Tolkien - Dwarves

Dwarves

The Dwarves claim descent from Seven Fathers who lived in the First Age and as a result, are divided into seven Folk, each with its own King and ancestral halls. (When Sauron forged the Rings of Power, he made one ring for each of those seven Kings.) Dwarves are short, about 4 1/2 to 5 feet tall, but strong and hardy. Their average life span is about 250 years and if they married it was generally at the age of 100. The Dwarves are great miners and craftsmen of stone, metal, and jewels. They have their own language, 'Khuzdul', but it was secret and never spoken in public. The names by which they are known: 'Khazad' by themselves, 'Naugrim' by the Elves in the First Age, and 'Nogothrim' in the Third Age.

*Balin^#:

Son of Fundin, elder brother of Dwalin, and Dwarf of the House of Durin, he was King of Khazad-dûm from 2989-94. Balin was a follower of Thráin and later of Thorin. He accompanied Thráin on the journey in 2841 that cost him his life, and a century later he became a member of Thorin and Company. After the death of Smaug, he settled in Erebor, but in 2989 he left for Khazad-dûm and set up a dwarf colony there. Five years later he was slain there by an Orc. He was good friends with Bilbo and seems to have been kindlier than many Dwarves.

Bifur & Bofur^#:

Dwarves NOT of Durin's line, although descended from Dwarves of Khazad-dûm. Members of Thorin and Company. Settled in Erebor after Smaug's death.

Bombur^#:

Dwarf NOT of Durin's line, although descended from Dwarves of Khazad-dûm. Member of Thorin and Company and settled in Erebor after Smaug's death. Always fat, Bombur was so heavy in later life that it required six dwarves to lift him - he could not move by himself.

Dáin II Ironfoot^#:

Lord of the Dwarves of the Iron Hills. In 2941, he led an army to aid Thorin in the Battle of the Five Armies and as rightful heir, became King of Durin's Folk and King under the Mountain after Thorin's death. He ruled until the War of the Ring, when he was killed in the Battle of Dale while defending the body of his friend King Brand.

Dwalin, Dori, Nori^#:

Dwarves of the House of Durin, and members of Thorin and Company. Settled in Erebor after Smaug's death.

Fíli & Kíli^#:

Dwarves of Durin's Line, sons of Dís (only daughter of Thráin II) and nephews of Thorin II. They were slain while defending Thorin's body during the Battle of the Five Armies.

*Gimli^#:

Dwarf of Durin's line, son of Glóin. Gimli was chosen at the Council of Elrond to represent Dwarves in the Company of the Ring. He guided the Companions through Khazad-dûm and was the first dwarf to enter Lórien since Durin's Day. After the breaking of the fellowship, he traveled with Legolas and Aragorn. After the War of the Ring, Gimli brought a group of Dwarves from Erebor to Rohan and became Lord of the Glittering Caves. In Fourth Age 120, after the passing of Elessar (Lord Aragorn), Gimli sailed over the Sea with Legolas.

Glóin^#:

Dwarf of Durin's line, son of Gróin and father of Gimli. He was a member of Thorin and Company and settled in Erebor after Smaug's death. In 3018, Glóin and his son Gimli went to Rivendell to obtain advice from Elrond and took part in the Council of Elrond where the fate of the Ring was decided.

Óin^#:

Dwarf of the House of Durin, elder son of Gróin, and member of Thorin and Company. In 2989, Óin left Erebor and went to Khazad-dûm with Balin and in 2994, he was killed by the Watcher in the Water.

Ori^#:

Dwarf of the House of Durin, and member of Thorin and Company. In 2989, Ori left Erebor and went to Khazad-dûm with Balin, where he died in the last defense of the Dwarves in the Chamber of Mazarbul.

Thorin II^#:

After the death of his father, Thráin II, Thorin II became King of Durin's Folk in exile. In 2941, he met Gandalf, who persuaded him to launch an expedition to reclaim Erebor from Smaug. Soon after Smaug's death, Thorin was killed during the Battle of the Five Armies. He was known as Thorin Oakenshield because during the Battle of Azanulbizar in his youth, he used an oak-branch as a shield and club.

Thorin & Company^#:

Expedition organized by Thorin II in 2941 whose goal was to recover the hoard of Smaug in Erebor. The members of the expedition were Thorin, Balin, Dwalin, Fíli, Kíli, Dori, Nori, Ori, Óin, Glóin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, and their burglar, Bilbo Baggins. Gandalf also accompanied them for part of their journey. During the adventure, Smaug was destroyed and Erebor restored, but more importantly Gandalf acquired the Elven-sword Glamdring, Bilbo found (or stole, depending on who you ask) the One Ring while under the Misty Mountains, and the Battle of the Five Armies was fought.

Thráin II^#:

King of Durin's Folk in exile. He led the Dwarves in the War of the Dwarves and Orcs. In 2841, Thráin, restless with the greed for gold, resolved to go back to Erebor. His journey was troubled by evil things, and in 2845, he was captured by Sauron and imprisoned in Dol Guldur. He was tormented for five years, and his Ring of Power was taken from him, but before he died he gave the key of Erebor to Gandalf.

Thrór^#:

King of Durin's Folk. In 2770, he and his people were driven from Erebor by Smaug, and they wandered off to the south. In 2790, Thrór left his people and went wandering, and was slain and his body defiled by Azog of Moria, leading to the War of the Dwarves and Orcs.
