing else to do. I'm not going back for him.

Methos - No. Wouldn't be sensible. The truth is we all die when our time comes.

DM - It's not his time. [beat] Shall I go back for him?

Peter - I've got nothing more to say.

Adrian - Oh, neither have I. [leaves]

~Extended Scene:
Pierson for the Defense~

Gillian Horvath - Because Peter Wingfield was a regular character on the radio drama "The Archers" in England, we weren't sure that he'd be available to us for filming the Watcher Tribunal interiors. We had an alternate version of the story ready to go, in which MacLeod and Dawson found a package from Methos in Dawson's room, which had this Chronicle and a note with it. "How'd he get in here?" "Well, he's pretty good at being invisible when he wants to be." And then Dawson would have delivered the speech that Adam now makes to the Tribunal. Fortunately, we WERE able to work out the schedule. Keep an eye on Methos as he's being ushered out. You can see he doesn't want to leave that book behind.

New Watcher HQ - Tribunal room in basement

Shapiro - [offscreen] All right.

Joe - [under his breath, offscreen] Pierson for the defense. Perfect.

Shapiro - [offscreen] Now what the hell is so important? Who the hell are you?

Methos - My name is Pierson. Adam Pierson. I'm a researcher.

Tarvise - [offscreen] We don't need the opinions of researchers.

Methos - Maybe not. But I'm not here to give you an opinion. I'm here to give you this. [hands over something offscreen] I found it in an Italian library, misfiled as a fairy tale. It is the private journal of a Watcher. A Methos Watcher.

Tarvise - Watchers don't keep journals.

Methos - Well, this one had to. You see, he found out a great deal about his subject. And the more he discovered, the more he came to like him. To -- to admire him, even.

Shapiro - [offscreen] I know there's a point somewhere here, son.

Methos - They became friends. But because of our rules, he couldn't put that in his report. Think about it. The man knew Methos! What stories they must have shared, entire histories that we would now know, if we didn't force men like him, and Joe Dawson, to hide what they have discovered. And how many more? How much more knowledge have we lost? Isn't that why Watchers exist -- to observe the truth and record it? I say let friendship thrive. Let him record what he discovers. Learn.

Shapiro - [offscreen] Are you through?

Methos - Yes, sir.

Shapiro - [offscreen] Then it's time to leave.

[Methos looks toward Chronicle, makes a motion to reach for it but is escorted away.]

4x22: One Minute to Midnight

~Deleted Scene:
Jacob Catches a Hunter~

Flashback - Europe, 1992 - forest clearing, night

Director - [offscreen] Action!

[Group of men walk toward camera through dark forest. Man with flashlight & gun (Emile) is grabbed from behind by Jacob. Jacob grabs the Hunter's arm so his gun is shoved against his own neck.]

Jacob - [as man tries to get away] No, no. You're going to tell me things. Like who you are. What you are. And why you killed Irena. [notices Watcher tattoo on Emile's wrist] What is this? Who the hell are you?

[Emile screws up his face, pulls the trigger of his gun, falls to the ground with a cry. Camera pans down to Emile lying dead on the ground. Jacob runs off.]

Director - [offscreen] Cut!

~Chicken Wrangling~

Flashback - Europe, 1847 - Gypsy camp

DM - --stay here for a few more weeks. [dodges around Gypsy women, chased by Jacob]

Jacob - Yes, well, that is because you are a Highlander. You see, us Gypsies are never at home unless we're traveling. [chases DM around wagon] Pass me the wine, MacLeod. The land's a sea, MacLeod, and we are its sailors.

[DM tosses Jacob the canteen he was holding, bends over.]

Jacob - No, no, no, no, no.

DM - Here, have a chicken. [grabs a chicken from the ground]

Jacob - No, no, no, no, no.

[DM cackles, tosses chicken at Jacob, who ducks away.]

~Jacob is Hung~

Flashback - Europe, 1847 - village street

Man with clapboard - [offscreen] Take two. [snaps clapboard]

Director - [offscreen] Okay, ready? And...

Man - [offscreen, French] {Du vous j'ai plait.}

[End of rope 'noose' falls off of Jacob's neck.]

Man - [offscreen] Shit.

Director - [offscreen, as man moves into view to fix the noose] Don't cut. Ne coupez pas restez. {??} (don't cut, stay) [Man finally finishes fixing the noose.] Okay, {clap the ??}. Ready, and... Action!

[DM 'cuts' noose rope with knife, carries Jacob's body over his shoulder, walks to street.]

Man - [offscreen] {Leave us!}

[Three young boys run into view, taunting him by bleating like lambs.]

DM - Get away with ye, or I'll put a Gypsy curse and your tongues will fall off. And not only your tongues!

[The boys run away. DM carries Jacob away from village.]

~The Methos and Joe Show~

Outside funeral home

Joe - [jumps as a hand lands on his shoulder] Damn it! Don't do that.

Methos - Look at that. Watchers, afraid of being killed by Immortals, holed up in a funeral home. Is it just me, or is there some cosmic irony in that?

Joe - I think it's just you, because I'm not laughing. Are you trying to give me a coronary?

Methos - I'm just making a point. If Shapiro's men see you, they're going to kill you, man.

Joe - Yeah. Maybe.

Methos - Is everyone crazy? Did you hear what I said?

Joe - I have got to convince Shapiro that it's Jacob killing Watchers and not MacLeod.

Methos - Okay, well, see, to do that, you have to talk to him. They're not going to let you near the guy.

Joe - No. Not on my own... Adam.

Methos - No. [Joe gives him a look.] Give me one good reason.

Joe - Revenge.

Methos - Gave it up.

Joe - Well, then save my ass.

Methos - We're not that close.

Joe - Well, then how about MacLeod? The Watchers want to kill him, and they eventually will kill him, unless Shapiro learns the truth about who killed his son.

Methos - But then they go after Jacob. Look, the guard is armed. There's probably half a dozen of them on the roof.

Joe - Yeah, not to mention the password that we don't know about.

Methos - I wouldn't worry about the password. They're going to shoot you on sight anyway.

Joe - You know, I think I've had just about enough irony for one day. What we have to do is figure out a way to get inside.

Methos - Brilliant. You got any ideas?

Joe - Ironically enough, I do.

[They look at each other, start laughing.]

Outside funeral home

Joe - You know, I think I've had just about as much irony as I can take for one day. What we have to do is figure out a way to get inside.

Methos - Brilliant. You have any ideas?

Joe - Ironically enough... I do.

[They look at each other, look back at the funeral home, look back at each other again, start laughing.]

Director - [offscreen] Cut.

Outside funeral home

Joe - --out a way to get inside.

Methos - Brilliant. You got any ideas?

Joe - Ironically enough, I do.

Methos - [snorts but is facing away from the camera, manages to hold it together] You going to share it with me?

~Extended Scene:
Stalinist Turn~

Gillian Horvath - Because of the filming schedule of this episode and his obligations to the radio drama "The Archers", Peter Wingfield had to be brought back to Paris for one day to film this one scene in which he spoke two words... which were cut from the episode. Listen for this scene to take a surreal turn at the end.

Inside funeral home

[Joe & Methos enter.]

Shapiro - You can drop the hostage act, Joe. You won't shoot. Pierson's your friend.

Joe - Yeah, we were friends too, Jack. Didn't keep you from ordering my death.

Shapiro - Tell you what. Let's make a deal.

Joe - What kind of deal?

Shapiro - You turn in MacLeod, I let you live.

Joe - I've got a better deal, buddy. [points gun at Shapiro] I kill you instead of him.

Shapiro - Even if you kill me, Joe, you're not going to get out of here alive. You know that? One way or the other, you're in for life.

Joe - I really didn't come here to kill you, and I don't want to die. I came here to talk.

Shapiro - [re: the gun] You think that's going to change my mind?

Joe - Maybe. [holds the gun out. Shapiro takes it from him.] Just hear me out, Jack. Give me ten minutes. That's not too much to ask of an old friend.

Shapiro - [shrugs] I'll listen.

Joe - [turns to Methos] It's going to be alright.

Methos - You sure?

Joe - Okay, this organization has taken a definite Stalinist turn.

Shapiro - [offscreen, huffs a laugh] Yeah.

Joe - Now, when I signed on, it was as a Trotskyite. I have a real proletarian base going here.

Man - [offscreen] Vote! Vote!

Director - [offscreen] Cut!
